In this one i’m out shearing ewe lambs with James and Murray.
Shearing Ewe lambs that will be kept and tupped this winter.
You have seen all these things before but i try to keep it interesting and fun.

About Me
I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep.
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could keep my hand in. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 ewes.
I can now shear over 10,000 sheep a season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on RUclips and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

What I love about your vlogs is that they're as much about the people as they are about the sheep.
Think James Nisbet must have been on the night shift too. Looks like he was at a Saturday night dance with that sark before turning up to pack wool!! He's got right bonny lambs too.

Massively advantageous to clip lambs, it gives them a tremendous boost,we clipped ours straight after weaning just before their click extra cover ran out so no need to retreat again,👍 used a Heiniger Bad 9 tooth comb to leave a bit on , good choice had heavy rain since and they took no fault and you can see the change in them right away but they go trough grass like locusts, not to mention not having to put massive gloves on to try and release them from the dreaded brambles, that’s when you approach as quietly as possible to try and stop them going mental but that never works, so then you grab a back leg which goes off like a machine gun forcing you to let go before your eyeballs shatter, by this time the bramble twist is as thick as a tree trunk and you need to go and get the chain saw but then you have no petrol , this is the point when i found it tempting just to quite happily go back with the gun that is why they should be kept safely locked away in a gun cabinet upstairs in the house because the thought of taking your boots off is the only thing that stops me doing it, when you do eventually get them free and release them back into the wild why is it they then scream straight to the nearest ditch and launch themselves in it trying to die in a more spectacular fashion 😤😤😤😤. So the moral of this story is definitely clip lambs definitely no question, i know someone in comments already mentioned brambles and ditches that is sound advice.🇬🇧👍 by the way if you don’t take your gun back with you there’s bound to be a dog chasing the ones that aren’t already stuck into brambles and ditches , it’s called the sheep game 😂😂

@Sicklecroftdave if you ever want to quit sheep farming you can easily do standup comedy. I'm laughing so hard! We keep our guns safely locked away in a gun cabinet in a dead-bolted spare closet. Inside the gun safe the guns have barrel locks as well as trigger locks. That way, you have to think long before you make a decision to use one. There are tools available for cutting small trees that can fit inside a standard tool box, but that wouldn't be nearly as funny.
@@jillcrowe2626 well thank you for that complimentary advice, not quite sure about the stand up comedian suggestion though, I feel a sit down comedian would be more appropriate considering the severity of my PTSD ( post traumatic sheep disorder) which i think should be recognised alongside the military form of this debilitating disorder , although the shepherding form symptoms are more severe , many shepherds can be found in the sitting position with their head in their hands sobbing for breath , more than likely on that dead full wooled wet extremely heavy triplet carrying ewe that decided to drowned itself in a steep sided ditch , one of those ditches that mysteriously lacks a phone signal preventing any hope of any type of assistance of any kind from anything or anybody . Over and out under and in 👍

Shearing lambs actually benefits them great Cammy, well that's my experience anyway! Any weaned lambs that I would have on the farm come September (forsure) I would shear off. Then certainly finish quicker & that's my plan anyway, it works. The factory where I kill them aren't as impressed yet he still takes them!

Shearing can definitely be an athletic endeavor sometimes. My back usually is stiff the next day from all the bending.
Shearing does create its own type of fitness and we all suffer a little at the beginning of the season but doesn't take long for the body to get fit to it again!
I love the Scottish accent but please slow down so us Canadians can understand half of what your saying

Great horse, and you knew there would be those of us wanting to know how many hands he is. Good horse owner! Takes care of her horse after he is done competing AND has treats in her pocket. I got a folding jockey wheel on my trailer and sometimes it is a hassle if you park on soft ground but i like it because it saves my back

Been shearing replacement lambs for past 5yrs ( late August). Definitely find they eat more through Sept / Oct and put on nice bit of condition. Secondary bonus for hill farms is they don't have a big fleece to get stuck in briers, ditches etc. Makes a super hogget out of em the following year
Yeah that’s another good point i missed out! Seen my hoggs getting stuck in the briers etc.
Yah know, speaking as a licensed electrician, most folks would unplug that cord before repairing it. Just sayin' man.

In NZ it’s been proved that blade shearing over the life of a sheep, it produces an extra fleece, simply because they don’t get a check, after shearing, and I always believed lambs grew better if shorn

Have heard, from a man who knows, that small lambs if sheared and kept inside, will come on better than if left with their fleece on.

It’s mostly English but where i’m from in Scotland still uses a lot of the Scots language. I’m trying hard to speak plain english but people have told me that they start to understand better after a few videos 😆

With those boys running the sheep you're not going to need the dogs. I loved seeing them in the video. How old are they, and are they going to school or taking school online? Also, I didn't catch the name of the puppy.
They are 9 I believe. They do go to school just now. Not sure how covid effects the classes. Great fun for the kids.
Great video as always, i enjoyed the hillbilly ingenuity at the beginning to get the trailer hitched up. Never have seen a tub used to prop up a trailer hitch. Was that blue merle pup a collie? Dont often see collie blue merles here.

It was faster to just lift it on and off Mick but it was in a bad position on the grass at home and i’m too weak😂

Hi George. I can’t really comment on that as i’ve only really used the Rappa system. I believe it’s pretty much a direct copy of Pratley these days.

Hey mate, whats name of the battery handpiece you use. Is it good and last a bit. Does it use normal comb and cutter. Just bought a harrington crutching trailer and think it be handier than dragging power about.

Hi mate. It’s the Razor handpiece. There is a link to it in description of most of my videos. It comes with two batteries and will last maybe 45 mins a battery when new. It takes a normal comb and cutter but u can’t set them very well. My best advice would be get the Heiniger 12v handpiece. Higher blade speed and near invincible. Just attaches to a leisure battery and lasts all day👍

Norway is pretty hard work. Never been to Iceland but i’m going to try and get up for their big hill gather next year! Looks unreal!

I'm too lazy to shear the bastards just take the belly n a swipe at the leg if I feel like it 😅 some lads are dead set against letting the ram to lambs around here but I find they settle a lot better myself
Aye it all depends the size. I’m not keen on it as lambing hoggs is a lot of work. Might give the tup a week with the 50 biggest ones this year and see what he gets.
Aye bitta extra work n feed I suppose, I lamb early so lambs are strong. The auld lad would never do it, he just doesnt want the hassle and lambs blackie so they wouldnt be strong enough. I have a small lleyn ram to let with the ewe lambs, prob let him out n 2,3weeks..the main flock will be finished. The lambs are small never much bother, not worth much but takes the hassle out of it for again, can have the same probs with first time lambers whatever the age imo. Ya should give a go with a small lock and see how they go 👍if you look over the lifetime of the ewe shes still producing more for ya

I don’t own any land Ricky and running around 1100 head of stock just now. I’ll have 6-700 going to rams.
I’m a cattle foot trimmer here in Northern Ireland run around 160 ewes and milk 100 Holstein cows I thought I was busy how do u have time for another job plus cliping love the videos
