Yes, it works with unprotected perfectly.

You're obviously capable with soldering, why not solder the spring to the clip that connects to the tail cap?

I didn't think about that! I might try in the future, but I'm not very confident about the result because the spring needs to withstand some deformation each time you change the battery, I think the soldering can easily deattach.
