Just forgot to mention; but I played TotK before BotW, and I think that helped me appreciate it more because I didn’t experience that same Hyrule in the previous game so it all felt new and fresh. Just thought I’d mention that :)
Edit: it’s been over a week since uploading this, and I can see that some people may have not realised why I made this video

I played BotW first, but by the time TotK came out, I haven't played BotW for 4 years... So it also felt "new and fresh" for me... But at the same time also familiar... Like coming home after a long, long journey 💙

The reason why people hated totk so much is bc it didn't have the same magic as botw, playing totk first truly let you realize how good it was

Having played BotW multiple times and in fact done a playthrough right before starting TotK, I think there are areas where it hurts the game such as a lot of the side content, and other areas where it heavily benefits it such as Hyrule Castle and the 4 Regional quest towns.

    • @commenter5901

I played BOTW multiple times and another time right before TOTK came out so that I could memorize every bit of the landscape and see all the differences. One thing I was really interested in in BOTW was the story behind the 8th heroine and I was so happy that there was a pretty lengthy quest line about that. But there were a few places in BOTW where there were small caves but the caves weren't there in TOTK. I guess some caves caved in while others opened up.
All in all, I found the changes between games to be really fascinating and even though I knew the map like the back of my hand in BOTW, I can get lost in TOTK because it really is so different. I don't think people really appreciate all the differences if they don't know BOTW as well.

I'm not sure why is everyone giving so much hate to this game. I am a Zelda fan since OoT (which released when I was 9 yo), and even though I do love the old format, after experiencing all this freedom I would be disappointed to go back to the more limited formula of item collection.

TotK really has a personal soft spot to me. Its not only the one that git me into the Zelda franchise (ao far played BotW, OoT, MM, and now playing ALTTP, love them all) but it also revived my love for gaming after having never touched a console game for years. It does have flaws (like the sages or the 4 end of Dungeon curscenes) but these 250 hours were precious
That title scene still gives me chills

If its trending its because a ton of people are resonating with the criticism they are hearing of the game. I have heard so many people shared my exact experience with the game lately, its nice to know im not a freak. Stop assuming all criticism is “just hate”, you will never see other perspectives if this is how you see the world

mostly my issue with the negativity is it's in bad faith. you could be equally as cruel to a game like ocarina of time, but nobody is because that game has been canonized as nearly perfect. when the scales tipped on totk, and it was generally okay to bash it, people went overboard. it's good for clicks.

I love this game like crazy. There were so many amazing moments. The health bar moment, diving to catch Zelda, descending into the depths for the first time, piecing together cool contraptions, being told to find Zelda and you realise she was right there at the very start, seeing the neat ways the different areas had changed and I could go on. The final trailer for the game was so freaking good. I was so sad when I found out there wouldn't be DLC because I want to go back and play it again so bad in a master mode.

very happy if you enjoyed the game but sadly BoTW was a 9/10 game for me and ToTK is 6-7/10 for me and I spent 150+ hours in both. BoTW - brand new game with SO many new ideas, gameplay and doesn't overstays its welcome that much. ToTK - a game with some amazing parts but incredibly recycled and copypasted-BoTW in many others and - unless you played BoTW before - very much bloated and repetitive (and a perfect example of 'less would be more')

1:14 - What we need to consider is that people who say TotK is bad are a part of what is called "vocal minority". But their opinion isn't really the universal one. There are very few games which achived such a huge succes, especially after enormous expectations. And 96/100 review average, 21 milion copies sold in a year and countless awards say that it really resonated with most people, so it is still objectively a masterpiece

No one has measured what the minority/majority of an opinion is, if the only stat we can pull is an aggregated score. It's definitely well rated, but that doesn't mean that the recurring criticism isn't valid, liking a game isn't binary. Now if you're only talking about people who say it's trash, I get you. Beyond that, people (like me) probably had a great time but many things they wish were done differently.

Tears of the Kingdom has my favorite version of the Temple of Time theme. The way the Saxophone and the Trumpet play a call and response piece really gives vibes of “The Final Trial” from BotW (with the Bagpipes soloing the whole time), and “Final Hours” from MM (The way the Sax and Trumpet feel as it they’re reaching out to each other). The game’s soundtrack overall has some of the most peak in the entire series. While yes, I’ll never forget Mr. Kondo-San’s compositions, I must say that a lot of the music in this game has reached his level of work. (No, I’m not here to suck off Colgera, and the 3rd Trailer BGM. But “Zelda’s Wish”, “Critical Decisions”, “Hyrule Castle (Surface)”, and “Construct Factory (Stage 3)” are all some of the most beautiful themes ever crafted for a video game. I applaud the Zelda Team.

