  • The Gaslight Anthem from New Jersey formed in 2006 and released their new album "Get Hurt" this year. We met Brian Fallon and Alex Rosamilia before their show in Düsseldorf a few days ago. They performed a special semi-acoustic version of their song '1000 Years'.

    __________________________________
Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.

You're crazy if you don't like the acoustic version. I like this song even more after listening to this. I feel like it's much deeper, the lyrics have a more profound effect.

I love how he weares the same blouse as in the Letterman gig. Some famous guys never wear the same clothes two times and even see it as a shameful thing, but Brian is just down to earth with it.

This song and this version of it just gets me so damn deep. I know a lot of people don't understand why, but it's definitely one of the saddest songs I have ever had a pleasure of listening.

I get it. This particular version of this song is one of my favorite songs of all time. It is so sad and seems to just speak right to the sadness in all of us. It's just brilliantly done.

Well, the moon I know, in the town I live, is steady as she waits.
It seems as though she yearns for me and calls me by my name.
Sometimes she says come to me, kiss me while it's late.
And other nights she's just hanging with the stars.
And I've seen her waiting from all her mistakes
And what if he never comes when you call?
And, "hey, it's alright," she says,
"Once upon a time I lived a perfect night.
Hey, in another life," she says,
"In a dream of mine from a thousand years ago."
    "Don't look back," I heard a voice, in velvet I couldn't see.
The pictures then were black and white, and the details were in between.
I heard about a woman once, who did everything ever asked of her.
She died last week and her last words were, "it wasn't worth it."
And I've seen her patience through all her mistakes
And who's gonna save you now?
And, "hey, it's alright," she says,
"Once upon a time I lived a perfect night.
Hey, in another life," she says,
"In a dream of mine from a thousand years ago."
    "Hey, it's alright," she says,
"Once upon a time I lived a perfect night.
Hey, in another life," she says,
"In a dream of mine from a thousand years ago."
    "Hey, it's alright," she says.
"Hey, in another life," she says.
Way back when, when we became friends, I was you, you were my defense.
    And quiet was the night.
You showed me that bridge, and it brought you home.
You told me about it and I never let it go,
And I guess I might've been doing the same.
    Anyhow, quiet was the night.

Brian was always gonna end up doing something acoustic, whether it be The Horrible Crowes (not strictly acoustic but was closer to it than The GSA stuff.) Reason is imo is because he's always written on acoustic but also (imo) he's one of those rare artists that the songwriting is good enough to stand alone..with just an acoustic and his soul bearing lyrics/singing..he leaves it all out there all the time. I don't know if you've heard of Justin Townes Earle (sadly passed away aged 37 last year) but if you like Fallon, I urge you to check out his song 'Moving on' but listen to the live KEXP version..it blows the pants off the album version, because like Brian the honesty/vulnerability in his writing shines through when it's just them and a guitar. (JTE somehow makes it sounds like two guitars..just '3 chords and the truth' if done well, will never get old.) Hope you get to check it out. All the best from Ireland 🇮🇪

A solid gaslight fan here but I think get hurt suffered from they way it was produced. I'm Not technically minded enough to explain further but I'm sure many will understand me. But every live performance I went to, of any of the get hurt songs - they sounded amazing. I'd walk away thinking yeah I actually do love that album as much as the rest.. Until I heard it. Performances like this prove it for me. It wasn't the songs. It wasn't the playing. It was just something in the way the album versions came together. The live version of have mercy will always be one of my Favs

Matty Jones I think get hurt will just be one of those albums that the fans either love or they’re just neutral with. Some songs on that record are dynamite - this in particular is one of my favourite gaslight songs.
I like to think in 10 or 20 years time that get hurt will just be that gaslight record that’s never first in line but the tracks reach people on different levels when people dive in. Get Hurt isn’t my favoured gaslight record but when I play it through there’s so much that makes me want more from that period of the band. I suppose if you wanted to look even deeper the content could perhaps reflect more on the lyrics/Brian’s personal life and then in turn how the listener perceives it.

I think it's just cause it seems so different and somber. The electric version sounds way more upbeat. This has a very somber tone. I like it personally.
