Basic Sailboat Racing Vocabulary Tutorial
I made this basic sailboat racing vocabulary tutorial for our sailing club. Many of us newbies, including myself, are confused by the racing terms and jargon. This video was created to make the racing experience fun and exciting by removing some of the confusion surrounding these common race training terms and jargon.

    i have something similar but i used toilet flanges in place of your handmade drum. two of them back to back are essentially a drum. question: how do you keep the assembly from rising up on the headstay? i use a swivel attached to the original forestay mount on one side and the base of the, "drum" on the other.

      @@riley-arr-g the pvc or the sail? the pvc was just glued, and i used the original hanks on the jib and genoa. drill holes spaced to the hanks in the pvc then use a dremel to cut out a semicircle in the pipe so the hank can go on the stay. when you spin the drum the pipe spins and furls the sail.

    Appreciate the video, but what I can't say I appreciate is knowing with absolute certainty that I'll have to live the rest of my life knowing that I'll never be as good at anything as you are at casually threading that rope thru seemingly small openings. I feel like I'd have more trouble throwing a golf ball thru a doorway an arm's length away. Okay, seriously, 1:53 has to be CGI - that's like 18 inches of a 3mm rope! Are you recording these at Hogwarts??

      @@taylorsailing1122 Sorry for confusion - was completely tongue-in-cheek. Just commenting that your supernatural ability to thread a significant length of thin rope through those small openings basically broke my brain. One of the most random but incredibly impressive things I've seen on YT. You might've missed your calling as a stage magician. Have to add - just watched the 1:53 mark again thinking maybe it wasn't as crazy as I remembered, and it was the opposite. I'm willing to bet there are more fingers in this video than humans in the world who could do that.

    Try running the mishear the other direction. Start at the ratchet block and reeve it up and down up and back down to tie it on the becket. That way you don’t have to pull all of the sheet through each black. The control lines on the vang are way too thick to run freely. Some 1/8” Spectra will make it work smoother. I always used a lever vang. We also quit using the “magic box” to tension the jib halyard. Replaced it with 8:1 tackle with 1/16” wire. But today we’d use Spectra. That mainsheet swivel base isn’t stiff enough to maintain a good uncleating angle under heavy loads. Harken’s replaced it in about ‘79 with a unit that has a race at the bottom with a bracing roller to get the needed stability.

      Most 470's have basic rigging that is the same and then everyone customized the optional stuff. Focus on the jib halyard, jib sheets, main halyard and main sheet. Also center board controls. They you can sail and get some feeling for the boat. Then you can start adding the "extras" like dual controls port and starboard for all of the options

    Do you preffer the 470 or the star over the other?

    • @taylorsailing1122
      @taylorsailing1122 Год назад

      That is a great question. On the lake we race (Acton lake, Hueston Woods State Park Ohio) the course is too short for the 470 and the winds are constantly shifting so little time to go out on the wire or launch the spinnaker. The club that has been sailing there setup the courses more for the Y-Flyers class and Handicap class (a lot of Sunfish and Capri 14.2). The Star, on the other hand, does not have a spinnaker and handles the smaller course and shifting winds much better. If I was on a large course I think the 470 would be much more fun - going out on the wire and using the spinnaker. Note that the 470 has a Portsmouth handicap rating of 86.3 and the Star has 83.1. The lower the better so the Star is actually easier to sail and faster than the 470. The downside is launching and retrieving the 470 is much easier since it has a swing centerboard and no ballast whereas the Star has a fixed and ballasted keel with a draft of 3.4'

      @Taylor Sailing thanks so much for the information. I was thinking about buying a star but I also saw a 470 for a great deal. I'm really interested in the star but the rigging seams very complicated.

    • @taylorsailing1122
      @taylorsailing1122 Год назад

      Hi, the rigging for the Star is not too bad once you understand the principles. After working on one the main difference between the Star and the 470 (besides the spinnaker and trapeze) is the controls for the rake the mast fore and aft for upwind (aft) and downwind (fore). Other then that the 470 actually has about the same complexity due to the trapeze and the spinnaker with spinnaker halyard and pole along with spinnaker sheets.

      Hi, I have bought and sold a few sailboats but the most recent find, a 1971 Star, had a ton of lines in lockers on the trailer. I wash the lines, line dry and then sort them out. Most of the time they are great for reuse and work fine. When buying new I like the feel of the Samson XL3S and the price is not too bad. What I have found is that for jib sheets and the mainsheet I want a good feel when racing but control lines and so forth I try to buy something that will wear well but is low priced. When you can find it on Amazon try the 6mm, 5mm and 4mm sailing line: great all around use for all of the controls.

      Hi, Spira Boats has a lot of RUclips videos on boat building. He passed away a few years ago but his stuff might still be online. in one of his plans I bought, the topic of bottom paint alternatives came up. He suggested any good oil base paint will be fine if the boat is not going to be sitting in the water for months at a time. So I bought Rust-oleum gloss white 1 gallon oil based and a Harbor Freight HLVP and spray the bottoms of my race boats (first I fix any gouges and worn spots and sand with 120 before painting). I thin the paint 2:1 or 3:1 until it sprays well. I spray outdoors in the morning if there is little wind. I scotch pad or light steel wool between coats (two coats is enough) and it holds up well. In the photo she is a bit dirty but comes clean quickly. I am a bit lazy when it comes to cosmetics but this girl's bottom was really beat up and needed the paint. The ugly orange is the original gelcoat color and I am not about to paint all of that!

    There has to be some sort of tension or spring on the fuller doesn't there?