Yep I noticed that when I was joking around that Link should be 122 years old because if he and Zelda are the same age before the calamity in botw Zelda was 17 which would make Link also 17, and after the calamity Link and Zelda should be 117. Totk takes place 5 years later which would make Link and Zelda 122 years old, but Zelda went back 10, 000 years in the past and she lived as an immortal dragon until present day making her 10,122 years old making their age age 10,000 years. Talk about a monstrous age gap, Zelda is the ultimate cougar, she's cougar prime just waiting to pounce on the much younger 122 year old.
It was then that I realized that she should've been a dragon for the entirety of botw meaning that game could've have happened but tears is set right after breath making a time a paradox. The only explanation I could come up with is that there 2 Zeldas and dragon Zelda was just conveniently unnoticeable until tears.

While TotK's story isn't delivered as well at it could have been, I still loved it-especially Zelda's characterization. I will say that TotK 's finale blows BotW's finale out of the water. I was disappointed with Dark Beast Ganon and thought I should have got to climb him Shadow of Colossus style, so the Dragon ending of TotK was absolutely incredible.

I did go there first, but I did the tears out of order because I was rushing (one switch and 3 family members all taking turns playing the game while trying to avoid spoilers). I wanted to find out the main story before I was spoiled on it, so I just went to all the tears as fast as I could and pieced together what happened by the 3rd tear I found.

Any time I see someone address "the discourse around the game", it's only focused on one side as if that was everything. "Haters" call out "shills" and vice versa, both call the other a vocal minority. From where I stand people have been criticizing the game since release, since then more have played the game and it's the same opinions showing up again and again. The majority is able to see flaws and still enjoy the game's strengths.
I don't think a review can be fair if it doesn't account for pros and cons at the same time. BOTW was amazing and had flaws, or at least was focused on certain things more than others. TOTK is great too, more ambitious, but the way it doubles down on BOTW sometimes underlines limitations. And all of that, as usual, will affect each player differently based on their experience.
If we don't acknowledge both sides at once, it's just a game of ping pong to "correct" the others as if there was a single True Experience.

I can't explain it but the feelings of awe and emotion that people seem to have for the intro of Breath of the Wild when you step out of the Shrine of Resurrection, I just don't have that. But I did feel something similar when I jumped off the sky island and the theme swelled and the title dropped.

Now the people who grew up with black and white speak about how good those games were. The same thing will happen here. In a decade(s) people will talk about TOTK in a glowing light.
Ive played most big releases the last few years (rdr2, botw, Odyssey, Elden ring, BG 3 , Persona 5,every resident evil remake) and TOTK is the best game ive played. • @lasercraft32

I still can't believe people actually dislike this game... Genuinely... "wah its the same map, wah where's my classic dungeons? wah the story broke the pre-established canon even though Zelda games have never cared about canon in its entire existence!"
Like come on man... The game makes Botw feel an incomplete game in comparison! The abilities alone are INSANE from a game development standpoint, and the changes were enough to make me explore the entire map again despite already doing so in Botw! (I guarantee you, if a modder went and rearranged everything on the map to even close to this level, people would praise them to high heavens and treat it as impressive).
Yes, I get 6 years is a long time... Yes, the game isn't perfect... But people are acting like its some personal insult that killed their love of the series or something, just because it didn't make a brand new map and didn't have a mind blowing story (even though I personally thought the story was leagues better than Botw's).
People just have way too high of expectations. They shouldn't have to make a "new Botw" that revolutionizes the gaming industry _every single time._ The amount of polish and graphical upgrades from Botw to Totk is insane (I'm willing to bet most people didn't realize that the entire skybox and movement of the sun and moon are entirely different between games).
My only real complaint is that they didn't have DLC. Master Mode in Totk would have been GREAT, and extremely easy to implement, and having DLC would be the perfect way to fill out the Depths and Sky Islands a little more. Its honestly a shame that the devs consider this version of Hyrule to be complete, because there's so much potential they could still improve upon (ironically).

Fun fact, some people are different then you, we think differently, we enjoy different things, we dislike different things, and thats ok! I personally had such a crappy experience with totk that i stopped playing after 50 hours because I had literally almost 0 fun that entire time.
Nerrel has a video on totk that sums up pretty well why we didnt like the game, if you are curious where we are coming from, give it a watch! Its about as long as this video.
Just please, stop looking down on those that didnt enjoy the game, we werent looking for reasons to not like it, most of us are envy of those that did like it and tried the best to find ways to enjoy it. But its not for everyone.

