What always got me was that Isshin was the adopted guardian Sekiro deserved/needed And reciprocally Sekiro was the grandson who fit his values, who values strengthening of the self and mind The same can arguably be said owl and genichiro; prioritising strength and achieving their goal by any means necessary
I love the fact that Isshin is said to have became as strong as he did by adopting and honing the best techniques of his strongest enemies, which is exactly what Sekiro does with skill points throughout the game. I like to think its the reason why Sekiro is able to beat Owl, since their techniques are more or less identical without senpou and ashina styles.
Nah I disagree with genichiro and owl being the same. Genichiro’s plan was doomed to fail catastrophically but he had very noble motivations behind his actions. Owl was just a power hungry hypocritical warmonger, and nothing came before that.
What strikes me about Issin is... when you fight him as the Sword Saint, he’s stronger than he ever was in life. His body is at its peak, but he also possesses the knowledge he has accumulated, knowledge he likely kept accumulating it all the way until the end of his life. It’s damn cool
Wikipedia says this: "The Japanese honorary title of Kensei (剣聖) is only given to a warrior of legendary skill in swordsmanship. The literal translation of kensei is "sword saint", which implies a higher degree of perfection and moral dimension than the more commonly used "sword master" (剣豪, kengo)." Isshin isn't just a really good swordfighter, he literally went *beyond* normal swordfighting mastery. Another prominent Kensei is Miyamoto Musashi.
“Hesitation is defeat” those words still make me shudder. I remember how long it took me to defeat the sword saint the first time. So much pain...so much anger...so much hesitation.... 😭
Ashina Isshin is my favorite character in all games. He is built up as a legend since the intro cutscenes; a ruthless and efficient killer. But when you get to talk to him, he’s just a chill dude who loves drinking Sake and sharing his wisdom. Isshin exudes huge dad energy; in a short span of time, he showed Wolf more respects and trusts than Owl ever had. I was actually a bit emotional when I had to fight and kill him at the end.
That's one of my favorite parts of the SSI fight. Neither of you wants to kill the other, but you are forced to by Genichiro's Last Wish. It really is a battle of pure skill, with so much respect between the two. What a climax.
His final quote when you defeat him sums his personality perfectly. Wolf defeated Isshin using all the tools at his disposal, something Isshin values greatly. Isshin’s second death was his true death, dying honorably in a fight against a very skilled opponent. There’s no better send-off for such a legend
I still don't fully understand how they managed to pull this off. I too felt a shift in "how I think" when facing him, since all that I had learned upto that point wasn't serving me well. It's amazing, really...
Genichiro is one of my favorite from soft characters, he's a great rival character, is a fun fight every time, and has such a good, tragic story. He's brought down by his own passion and single mindedness to a cause and I find him so interesting
He's also a direct foil to Sekiro, experiencing a kind of "negative" development. Instead of realizing the means to become stronger (making choices as an individual, not for anyone or anything), he accepts his weakness. Completely abandoning himself to bring out what he believes is better. Best character in the entire game.
I find him far deadlier than Isshin (with Bell Demon or the Inner Varian). His AI is merciless and wont give you any quarterwhen your health or posture is low. Always goes for the kill
Somehow i can imagine that the Ministry didn't send an army to deal with the Ashinan soldiers, but rather out of fear that Isshin would manage to put up one hell of a final stand, or maybe even have managed to achieve the same form of immortality that Genichiro and many other creatures have throughout Ashina. Like you said Vaati, I can also imagine that if things had been different, if Genichiro had been more willing to keep his humanity, less willing to forsake everything for his country and more willing to maintain his humanity for his people, that the story would be far more different. Perhaps Ashina would have endured if he had been willing to let Kuro and Wolf go if they had helped him with one final service to their land by helping him and his people send the ministry out the door, without seeking Kuro's power for himself. If he had been just a little more like his grandfather was in his age, wise and understanding that losing ones own soul, ones own self, for the sake of something like power is foolish, more willing to fight and die with his blade in his hands and his head held high as a mortal, than maybe the story would have a happier ending for that small country...maybe... I apologize if my comment is everywhere, I am a little tired right now so my writing skill is not the best, that and i am far from a concise person lol. I might try and write an alternate version of Sekiro as a fanfiction one day when i have the time, but that may take a long time given just how eclectic my writing schedule is lol. Either way, have a great day.
i agree, but i think that genichiro going as far as he did is a partially isshin`s fault, he says it himself that the ashina way is to win no matter what, and he probably taught that to genichiro since he was young, so it`s not surprising that genichiro says he will do whatever it takes to save ashina, that`s what isshin taught him

