    I met a guy once that told me "I never learn other people's music- i just come up with my own". Saw him play several times, turns out the guy fucking sucked. Point being, sure being original is great, but were at an age where there's so many amazing guitarists before us, it would be stupid not to learn their stuff, adapt from it, take what's useful and add it to our vocab. Not to mention, guys like Dann get hired because they are good enough to replicate those "original styles" you so admire.

    I'm always amazed when a person feels the need to post critical comments about a guitarist/band that they already know that they don't like. Why watch the video then? Oh, because you want everyone to know how smart you are and how great your taste in music is and how wrong everyone else is.

    Hmm. Well, you learn something new every day. I've been a DH fan since the first Giant CD came out. But I never would have suspected that his rhythm sound is so focused on the middle pickup. That's the one I curse at whenever I accidentally "choose" it.

    Dan Huff is one of the greatest in studio beside Luke and Landau.
    Nice rack by the way-3xstereo amps. Where's my VHT 2150 nowadays???

    @GuitarsOfArp - yep Machacek and Abasi are definitely doing original stuff. Problem is Anasi is doing it on an 8 string guitar so its not something your average player can relate to, but its impressive anyway. Machacek plays in a genre that I'm not really into but you can really get some fresh ideas from watching and listening, thanks for the heads up..

    @GuitarsOfArp I know Guthrie Govan from Asia and he used to be a columnist for a guitar magazine in the UK, can't remember which one. He's got all the theory and technique down but at least from his Asia stuff it just sounds like Mike Slamer or a lot of other guys. Will check out the other two guys, never heard of them in my ignorance.

    @ hittingnote75 Good point. It was indeed recorded in the early 90s. I meant to type that. My bad.

    @Veaseify Yeah, I get the bit about tab, which always makes me laugh - but there's a lot to learn from Huff. I'm a MASSIVE Danny Gatton fan, but let's face it, he wasn't the most original guitarist either. However, he was an INCREDIBLE player, and as with Huff, you can tell as soon as you hear a few notes that your are listening to a clearly superior musician. Dann Huff has worked out a lot and he has BIG ears, like Gatton. You have to aspire to that level of listening to find your own voice.

    @twangbarfly When I was learning to play I heard Cream do Crossroads and thought no-one could ever play a better solo than that...Later I used to get those Arlen Roth 'Hot Licks' tapes and thought nobody else had chops like that, then you go out to a bar and see some unknown dude pulling off those licks in a cheesy cover band and you realise its not that big a deal to just copy someone else. What is really tough is coming up with something original so thats what I like to hear now..Peace

    @Veaseify I see. So you basically have no musicians you look up to, just musicians you look down on, like Dann Huff, who in your view are all going through the motions. FWIW, I'm not a fan of this style of music, but it is crystal clear to me, as "a guitar player", that this guy has OUTSTANDING TOUCH and PHRASING and a GREAT ear. His sound may be dated, as he freely admits, but whose isn't, especially from this era? I really
    don't understand your motivation to insult this very fine guitarist.

    @Veaseify I don't hear that many really original players - but I hear different levels of playing ability and stamping music with your own stylistic approach. Dann's music is not orginal, but I'd but him up there with some of my favourites. I know what you're saying about Clapton - he's not up there with my favourites. As far as compostion goes, if all I ever heard for the rest of my life was the music of Bach I wouldn't complain. OK take care.

    @chooseyourblues: this was recorded at the end of the 90s and at that point everything about Giant was generic and trend-following. Just late to the party. Basically Foreigner with shred guitar. Not new or clever in any way. It was lowest-common-denominator crap like this that bought on the alternative music boom of the 90s.

    To me it sounds like what you would get if you put a bunch of excellent session guys together, technically flawless but lacking any depth or soul. People who think this is great must shake their heads in bewilderment at the Black Keys early stuff, but I know what i'd rather listen to..and I'm a guitar player!

  • @leopoldohernandez

    man you guys must not know who dann Huff is what a shame, No soul or depth? He brings down EJ and Clapton hands down and I love EJ but Dann is Dann . Just look at more vids.

    @twangbarfl Guess I'm just tired of hearing the same old stuff. From Django to Les Paul to Hendrix to Danny Gatton to Zappa to Robert Fripp to Alex Lifeson (2112 onwards) to the way SRV approached blues there have been guys who came up with different and interesting styles and applied it to their music. Even Satch was fresh and exciting when he first came out. People can't work anything out for themselves anymore -'Where can I get the tab for this' appears on the most basic things..its pitiful

      Dude, are you complaining about Dann Huff? LOL! No one alive is better or equal except maybe Steve Stevens for touch feel and soul in their fingers! Ed Van Halen comes in the same category for fingers and soul! Its not about how many notes...it's about when and what notes and touch!

  • @twangbarfly

    @Veaseify Stop telling us we're wasting our time trying to find out about guitar playing from generic session men like Dann Huff and tell us all who we should be listening to instead - come on, stop keeping the good stuff to yourself, out with it! Help all of us poor deluded souls out of our hair-metal time-warp/bank elevator and into the brave new world of guitar music where you stand tall...

    Once you've been playing for a couple of years you should stop copying other peoples styles and try to come up with something of your own..Its tough if you're in a covers band where you have to play the original solo for the song or a blues band where anything too far out of the box just sounds wrong but if you write your own stuff you should be able to come up with something. A guitar solo should be a piece of music with a beginning, middle and end, not just a bunch of licks

  • @Veaseify
    @Veaseify 13 лет назад

    @noteworker1971
    Technically he's excellent but in this video all he does is throw together a few bog standard licks using that godawful massively overprocessed guitar sound that session musicians are so fond of. I don't see whats 'weird' about that, its the kind of guitar playing you hear on hold music for Banks..I'm not surprised he is now a producer, thats what happens to musicians with no original ideas but a great working knowledge of studio equipment