There's a reason you got push back outside of your echo chamber of Nerrel, when people say it's the vocal minority who don't like this game? Name one way Im in an echo chamber? You make SO many assumptions about me in your replies, I only even brought up nerrels video because its a short and concise review as to not waste peoples time with repetitive details.
IF YOU READ MY COMMENT, you would notice I never once said the game was bad. But its not a masterpiece for everyone, but so many zelda fanboys like you just assume something is “wrong with us, or we played the game wrong, or we found it too difficult” if we didnt like it. Maybe we just didnt like it, and want to talk about that because some might resonate with those feelings.
I also never said most people dont like the game lol, not sure where you got that. But every single time I talk negatively about the game, even 2 years after release, I get shut down with the most braindead fanboy comments

Story telling like it isn't the best of zelda, sure, but even though it is much better then the most games ive played in resent time, especially if you can look at it more as a stand alone (exept botw maybe). The game mechanics chefs kiss. It is, as i heard, already study material in game related programming classes.

The problem with Tears of the Kingdom story is that it has the same memory formula as Breath of the Wild. It’s a linear story that’s told in a non linear fashion and the vast majority of players will go through the game collecting the tears out of order. This worked better for Breath of the Wild because Link just woke up after 100 years and lost all his memories and you basically go around the post apocalyptic land trying to rediscover yourself and what happened to the champions. I witnessed Sonia die in one cutscene and then she was back alive in another because the memories were out of order. The sages aren’t really all that fleshed out because every cutscene after each dungeon has the sages say the same exact thing line for line word for word as all the other cutscenes in the game. It’s tedious and annoying from a story perspective. They also made it completely obvious from the start that Zelda was a puppet. Lastly, you can pull the master sword and discover that Zelda is the light dragon before doing any of the dungeons which means you will have to sit there and watch the sages see puppet zelda and you’ll know it’s an imposter but can’t do anything about it. The ancestors of the sages also witness zelda turning into a dragon and yet none of them inform Link about it at all. I just think the story is all over the place and doesn’t make that much sense. Breath of the Wild had a simple story but at least it made sense and had interesting characters. I didn’t really care about the new characters like Sonia and Mineru. I also think the Sheikah Tech from Breath of the Wild is more interesting especially from a lore perspective than the Zonai are in Tears of the Kingdom.
I will admit that Zelda turning herself into a dragon was the ultimate sacrifice in the series besides maybe The King flooding himself and Hyrule in Wind Waker in hopes for a better future. It would have been better and more impactful if Zelda stayed a dragon but instead she wakes up and doesn’t remember anything. Almost like taking a nap for thousands of years and never had to suffer because of it. The cutscene where Rauru tells Ganondorf about the hero with the sword that seals the darkness was one of the greatest cutscenes ever. And the final fight in the sky with the two dragons has some of the most beautiful music in the entire series. I can hate on the game but also recognize when it does get it right. Overall, I thought the story could have been told so much better and at the end of the day it leads us with more questions than actual answers.

I’m so happy to see the fan base turn a little back toward appreciating TOTK. Yeah, it might feel like a super sized glorified maxed out DLC, but it’s also magical beyond compare in its toolbox. And, the layered discovery of the caves that weren’t even promoted like the sky islands, let alone AN extra player the Depths! I legit screamed like a child when I first:
    1. Could land on a dragon!
    2. Ride a dragon DOWN in a malice hole…. Forever…
    3. Into this MASSIVE world that was a direct mirror or the overworld…
Yeah, story is repetitive, temples were better but still repetitive, Depths got repetitive too, BUT the ability and freedom to self-innovate on a level I’ve never had in a game still wins one of the best games I’ve ever played.

BOTW is a game that is so simple and beautiful to me, it really is you against nature. It kinda makes me want to cry of how beautiful and elegant it is. Meanwhile TOTK is this gigantic epic adventure, where now you have the abilities of a god and can experiment with everything. It is just too hype and fun to play to this day. When TotK let you ride them, if kicked BotW right off the throne. Yes, its one feature, that made it better then BotW for me, but hey, anyone has a feature they wished existed in BotW. This doesn't mean I hate BotW, no. The divine beasts are actually my favourites as well and despite everyone saying, they suck at a temple, I enjoyed playing them and in AoC we finally could play with them! I feel like too many people are putting a game’s story as the forefront for why a game should be played. Do I think good stories can make a good video game? No, actually. I’d rather read a book of the story than have to work through a tedious means of telling it (not talking of totk here btw). I think a good story only enhances a game. It doesn’t necessarily have to be what makes a game good. Totk’s lore may be a bit more inconsistent than botw, but generally I had a lot more fun with the creative approaches I could find in totk instead of the more simplistic puzzles and trials that make up botw sometimes. Botw sometimes ends up boring after you find the best weapons to use because you generally don’t have much reason for using anything else. While their are powerful weapons in totk, it doesn’t exactly feel like it’s rewarding you differently for using those weapons instead of other ways, maybe even the opposite sometimes. I still do love botw for it’s more simplistic gameplay compared to totk, but in general I enjoy totk more than botw.