I think you touched on the tragedy most in this video. It was pride that led to the fall of ashina.Genichiro claims that he wants what's best for the country, but what he truly wants is to be a savior. He wanted to live up to his grandfather's legacy and sacrificed everything to do so when simply asking for help what is left him in a far better position. In short, he crossed the Godzilla threshold, and found the monster turning on him

I think it’s interesting how From Software games always show these amazing worlds during their final hours. Demon Souls, Darks Souls 1, 2, and 3, Bloodblrne, Sekiro, all these games show these complex civilizations, nations, and worlds as they rot and bleed out before their inevitable end at the hands of the player. I think it’s part of what makes them unique; instead of fighting to save the game world, you’re fighting to end it.
One of the best comments on this topic i've read so far. Totally agree and it's fucking sad this is the true way our world runs its course. There is nobody to save us all in the end but the people themselves, neither some hero nor any of all the gods we pray to. And i think this is what FromSoft tries to say, as japanese art more often does compared to western studios, if you have a look at studio Ghibli as an example.
Sekiro has so many well written and likable characters. Both Isshin and Genichiro shine in their own ways. Isshin refuses to betray oneself until the very end, even when everything he built is threatened. Even when age and sickness eat him away from within, he still does whatever he can on his own as the Tengu or by the assistance of Emma and Sekiro. His sense of integrity is truly praiseworthy and I kinda have a feeling Kuro found some form of strength from Isshin as well to "do what needs to be done." Genichiro on the other hand, puts everything on the line to fight for his country, even if it is his own humanity. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win. You can say it is how he viewed the principle behind the Ashina style. Despite the means he employs, you cannot neglect the devotion he has for Ashina. He kinda reminds of Saber Arturia from Fate/Stay Night who was willing to sacrifice everything, including her humanity, to become the ideal king of Camelot and after it's downfall, she desperately sought the Holy Grail to change the past, like how Genichiro sought to use the Dragon's Blood to save Ashina. Note that Saber also gets corrupted by Angra Mainyu due to such mentality, which gives rise to Saber Alter. Plus Genichiro is quite similar to Sekiro as well due to both being orphans who are fighting over things they are devoted to. Both of these characters feel like opposites in their ideals, like Yin and Yang. Yet, I cannot help but admire both of them. Really appreciate how From Software wrote some amazing characters for Sekiro. Now, I'd really love to see a video on Kuro and his relationship with Wolf. Despite being a passive character in the story, I think there is much more to him than one can initially perceive.
Thank you so much for these lore videos. Its like watching a well narrarated documentary. They're so well put together and engrossing to me. I hope you make more, this is quality stuff man. I love them.
Bruh having scars on the back doesn't mean is a sign of cowardness or shame as a swordsman it's a mark of an enemy's cowardness who doesn't fight with honor but rather wound the warrior like a sneak thief
Genichiro and ishine are perhaps my favorite bosses from fromsoftware not only for their challenge as a boss but for their reasons for fighting you. Not out of hatred but simply because your goals and their own clashes with one other and it times of war there was no other choice but to settle it in one final duel. It was so tragic to the point where you can feel the weight of their hopes for a better future in their blades only to then realize no matter what they did, the outcome would be the same.
Thank you for breathing extra life into the game and helping more people to discover its lore. TheParryGod's footage/editing is superb and your narration helps to bring all the relevant pieces together for us to appreciate all the more. If I may offer one humble suggestion, it would be to clarify when you're reading from the game text rather than your own script. A lot of effort went into translating and localising the game, and your own writing is so engaging that it might be hard for on-lookers to tell them apart! I realise that producing these videos requires a lot of hard work and dedication, but if you're able to add even just a bit of text for clarity, I know it would be much appreciated. Hope there's more to come from this excellent series!
This entire game and especially the Isshin sword saint fight taught me to never quit. Fall down 7 times, stand up 8. After beating him (prob 50 tries later) I restarted on NG+ and the game was suddenly easy because of what I had learned.
