    Extremely interesting! You didn't address how much time you saved with the beads as related to our traditional methods of drying...plus I'd be interested in knowing how many times you can recharge the beads (do they wear out? are there a limited life product?). Great video on a completely new topic to the turning community and I thank you for sharing the topic with us.

    thank you so much for your time making this video. I am new to wood turning and have not done it since high school. I just got my new lathe and tools, and have been so stressed seeing that drying rough lumber is one year per inch! I have local wood, elm cottonwood and some birch, and it is all green. ( still standing on my land). I am on a budget and can not buy blanks for all the projects I am so excited about making.

    I have been using silica gel from Amazon for almost a year with success, it works well.

    Very interesting, enjoyed your video. Never thought about desiccants. Probably not available in the UK.

    I am in the UK and have used silica gel to dry wet wood.. worked well on holly and laburnum so far.

    How long does the silica gel usually take to dry a bowl?

    This is great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. How long do you to keep the a "green" bow in the bag? And how do you know if the bow is dry enough? ( I am a brand new turner..)

      In the beads normally 48 hours. If I am air drying, I weigh it with a food scale and don't consider it dry until it quits loosing weight for 2 months in a row.

    How long does it take to dry the bowl compared to regular drying ?

  • @chadvoller

    If anyone is afraid of direct contact on the wood, just wrap in a layer of newspaper. It will slow down the drying, but still way faster than air drying. I use this for unturned pepper mill and other misc small to medium size blanks.

    Thanks for providing this information. I might have missed it if you mentioned in your presentation, but, how long does it take to dry a bowl?

      I usually leave mine in the beads 48 hours. I have forgotten them and left them up to 4 days without any negative side effects.

    Now I know all wood does dry different but on average how long does this method take to dry the blanks.

      I leave my rough outs in the beads for 48 hours. Though the guys at TMI products say that if the wood is thin enough that 24 hours will work. I'm usually just not in quite that much of a hurry. :)

    I wonder if you could use rice?

    • @missouriturner
      @missouriturner  4 года назад

      You can. I've a friend in our local club that has used it but has found mixed success. And it is hard to dry back out without cooking it :)

    So I live in Virginia and with wet woods and the humidity here I have been having an issue with mold. Have you found this product helps minimize?
