    Kent, I discovered your videos just a couple years ago. Watching this "earlier" video was interesting in itself, but I also noted how your presentation style has changed over the years. I must say this video includes some basic footage, which for the most part is edited out of your more current videos. An example is, when switching from the outside to the inside of turning, this video shows you actually swapping out the lathe accessories. IMHO, I appreciate and enjoy the inclusion of these small details, especially given the instructional format of your videos. I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge, so that I and others, can discover the treasures hidden within the logs, which might otherwise end up as mulch or firewood. Thumbs ups.

    I am fairly new to wood bowl turning. Kents videos have helped tremendously. Have been turning about 3 years. Have 2 inexpensive lathes, an 8" and a 12". Have turned some very nice bowels,,, but have had more than a fair share of problems. This video on supports was a fantastic help.

    Another great tutorial Kent. I can't believe there are 18 people that did not like it, it was gretat for the music alone, and the nice relaxing sound of the birds in the background. I hate waste, in fact I pretty much usually only put my bins out about once a month (unless I have a had a big clean out). Part of my ideaology and basis of my side project in wood working is to use reclaimed, and.or waste wood whenever possible. Otherwise it only goes to waste to gets burnt. Keep on keeping on Kent, I love your work. Always an inspiration.

    Hey Kent, I really like the idea of making many small cuts to initially shape the outside of your bowl. I will have to try that the next time. One small thing, it would be nice if you tell us what kind of finish your using as you use it. That way we can see the results of that particular finish. Personally I generally use Danish oil, Tung oil, mineral oil, and Feed N Wax and polyurethane. I also occasionally use stains. Would love to see what results other products give, Thanks for the video. Yall have a wonderful day.

    A friend (turner) sent me your URL. I started with your oldest video --- now I intend to work my way to your newest video ( may have to skip ahead occasionally). Very well done. You are correct, turning bowls is very addictive. Thanks for the clarity of your demonstration. I may be able to catch up in the next few months ( I also have to spend some time turning ). Looking forward to my --- earliest to latest -- journey)

    I have just recently found Kent's home page and also this You Tube on Tool Rest positioning. First on the You Tube I found it to be an excellent discussion on a subject that is so basic to wood turning that it is rarely addressed. It was thorough, well presented, and above all provided a complete coverage of this important topic. Kent was very clear, hit all the important aspects of Tool Rest positioning and included basic safety considerations to keep you safe in your own wood turning operations. As to Kent's home page TurnAWoodBowl.com I was blown away by both the volume and variety of topics covered across his 86 plus separate Articles and E-Books. He has very thoroughly researched each topic to the depth/degree necessary to ensure you, as the reader, get as much info as you require to ensure both a safe and fun wood turning experience. Thank You Kent. Richard Stitcher

    I’m just a beginning wood turner. Have de some nice pieces and some on trial and definitely error. Now I done a lot of turning in school and remember a lot of it. I worked on a metal lathe and wood lathe and these were classes at a Tech. School. I can honestly say that watching your vids and some of the info you provide goes above and beyond what anyone can get from a Trade School. Everything you explain or go through is always a learning experience. Thank you for the knowledge you put out and all the little things in between. I also want to say Thanks for the time you have put out to make these vids. As you say....”Happy Turning”.

    Hello Kent. I am new to turning and to your channel. Really great videos - clear and concise, and a pleasure to watch. Your channel has become my primary source for learning to turn. Thank you. I just watched this quarter sawn video and noticed that you turned the bowl through to completion. I also just watched your Twice Turned video so am wondering what about this piece of wood allowed it to be once turned? Was the log it was cut from dry? Did you let the blank dry before turning?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  4 года назад

      Good question. The wood was a few years old and the moisture content was reduced. Plus, the quarter sawn grain seems to just pull together a small amount. And, I have turned many pieces from this tree and I know that it doesn't move too much. So, the short answer, is experience with this wood. Remember every piece of wood is different, so pay attention, let it teach you. Happy Turning!

    Really needed to see this video! Thanks for the simple/easy explanation! Do you have a minimum diameter recommendation (of the log) for achieving suitable quater-sawn material? I've been acquiring some within the 20" range. Thanks!

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  5 лет назад +1

      20" is great. It all depends on how much quarter sawn you need. The sections will be the pith less than half the diameter. In other words, a 20" piece halfed equals 10" minus whatever the pith takes up, leaving probably 7-9" wide pieces of quarter sawn planks.

    Hey Kent! Great meeting you now. I’ve been following along on TurnAWoodBowl for quite a while. Your writing is great. Your graphics are exceptionally marvelous (they certainly drew me in). I’m glad that you’ve added RUclips to your repertoire. I thought the video was well done and very informative. I have a very special place in my heart for quartersawn turnings. This last May I drooled while watching Mike Mahoney turn a massive QS white oak platter in person at the Utah Woodturning Symposium. As a new turner that had me in awe. I try to keep all the QS grain I can from the trees I process. And in true Turn A Wood Bowl fashion I’m sure you finished those in Tried & True, right?
    All the best,
    Scott

    Hi Kent! I’m a really big fan of your website - so glad to see you posting on RUclips as well. I have a question about the bowl you showed before you started turning. (You also show it towards the end.) It’s a relatively shorter and wider than the bowl you turn in the video. Did you use a tenon or mortise for that bowl? I’m about to turn a wood blank that’s about five inches wide but only two inches deep, probably in a style similar to that bowl of yours, and I’m trying to decide whether a mortise or tenon makes sense given that it’s not going to be a a very deep bowl. Thanks!

    • @AndyCarvin
      @AndyCarvin 6 лет назад

      Just for clarity, I’m referring to the bowl you’re holding in your left hand around 22:30 in the video.

    • @KentWeakley
      @KentWeakley 6 лет назад

      Hi Andy,
      I used a tenon. About ninety percent of my bowls are turned with tenons. I'm just a big fan of the tenon. I like leaving nothing on the bottom, if possible. A mortise will afford you a little more room however with that thinner stock. I'd probably use a mortise with what you just explained. Good luck with it. Happy Turning!