Its such an amazing feeling. Starting out Genichiro absolutely mops the floor with you which is expected. But on new game+ you have a really good shot at winning against him, showing your mastery over that fight and how experience is one of the most valuable assets in a shinobis tool set
I don't know what it is about Isshin, if its his voice acting or his writing or his badass past and philosophy or what, but he's always riveted me. I love the sake conversations you can have with him, they're great to listen to.
Isshin strikes the perfect balance of tone, imo. He's a mentor, a friend, and the baddest boss fight you can have. There's no pretense or bullshit with Isshin, he's just 'the dude.'
Ahh, the Genishiro/Isshin Sword Saint fight. The fight that gave me such a mental barrier I still have not beaten it, and have neglected to continue playing Sekiro for months.
He was a hassle but beat him after a couple beers lmaoooo the shura ending isshin was way harder for me idk why now I’m new game plus 3 bout to get the plat trophy (: you can do it man , “hesitation is defeat”
It's a bit sad that Genichiro makes an enemy out of an immortal ninja as it backfires so hard that Sekiro single-handedly dismantles all of Ashina's defenses. There was no one left to protect the place when the Interior Ministry finally did show up.
Isshin is one of my favorite characters in all of videogames. He singularly established and held a country together through a focus on perfecting swordsmanship. Yet he recognized that he could not stop the inevitable passage of time and was resolved to fight for the country of Ashina until its and his demise. He also would never corrupt his integrity and actually moved to undermine, although subtly, Genichiro's commitment to capturing Kuro and gaining the dragon's heritage. Even after he's brought back to life and given the dragon's heritage against his will, he uses the opportunity to put on an unparalleled display of combat with hopes to be bested by Sekiro. At least that was my interpretation. In contrast to Genichiro who is a sort of sympathetic/tragic Faustian character, Isshin is the unwavering, principled, uncompromisable, martial arts ubermensch.
This was great. The last few videos before this felt less focused and pretty vague. This returned to a clearer storytelling style like original soulsborne videos. Loved it.
Your videos are just so good and high quality. Usually when a youtuber I'm subscribed too uploads I watch the video when I have a bit of free and then finish it later. Since I know your videos are so good, I wait until I'm in a quiet environment where I can really focus on the story you tell with your videos. Amazing job as always, keep up the good work.
Just goes to show how strong Wolf becomes throughout the game. He struggled against Genichiro in the beginning, but went on to defeat *the* Sword Saint Isshin Ashina. A man that devoted every waking moment of his life to developing and fine tuning his combat prowess. The No.1 of the Sekiro Verse. I love the story of Sekiro. From Software sure know how to make narrative driven games.
I played through almost this whole damn game once and it never really clicked. But I rewatched one of your Sekiro videos and it inspired me to try it again, and I'm so glad I did- Sekiro is amaaaazing!!
Easily my favourite from soft character. They made such leaping progress with characterisation with sekiro. He’s very interesting and cool. Too bad he had to go.
What's truly scary about Isshin is that, in his prime, he was down an eye. Just how formidable do you have to be to improve your swordsmanship after losing an eye? What a final boss
i'm usually not one to comment but this time the way you narrated in conjunction with the video (and it's editing this time around as well) was top notch. I appreciate your ever growing efforts to provide us with this amazing content and I hope to see you improve even further :D.
i think it's extra brutal knowing that isshin has a giant scar across his stomach in all versions of him, meaning that sekiro takes the "win no matter what" advice to heart, even against the man who gave him the advice, evidence by the fact that serkiro kills isshin by cutting across that very scar
Genichiro is one of the most well written character in video games history. I wish he can have his own game where we get to fight as genichiro for Ashina.
Heretical to the Ashina, Isshin is not the only person that comprises the Ashina. It was considered heretical because it was from someone outside the Ashina.
In the past, the Ashina fought a war against the Okami, a war on which lightning was frequently used against mortal men as an offensive weapon. While the memories faded, the fear remained, with lightning becoming a symbol of a supernatural force that few understood. Those who sought to duplicate it's effects may have been seen as heretics attempting to emulate some unknown enemy from long ago.
