  • Breitling has always been a brand associated wth aviation; pioneering the Pilot's watch far beyond a simple "large dial with clear numbers format. " Anyone who's ever watched an air show, or a Red Bull Air Race event, will have seen Breitling's racing planes taking home wins. Since 1884, Breitling has been obsessed with moving forward the art of precision chronometry, function, and, more recently, safety, with their innovative "Emergency" series of locator beacon-equipped wrist watches. Breitling has shown some innovative technologies, interesting designs, and passion for extreme human activities, which makes their story very interesting.

    You guys should do a episode on the rise and fall of watch brands that horologist hate. Brands like movado and invicta that were once real watch manufactures and Respected but their ethos changed and degraded the company. Then objectively elaborate on as to why their products aren't good anymore. And finally elaborate on some of the good attributes if theres any.

    No mention of Sinn and the Navitimer? Helmut Sinn bought the rights to the Navitimer and apparently is responsible for keeping Breitling afloat, and still produce they're version of the Navitimer to this day (the 903).

    The Sinn 903 is another watch to mention during the time when Breitling was selling off assets. They sold the rights to the Navitimer to Sinn which then made the 903. It looks exactly the same and is still made today albeit slightly different.

    The thing with the frequency: the 121,5 is still the emergency radio frequency in civil aviation. But the frequency isn't scanned by satellites anymore, they switched to 406 MHz So the new Breitling Emergency watches can send their beacon signal on a freuqency which is picked up by satellites around the world and doesn't interferre with the civil aviation emergency frequency which may also be used for talking. (sometimes it is suggested for planes to switch spare radio equipment to 121,5 so that if they "miss" their supposed frequency they can be reached.)

      @thewatchmakersworkshop 5 лет назад +3

      That's right. When Breitling was shutting down operations Helmut Sinn purchased the rights to the Navitimer and Ollech & Wajs purchased the parts inventory. So there are some identical Navitimer watches from that time period that even use Breitling signed parts with no Breitling name on the dials. The Sinn 903 is now simply called The Navigation Chronograph but still looks the same.

      @@The_Greg_5000 well my chronomat is my largest watch at 44mm, but the dial is all black and not very flashy. The Bentleys are pretty much all gigantic and gaudy looking IMO. I also dont tend to normally be a fan of in your face brand collaboration. Mostly I really like my chronomat though because it is chunky and solid as hell. I can do harsher activities with it and not think about damaging it, where as I would never do some of that stuff with it watches

    Eh, the Omega and Space thing is no different than people believing that the iPhone was the first smartphone to market or the Demon as the world's fastest production car. The latter really only applies to American cars and specific parameters to call it that. Luminox brands itself as the watch for Navy Seals, but most just wear a $30 G-Shock. Milspec is something that people go nuts over when they hear it, but Milspec is just a standard and doesn't mean "the best". It's marketing, stuff with stories sell better than those without. I would say 95% of people with a dive watch have never been in more than 10ft of water with it. 50M water resistance is plenty for the vast majority of people who actually dive, but everyone and their mother wants a 200M+ rating on them.

    2250 isn't cheap matt... it's more than all my watches combined

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire 5 лет назад +3

      We are playing in economies of scale here. Watches are an expensive hobby, and prices discussed are all relative. $2250 for a brand-name swiss-made dive watch is very reasonable. I'm sorry that not everyone can afford it, but a Mustang GT is cheap speed, and not everyone has $35k for one of those either.

    • @fondajames
      @fondajames 5 лет назад

      @@TheSmokingTire it is expensive but it can also be relative. Microbrands than use seiko/miyota movements can have incredibly comparable specs for 1/10th the price or less. You cant forget that you are rich or sound it compared to many of your audience

    • @mattwasilewicz9677
      @mattwasilewicz9677 5 лет назад

      I dunno, 2k is pretty inexpensive when looking at luxury watches. I wouldn't consider a micro brand with a Seiko movement to be a luxury watch, but more like a respectable every wearer that is not a quartz. A Rolex Sub is typically a good benchmark to base luxury watch prices from since it is so universal no matter where you go. Considering that diver is a fifth the price of a Sub, I would definitely agree that it is both inexpensive, and good value.

    • @fondajames
      @fondajames 5 лет назад

      @@mattwasilewicz9677 any watch is a luxury in smart phone era. I have a 300m diver with all the specs youd expect from a rolex except for the seiko movement in it and it cost less than $250. I also have a seiko presage that Matt has even had on this show with identical specs to a $3000 heuer even in materials but costs almost 1/10th. It just isn't handmade and saying swiss on it. 2000 is still expensive regardless but relative to other swiss brands sure its cheap but those advertise a ton more than any microbrand would. But plenty had more interesting materials or designs that still make them unmistakably luxury items. Zelos for example are all under 1k but many even come with meteorite dials. That is truly luxury level but again far below that breitling you call cheap. Names carry too much weight in watch pricing

    • @mattwasilewicz9677
      @mattwasilewicz9677 5 лет назад

      @@fondajames I definitely agree with you that you can buy a lot of watch for under $500. And yes it's all relative to what you are comparing them to. The point I believe he was trying to make in the video is that for that particular watch, when compared to what else is out there in the luxury market, it definitely represents good value and is inexpensive by comparison. Compare that watch to a Sub or a Fify Fathoms diver, and you definitely have a value proposition. And absolutely, when buying a luxury watch you are also buying the name, prestige, and everything else that goes along with it. The more you spend, you typically start to get more, like finishing qualities, bracket and clasp fit and finish, and even hand finishing when you get into the bug bucks. Same reason everyone always says a Corvette is cheap performance and good value, because when compared to a Ferarri you get a lot of the same performance for 1/4 the price.

      In all fairness to Breitling, they do have historical watches in the 48mm size range like the "Fried Egg" Chronomat from the 70's. So it is not totally off brand to be making some of the very large current day Breitlings like the Navitimer or Avenger in 48mm, or the Chronomat in 47mm.

    1st watch in space was a POS soviet-factory Sturmanskie. Carpenter screwed the pooch on his 1/only mission AND splashed his Navitimer in the ocean, completely trashing it. Next mission up Wally Schirra wore a Speedmaster, next after that Gordon Cooper wore an Accutron Astronaut. Some GMT Masters flew to the moon but not strapped to the outside of a moonwalking spacesuit. No monopoly on spaces watches at all.

      I don't understand this - we have 2 ads; the same 2 ads we have had the entire time: Crown & Caliber and Bee Line Coffee. Then I spend 30-45 seconds intro-ing the topic. Literally nothing has changed. occasionally it's 2 minutes 40, occasionally it's 3 minutes 20. Either way, you can very, very easily skip through the ads if you don't want to listen to them, and on RUclips you have tons of visual cues to boot. I have literally zero sympathy for someone who counts the seconds when we deliver a 90 minute+ show with 3 minutes of ads right at the beginning.