That said, 23:45 is my main reason for disliking the game. With Age of Calamity I was advised the game was a prequel. It wasn't. I was then advised TOTK was a sequel. It wasn't. Both feel like alternate realities. Which is fine. But as someone who adored BOTW and has spent over 1,000 in the game enjoying every minute, I have been lied to twice. What I loved about BOTW was changed and tweaked into a game that I was so excited for I couldn't wait and played it at 2 in the morning on launch day. I won't go into everything, but my favorite character (Kass) was gone, and I found the new mechanics overwhelming and the new sage abilities tedious.
I am so happy that people like this game, or love it. I watched this since I'd watched tons of videos about people disliking the game, and wanted to see what you had to say. BOTW will always be a special game to me, but if I ever feel the itch to ride a hover bike, I'll come here.

People switched up hard on this game because at launch people were gushing over the game and saying things like "totk made botw feel like a tech demo", or they were gushing how the new ability were leagues better than the old sheikah slate abilities like how ultra hand is a direct upgrade to magnesis, or even developers gushing over that one animations in the depths where a wheel rolled up a chain and how fluid it was, explaining how hard that animation is animation like it tend to get hidden so the player doesn't noticed it but Nintendo were showing off their expertise in game making. I don't even need to mention all the different builds people made with ultra hand, building entire mech suits and attack helicopters and of course Korok torture devices.
Nowadays any tears content on my feed is almost all negative and the positive ones are dated to around when the game came out, videos like why people now hate tears, or a million why totk isn't as good botw because it's doesn't have the same magic or charm or whatever. It is Omnipotent Power that can grant any wish regardless if the one with the wish is good or evil, if Rauru really did have the Triforce then Ganondorf wouldnt be in charge to begin with since the Secret Stones only *Double* the Powers within and it is mathematically and by Definition Impossible to surpass infinity, so it makes zero sense for Ganondorf with Double Power to surpass infinite power

Let me let you know.... you like totk a lot more. It is so much better than Botw. This is being said by someone whose favorite game ever was Chrono Trigger until BOTW came out. The reason people have this struggle is because when BOTW came out it was completely a new experience and even if you watched everything you could about it, you still knew basically nothing about it. Going into TOTK we knew what to expect and then every step of the way it was better than expectations. BOTW will always hold a place in my heart and mind for that amazing experience of something so new and amazing but TOTK is by all measures a better game.

I agree on the Story, I do like TotK's story more than Botws, in Botw we get everything spoiled from the very beginning, and the Memories we collect on the way are mostly 50% of Zelda having her Moodswings due to the psychological pressure she and her father puts on herself
In Tears of the Kingdom we only know vaguely what happened, yet we get the Details told through Memories and Story Progression, The Story was way more connected with the one leading into the other, yet using the same Type of Storytelling however goes with the risk of spoiling everything else, thus I can understand why they dislike it.

The only way I can describe this game is epic.
    Is it perfect? No.
Could it have more and be even better? Yes
Is it still complex enough to have three separate playthroughs that all ended up vastly different just from slightly adjusting how I played the game? Yes
And is it free enough to still be discovering new and random things and have some of the funniest and coolest moments happen on each of those playthroughs? Absolutely.
TotK is probably the closest thing to a perfect game there is in my opinion. But since perfection isn't possible, and is different depending on the eye of the beholder, there will always be flaws. But those flaws don't detract from the full experience you get 200+ hours later in one playthrough, making useless machines, filling out completion percentage, and crying and screaming and cheering as quietly as possible while you freak out internally because you just beat the game but your parents are trying to sleep in the room across from you.
And even though I played BotW before Totk, it didn't detract the experience, and even made me go back for a master mode playthrough of BotW I had been saying I would do but didn't for a year.