Maybe ds3 chaos blade is the black mortal blade? "A cursed sword of unknown origin bearing uncanny streaks on its blade. Attacks also damage its wielder. The sword is not unlike a thing misshappen, granted life, but never welcome in this world. In other words, chaos itself. Skill: Hold Assume a holding stance to rapidly execute a lunging slash with normal attack, or a deflecting parry with strong attack."
My headcanon says that someday they'll make an open world game like Chrono trigger where you can travel between worlds and dimensions and have 39484891 different endings
I think Genichiro opened the gate because he thought he would never be able to kill you, but Isshin would. So he sacrificed himself for the he loves the most, Ashina.
Isshin has become one of my favourite from soft characters of all time. He’s such a layered character, everyone loves a badass old man right? Plus the experiences of drinking sake with him was super enjoyable.
Can we talk about how hard Sekiro’s voice actor went with that last “Farewell.” He manages to put his and Isshin’s entire relationship and dynamic, all the emotion, loyalty, tragedy, and grief, into one single word, his final word to the only man who ever recognized his fighting skills as a duty rather than a bloodlust.
Best FromSoftware games channel ever! Discovered so many plot gaps in these vids, it almost became like watching TV series, one at a time every evening. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Vaati. I have watched your videos a long time. now i must say... you do it like NO ONE ELSE. thank you for sharing your talent with us all. your work is great, my friend.
I really like how Sekiro doesnt have any "bad" people. everyone is fighting for his own reasons like trying to protect kuro, defending its own country or just trying to unite all of Japan
I wouldn't really condemn Genichiro's character here... Ashina *is* already dead , its castle is already in ruin , its army's dead corpses laying unburied everywhere , no salt to purify them either , which means that plagues will soon follow as well ; the clan managed to survive the last assault from the ministry's army but only thanks to Isshin's presence...what's coming next is going to be their last desperate stand . It is clear to Genichiro that his presence and Gyoubu's won't be enough to save the country and the ministry men won't be stopped by a bull or by a couple of ogres , he *must* resort to desperate measures . As you mentioned..."a country is made up of its people" and these people are everything to Genichiro , they changed his life around so deeply that he feels life-bound to defend them and yet he's been unable to , he's only been able to see all of the people he knew and loved die one by one in front of his eyes despite his best efforts to avoid it ; he can't allow himself to give up , he doesn't want to , he won't , he'd prefer sacrificing all that he is and has achieved in order to save them , that is how grateful to the country he is . It is at this point that he starts seeking out the means to assure that his people and land survive , that he starts mastering Tomoe's arts , that he drinks off the sediment of the rejuvenating waters to achieve an imperfect yet desperate immortality , that he starts looking for Kuro so that even if he was on his own he could eventually manage to change the tides of the war . Kuro and Sekiro wouldn't have sided with Genichiro even if he didn't specifically go after them . Sekiro and Kuro are seen trying to leave the country via the moat's secret passage both at the beginning and at the end of the game , Wolf's iron code puts Kuro's protection before anything else so it is likely that they were just planning to leave Ashina before the situation escalated any further . Genichiro is a nationalist if you will , yes...but he's also a tragic hero in the story...and so is Robert's father , so is Gyoubu...and many more . This is also one of the many things I like about Sekiro as a game...it's not a good against evil sort of struggle...it's a clash between different humans , their beliefs , ideals and whatnot all equally relatable and reasonable . All of them are trapped in this calm before the storm , their stories unfolding as the tempest approaches and finally rages forth , the impending shadow of this all-crushing war which shows them for who they really are .
Thank, i feel the same. Excellent comment! Genichiro is bound to Ashina, he goes through a dark path for her and the same does Wolf, because all of Sekiro's actions for Kuro bring a lot of death to many innocents too.
Isshin was so cool, this is my favorite From Soft fight against an old legendary man. Especially because like you said, he returned at his peak instead of us fighting him at his worst.