    • @taylorsailing1122
      @taylorsailing1122 Год назад

      Hi, the jib sheets port or starboard pull against the furler line and vice versa. There are no tensioning systems. To unfurl you want to position the boat so that a little wind hits the jib - port or starboard. If the wind is up 6+ knots I unfurl the jib in the wind shadow of the main to keep things under control. While controlling the furler line so that the sail does not coming out too quickly, you also control the jib sheets to make it a smooth unfurling motion. The tension between the furling line and the jib sheets controls the speed of unfurling. Much easier to watch this happen then explain it. To furl I put the jib in the wind shadow of the main and again tension is controlled by pulling the furler line while controlling one or both jib sheets. I have a CDI store bought furler and it works the same way. No tensioning systems. If possible go out on a friends sailboat with a furler and it will be a great experience. There are also many great RUclips videos on how to furl and unfurler a jib.

      Hi, when I get back in my shop I will give you the details. My racing boats stay covered so the cloth only sees sun on race days. IMO hiking straps are 2 maybe 3 seasons and they replace. The Singer is not heavy enough for many marine projects but is a good work horse for the price. You really need to go up into one of the industrial machines for heavy work. I have a few tricks that I do to get the most of the Singer - new, sharp and heavy duty needles, hand starting to get the machine to move through heavy stacked up layers, and not using zig zag when stacking layers.

      Hi, now that the weather is getting better I will video my Star single handed mast raising method. Note: I already have a mast raising kit for my MacGregor 26S that I purchased in 2021. It is the main part of the system and I have used it on several boats. The main part of the kit is an aluminum pole about 5 feet long, a special forward/reverse hand crank and a normal 2 inch block at the top. I used 8mm line and it wraps around the winch. This pole system needs to mount at the base of the mast (I made brackets for the Star) and then you can winch to mast up or down. Also need adjustable side stays to keep the mast from swing too much to port or starboard during raising or lowering. The whole setup and raising is about 30 minutes.

      You can raise the mast with 2 people: ruclips.net/video/fk7g30IQpFg/видео.html That's how I step the mast on my Star. Much easier to step the mast than to lower the mast if I had to choose between the two as harder.

    This is very exciting. A more comprehensive overview of the project than you give in Part One A would be helpful. Maybe step back three paces and do a Part Zero video. What features will the computer support? Will the computer be able to talk to NMEA-2000 and/or NMEA-0183 devices? What are the sensor requirements? Why is the STM device + C code a better choice than a Raspberry Pi + Python? The IDE's auto-generated code is very cool. I can't wait to see the rest of the project! Thanks for doing this.

      Hi, thanks for reaching out. I am working on the next sections of this project. My day job is an embedded system architect/manager doing development using the STM32Fxxx series. That is our go to microcontroller. We do all of our industry equipment using these microcontrollers and use procedural C (the C that has been around since the dawn of time). We are moving to C++ in the near future. My previous lives were in consumer IoT products and my goal is a compact, battery powered low-cost system - that is why I am using an ARM processor like the popular STM32Fxxx. I typically use the Agile approach to requirements and start out with a rough idea and iterate towards a minimum viable product. This MVP will be a black box (water proof) that has a RTK GPS module and the STM32Fxxx storing the data on a microSD card. The goal is to race with this box mounted out of harms way and when the race is done upload the data to a company who takes that data and gives you your race information. The other goal is to place this box on the race floating devices so that we know where they are and when they are moved. Often on lake racing they are moved several times during the race day. This data is also needed to "mark" the race course. Note this is only MVP - I have a day job and lofty goals for this project but time is not on my side. FUTURE: using the STM32Fxxx microcontroller, we can setup to accept and communicate on the protocols that you mentioned - as long as the technical specifications are available.

      @@taylorsailing1122 Thanks for the quick reply. I'm a retired software developer - in my working life I did a little with the RPi. I have an uninstrumented J/35 that I've raced one season so far. We were flying blind in our races. We got killed by boats that were better instrumented and could accurately measure things like TWS, TWD, Boat Speed and VMG. I'm about to add wind and speed sensors to the boat and will install a racing computer as well. I'll look for something like a used B&G H2000 - they and associated sensors and displays can be had fairly cheap since they are so ancient. Eventually I'd like to replace this very old and unsupported hardware with a DIY system that I can understand down to the bits and pins level. Looking forward to more great videos from you. Thanks again.

      @@j35.scooter Hi, there are several RUclips tutorials for what you may be looking for using Raspberry Pi for Sailboat navigation systems. I race a 470 and will race a Star that I am restoring.

      @@taylorsailing1122 I don't know how much computer support you need to race a 470 - seems like you'd be too busy sailing the thing to pay much attention to gauges and stuff. I race my funky old J/35 against fully race-ready J/109s and J/111s, sometimes also a Farr 40 but that's just hopeless. We should be able to beat the 109s over the finish line. So far that hasn't happened. Good luck with the Star. That's a sweet boat.

      Hi, thanks - my kids are giving me tips to move out of the corny stuff to making them look a bit better. She is a 1985 Star class sailboat. A two hander for racing. Up until 2012 she was the olympic boat of choice for keel boat racing. This FB group is very helpful. facebook.com/groups/1332301487119325

    I owned that same boat back in the late 70's. had blue stripes where skipper sat. Boat ended up in Italy.

      I really enjoy sailing her. At our small racing association one of the best sailors told me that my 470 is probably the fastest boat in our handicap class.

    Another thing you could try is tying a monkey fist to a line, toss it over the spreader (controlling the standing end of the line), tie end of line to end of backstay after detaching the monkey fist, and then pull the backstag over the spreader onto the correct side. Always potential that it will get caught, but another way to do this.