When looking at a game I love like this one, or one that I really don’t like (recent AC games), I try to consider the opposite side’s viewpoint so that I’m not completely biased one way or the other, recognizing that there are good and bad things done in every game. And while Totk made some missteps here and there, it is overall an extremely well made game and when it’s high points hit, they hit hard. Some Zelda fans even now are willing to accept some of the few things Skyward Sword did well, even though its problems are still very apparent even a decade later. I think the recent Totk hate is due to how when it first came out any who voiced criticisms were shouted down by those who loved it, and now the pendulum is swinging the other way. I hope eventually everything balances out and we can eventually have a balanced, nuanced discussion about this game and what it does well and what it doesn’t. So thanks for giving your opinion and trying to help stabilize the Zelda fans

I've got the impression that many (or most) people that love totk just automatically dismiss any criticism as "hating" just like how botw fans did a few years ago. Personally I enjoyed totk (I have around 400 hours on it) and adored botw even more, but I can't help but feel that it (totk) has a lot of missed opportunities, and trust me I tried REALLY hard to love this game. So it pains me when I and many others try criticizing it and we just kinda get generalized as being "angry haters that hate for the sake of hating" or whatever. It sounds silly and a bit hypocritical hearing some totk fans argue that we shouldn't treat them like dumbasses who like a dumb game (which is fair), while they do pretty much the same with "haters" who are only (usually) normal people expressing their own opinions that just happen to also be negative. I would much rather have a place where we could all say stuff freely without getting jumped by childish internet users. Because trust me, people on both sides of this argument are at fault here. It doesn't help that you're also barely interacting with negative feedback in the comment section (even if expressed in a civilized and respectful way) while hearting comments looking down on people who dislike totk? I don't even dislike it, so it's not like I'm getting defensive because of that, I merely find it to be pretty intellectually dishonest

@@naturalLog26 My intention was never to hurt anyone’s feelings. I respect everyone’s opinions and I enjoy hearing what others have to say about the game, positive or not. I recognise my mistake and I never meant to be offensive or look down on anyone. I just grew tired of reading so much hate during the year that I’ve kinda turned a blind eye to it. I apologise
Edit: I actually finished writing a script earlier today, and a part of it features a little segment about how both haters and lovers should see each others point of views equally and not dispute about it or look down on each other because it’s pointless.
Man, going into this I was not expecting this much controversy, but I guess that’s unsurprising considering it’s Tears of the Kingdom 😂
Edit 2: I had a feeling from the start that someone was going to comment on my amount of hearting 😂

Oh goodness, why is there always one person like you in the comment section of a video praising TotK? People like you have wrote off people who like the game as "receny bias" or "not having played the old games". Gonna be real? When I hear stuff like this and read comments like this? I feel you may be projecting because someone doesn't agree with you

Although I have my problems with TOTK, I absolutely love the game. A lot of the time when I see criticism, it just feels like hate. A good majority of the criticism or hate I see is in the context of BOTW. It sucks that they can’t see it as a stand-alone game, and it always has to be a BOTW sequel to them. Because yeah, it fails as a sequel. But it is an amazing game. So why should the fact it fails as a sequel be the entire reason for someone not enjoying the game?
Maybe I don’t see it the way they do because I didn’t get very long with BOTW, and actually only finished it because TOTK was coming out. But my friend, who did have since release with BOTW, loves TOTK and has her criticisms. And almost none of them are relating to the fact it’s BOTW 2. In fact, her only really BOTW criticism is that (like me) she can’t return to BOTW now after playing TOTK because of the quality of life things TOTK has

I really can't bear those who hate totk, especially when they argue that botw is much better. Sure you might like glitches of nostalgia, but that isn't something which can be created by the developers.. Totk is brilliant and its the loud few who unfortunately represent the quiet many who like totk.

I'm one of those totk haters. I mean, I admire the game in many ways. Yet, I feel that its innovation wasn't fully realized. Most of the new content is great but once you experience something, like going in a cave or going to the depths, the same experience gets repeted without significant variation. This makes exploration dull and unexciting.
I truly believe that botw has a world built with more care and intention than totk. Again, this doesn't make it a bad game, but a missed opportunity.

I wish people didn't try to divide so superficially. Sure you'll have trolls and pure haters. But if someone brings up criticism, I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as hate. And if enough people repeat the same criticism, I don't think it's fair to bundle everything and insist it only comes from a "vocal minority".
I've enjoyed TOTK a lot and yet have a lot more criticism than I had with BOTW, because it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

@ I mean neither game is perfect but I think it’s kinda illogical to see something that has been wildly improved on, even though it was great and is still cool. Kinda like comparing a Spitfire to an F-35

@@fierybird more isn't always better (I won't repeat what I shared in another thread or youtube will end up flagging me for spam...). F-35 may be perfect for speed or battle, but may be overkill or overlooking other aspects of a complete experience.