Wrong idiot, Genichiro sacrificing himself for others while Owl is doing the reverse
The literal translation of kensei is "sword saint", which implies a higher degree of perfection and moral dimension than the more commonly used "sword master" (剣豪, kengo)."
Isshin isn't just a really good swordfighter, he literally went *beyond* normal swordfighting mastery.
Another prominent Kensei is Miyamoto Musashi.

“Hesitation is defeat” those words still make me shudder. I remember how long it took me to defeat the sword saint the first time. So much pain...so much anger...so much hesitation.... 😭
I think it took me around 10 tries. still he is one of the hardest fights. obviously
That's the neat part about him. He is actually not just a ruthless and efficient killer, but also a respectable and relaxing man.
His final quote when you defeat him sums his personality perfectly. Wolf defeated Isshin using all the tools at his disposal, something Isshin values greatly. Isshin’s second death was his true death, dying honorably in a fight against a very skilled opponent. There’s no better send-off for such a legend
God this game is full of so much metaphor and wisdom, ain't it
Isshin didn't just teach me the way of the sword, he also showed me that Sekiro is Bloodborne 2 since I gained a crap ton of insight fighting him...

Best character in the entire game.
yes, same. its so, so easy to sympathize with him. sekiro has the best charas

@@FlameOfRoyeca Trolling or dumb ? He was ultra easy
@@warrioremperor6320 Inner variant dumbass. The kind that chains sakura out of his ass
Its an astute observation . Beautiful explaination .Be more confident .Don't u understand ishin ?
Hesitate n u lose..
i agree, but i think that genichiro going as far as he did is a partially isshin`s fault, he says it himself that the ashina way is to win no matter what, and he probably taught that to genichiro since he was young, so it`s not surprising that genichiro says he will do whatever it takes to save ashina, that`s what isshin taught him

His sense of integrity is truly praiseworthy and I kinda have a feeling Kuro found some form of strength from Isshin as well to "do what needs to be done."
Genichiro on the other hand, puts everything on the line to fight for his country, even if it is his own humanity.

I love this comment so much
This was great. The last few videos before this felt less focused and pretty vague. This returned to a clearer storytelling style like original soulsborne videos. Loved it.

Genichiro is one of the most well written character in video games history. I wish he can have his own game where we get to fight as genichiro for Ashina.
I still do not get why Tomoe's style is called heretical, when Isshin states that anything goes as long as you win
Fun fact: Miyamoto Musashi himself said that in a fight anything goes. "Dishonor can be washed away with victory".
Ashina samurai don't all follow Isshin's ideology.
A prequel around Isshin and Genichiro would be pretty awesome.
Gotta say, the editing for these videos are top notch. I mean, so cinematic, so beautiful.
Also something I realized playing recently; Dragon Flash is reminiscent of the Divine Dragon’s overhead swing attack.

Massive credit to all the voice actors and u vaati
*Hesitation is defeat.* So true when you fight him, if you aren't aggressive and constantly parrying you will lose.
