I actually did not expect that big of a change. Kit B and C are massive improvements IMO. Cool experiment! I'm wondering how much of the change is in different gain structure though. Like the the sound changes in the snare could be a difference in OH volume or bottom mic volume etc.
I think they were all worthy changes. Hard to say if they were all better in whichever contexts you'll be working in the future, but it felt like the synergy between the kits and pre's were improved in all cases. Just MHO. Good work! Thanks for taking the time to document and experiment.
One of my goals was to get as wide a sonic difference between the three kits as possible, and it felt like this definitely helped in that regard. Thanks for watching!
Great changes overall for workflow. The 3 new examples sound great. The biggest effect I detect is the at each set sound more cohesive. So my take away is mixing and matching pres across an instrument or performance is not always a net positive. There is a synergistic relationship in using a common type of mic pre across an instrument, if not a whole project.
Thank you for that - "cohesive" was the word I was searching for to describe the changes I heard (and couldn't come up with it myself)! Yeah, I had definitely seen the "mix and match" approach to preamps being lauded over the years, and it worked just fine for me over the years. But I really dig this new consolidated arrangement. I keep remembering that most of my favorite records were recorded with all the mics going into a particular console, so that's going to be my approach going forward!
I actually liked the "modern" kit better with the first preamp setup. Something about the cymbal sound changed with the RME12 setup. But all in all a great setuup and excatly what I do in my space with two kits permanently mic'd up and ready to go. I have two C&C kits set up, one with many toms and a "modern" rock/pop sound. Mic'd up with "clean" microphones (earthworks, beyerdynamics) and the other kit has a more vibey sound with kangaroo heads and tuned for a more of a singer/songwriter feel using vintage mics (414's and ribbons mostly) for a more colored sound. Love your videos!
Kit C revamp: gained clarity and lost soul, and thank you so much for the demo! You gotta put that SSL back to work, too. I’m interested in how you like the Nuance. Maybe updates us over the next few months please.
Not without it being a big PITA. I try to make switching between kits and sessions as seamless and easy as possible, so I just want to setmy mics and preamps up once and then forget them!
To make a proper comparison, you would have to use the same kit and the same mics. So this is no comparison at all and any preferences your viewers have will mostly likely be for the kit, not the mics or the pres.
I may end up doing something along those lines one of these days, but I really only had a day or two of downtime between sessions so this was the best I could come up with in a tight timeframe. Honestly, my big question on this round was whether I could hear a significant difference between the mics being in somewhat random preamps versus all in one particular model. I definitely can, so the next round (one fine day...) will be finding out which is the ultimate preamp for my drums. Thanks for watching!

Awesome setup 👍🏼
I liked the daking on A and B kits. The takes on C sounded very different, more aggressive with the Seb
Haha i do the same thing with the binder clips, love em! Great sounds my man!
So useful in so many ways!

Love your videos!
That sounds like a great setup. How do you like the kangaroo heads?
@@DylanWissing love them! They record beautifully. Warm and full of tone.
The Sebatrons pres have the most presence and sound the best to me.
They're really great, aren't they? I'm a big fan, and think about adding another unit
I'm liking Kit B...new preamps arrangement sounding good!
Those Dakings rock!

I'm loving the Nuance! Sounds great, so simple to use. I'm really happy I went that route
Good stuff!
Would you mind doing a video on how you tune the heads on your kits?
Well, on these WTS drums, I simply use the single tuning peg! So easy to use, and they just sound great
def like the dakings the best. i have one of their comps and i love it. get some 1073 style, your drums deserve them!
Next on the list. They've just never really been in the budget, sadly!
The mix of dakin and sebatron sounds best, is there a way you could use them in all of the kits? haha

HEY! I HAVE THAT SAME LABEL MAKER!!! :D
The best!
The dakings have a sexier top end imo. I dig em.
That was the biggest difference that I noticed. They really make the snare crack!
I think you should care more about your cables and patchbays, I know it sucks as an expense but it makes quite a significative difference IMO
Can you explain? I'm curious what you have experienced
@@DylanWissing It sounds closed, unopened, unclear

The 80s analog drum brains look interesting.....
The poor man's Simmons!
