- In this video you show you step by step instructions on how to update you new Kenwood. You will need a Windows computer for this update. This is for all the new Kenwood Excelon radios with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
I attempted the update for the DDX9903S but when I plugged in the USB nothing happened. I didn't sweat it as I haven't had many issues. I now see that you mentioned that the USB drive is to be plugged into the ipod side of the two USB inputs. I didn't do this last time. I will try again now that I'm armed with the proper information. Is there a way to update it without a computer? I only have an iPhone and an iPad. Sometimes CarPlay works but most of the time it won’t. It gives me the warning page where I check the box and hit enter but all I get is a black screen. Touching the screen does nothing. I have troubleshot every fix I can find, download so many apps…plus a very loud static sound is coming out. Sometimes I can’t even get it to turn off even when I turn the car off. The reset button doesn’t do anything. It’s just a red down arrow light but you can’t push it. Bluetooth is working but has a loud static sound. Then randomly, CarPlay works and the static stops. But then it won’t work again. I just bought the car with this already installed. I have tried two different cables. One came with my older iPhone because new one isn’t usb. Sometimes one works and the other doesn’t. Then it won’t work and the other one does. ???
I have a Kenwood DNX639S. I updated the firmware & now want to up date the maps. The instructions to "touch>settings>device (SD card)>update map & the car will automatically imprint a unique ID code on the micoSD card. Then you're supposed to insert the micro SD card into the computer & launch Garmin Express to download the maps onto the SD card. Then insert the SC card back into the car, uplaod & keep the micro SD card installed bc it reads the new maps off of it. I could not find the link for >update map. Can you show a video updating the new Garmin maps on the Kenwood? Thank you.
Firmware update has made notable improvements on my DDX9903S. Some other issues still need attention.
Prior to the update I had minor USB problems. If I had a USB stick plugged in that was being used to watch video the head unit would lose its place if powered down and turned back on for any duration of time forcing the video to have to be started over again. I no longer have this issue.
2 other gripes I currently have which I hope are corrected soon = The first is one I've heard mentioned by others. There is no time counter when playing tracks. This has been a staple of music equipment for eons. Can't see how this got left out of the initial software configuration. The 2nd issue has me thrown for a loop at the moment. It has to do with ipod playback. I have been using an iPhone 4 as my ipod. They're in abundance, dirt cheap and essentially function just as well as a standalone ipod. However, I still decided that I'd rather have just a simple ipod that's only for my music. No apps, imessages, or alerts that a WiFi network has been located, or wirelessly syncing my daughters recent music purchases into my library. Just a device that was intended for music playback that also needed a connection with a computer in order to sync music. So I bought a completely refurbished ipod 5.5 generation. I got the ipod, fired up my computer, plugged it in, updated to the latest version of software (it already was) synced my music and out to the car I go for a listening test. Fire up the DDX9903S, switch to ipod, plug my new old ipod in and nothing. It detects that an ipod has been connected but nothing plays. I push the play button on the kenwood touch screen and the music begins but the trouble is only beginning. I touch the search button and the standard menu list pops up on the display. Artists, songs, albums, Playlist etc. I touch artists. The kenwood responds with a screen prompt that says "no contents". I try songs, albums, genre and so on but get the same screen prompt every time. I then try playlists and the screen displays the name of my ipod. Hmmmm. I touch that and suddenly all my songs appear. I touch one and it begins to play. I then try another search and select artists yet again. "no contents ". I try selecting the next track but the Kenwood is unresponsive and nothing happens. I then touch pause. The track pauses. I push play. The track resumes. I push next track. Nothing. I push previous track in hopes the track will start over. Nope. Play/pause. Yup. Works fine. I then plug my iPhone 4 back in and try it. Works perfectly without issue. And back to ipod again. Nope. Try another cable. No change. Back to iPhone 4. Works great. It appears at least at this point that older generation ipods have at least some level of incompatibility issues with this head unit. It simply feels like the unit is confused by the older ipod file structure or something related. I feel equally strong about the ipod not being at fault here as I don't have any issues wherever else it's used. I'm willing to bet that the Ole Kenwood engineers were too busy playing with android auto and Apple Carplay and forgot about few things on the first pass. This should however be addressable through an update and regardless is still the best head unit I've owned to date. Would love to hear if anyone has input on the ipod situation. It's not a ipod touch by the way. it's an old click wheel full size. 5th gen or 5.5 enhanced as some people call it.
There is a second update coming, but no idea when or what it fixes. They just told us soon.

Did you unzip the file? Or just download and put on flash drive?? Trying to do it for a 73s... I did it once for a DNN770HD and had troubles afterward... Radio quit turning on about 3 days later. Thanks for any help..
My DNX893S is stuck on the “Updating SoC Image.” step in the process. It continues until I get a message, “Could not read the updated data.” This is for System Firmware Update (24.08.2018). Any advice how to move forward?

I just got the Kenwood DDX6903s and I have the update on a usb drive. And I cant get that screen to pop up at all. I have tried it with it plugged while the radio boots up and just while its on. Im plugging it into the USB plug coming off the radio and not the iopd/iphone plug. What am i Missing? Help?
problem with gps nav, when i am driving i am listening the music and when the gps want to said something put the volume like low but do not hear the gps voice and the gps volume is set up at 35 to 40 .. how to fits that , i check the update but the system 893s said that have the update that is in the kenwood page File "S_V2_6_0008_0400.zip" download

Hi i have dnn990hd i try update but I update with diferent Model like dnn991hd, then I do that and the screen turn Black and tras it , only turn on the red triangle

I have a ddx 371. I'm having problems updating it.. There are 3 three updates for it. Do I update each file separately? Also do I drop the file folder in the thumb drive or just contents?

Have you noticed a noise from the speakers when the ddx9903s is on the home page ? If you take it off the home page and go to another page like the ipod page the noise goes away and when you go back to the home page the noise is there again .You can hear this noise when the sound is turned all the way down . Will you listen for this noise the next time you install one . Its not a humming noise its more of a static noise .

I have loud static too, except on the rare occasion, when I can get CarPlay to work. It’s very loud and the volume buttons don’t change it.
i try to doit on my kenwood ddx 271 and dont work it just says now checkin for hours and nothing can u show me on a ddx271 firmwere

I just completed firmware update #2. My app layout has been rearranged and both Pandora and Spotify are now in primary spots on my home screen. My older generation ipod issue remains. Still no time counter.

KILLR16 are you using a widows computer? Does the Kenwood USB say IPod on it? Have you ever used the USB cable to charge anything other then your phone? Does CP or AA still work?

Whoever got stuck on "Updating SoC image" message. You need an older USB 2.0 flash drive. It won't finish the update, if it's located on a modern usb 3.0 flash drive. Just get a cheap black usb port thumbstick, format it to fat32 and you are good to go.

Can anyone help I used the wrong update for my until and after the install until no longer turns on. I tried hard reset nothing work. Is my unit rip. My unit is the Ddx372bt but the update I installed was for the Ddx373bt please help anyway I can reset or something

Five Star Car Stereo I read a forum that says if you unplug the wire harness 10 sec and plug back in it'll boot up to allow you to update the correct software. I guess I'll give that a try as my last option before getting another unit. I'll keep you updated if it works. #fingerscrossed

Why did you format the thumb drive to fat32 if the units all have linex dual core processors with NTSF format ?
