i have something similar but i used toilet flanges in place of your handmade drum. two of them back to back are essentially a drum. question: how do you keep the assembly from rising up on the headstay? i use a swivel attached to the original forestay mount on one side and the base of the, "drum" on the other.

@@riley-arr-g the pvc or the sail? the pvc was just glued, and i used the original hanks on the jib and genoa. drill holes spaced to the hanks in the pvc then use a dremel to cut out a semicircle in the pipe so the hank can go on the stay. when you spin the drum the pipe spins and furls the sail.

use a1" pvc Male adapter with locknuts for covers more secure. or 1 1/4 depending on pipe size

Hi, thanks for the comments. I need to update this video - I have made many improvements to this setup. Been busy racing other sailboats and now we are in winter shut down - bummer!

Looks like an easy system. Can you run the forestay through the pvc tube?

Hi, sorry I have been busy sailing all summer and did not see this. Yes, in this case I run the forestay through the tube.

There has to be some sort of tension or spring on the fuller doesn't there?

Hi, the jib sheets port or starboard pull against the furler line and vice versa. There are no tensioning systems. To unfurl you want to position the boat so that a little wind hits the jib - port or starboard. If the wind is up 6+ knots I unfurl the jib in the wind shadow of the main to keep things under control. While controlling the furler line so that the sail does not coming out too quickly, you also control the jib sheets to make it a smooth unfurling motion. The tension between the furling line and the jib sheets controls the speed of unfurling. Much easier to watch this happen then explain it. To furl I put the jib in the wind shadow of the main and again tension is controlled by pulling the furler line while controlling one or both jib sheets. I have a CDI store bought furler and it works the same way. No tensioning systems. If possible go out on a friends sailboat with a furler and it will be a great experience. There are also many great RUclips videos on how to furl and unfurler a jib.

Interesting…I think I’d have glued the drum spacer to the inside tube though.

You rather could utilise bamboo instead toxic pvc
