This tutorial is fantastic. I usually take my car to my mechanic, but chose to do this for my daughter. Just as easy as he makes it look. Listen to and follow every step and your good. Thanks very much.
jimthecarguy ,I have a 2001 Nissan sentra, I changed the thermostat on it,changed the antifreeze and my overflow is over filling, I will get heat sometimes and sometimes just cold ,what could be wrong?oh and I noticed that the lower house stay cold when I don't get heat at all.
I work on cars occasionally and I usually look for help on RUclips. Thank goodness I came across Jimmy the Car Guy! Your tutorials are easy to follow and can help anyone be a mechanic enough to fix your car. Thanks Jimmy for saving me a whole lot of money!
Thanks Jim, you saved me big bucks again. I don't mind paying a mechanic for major repairs but minor repairs that I can tackle save me enough money to pay for the bigger problems.
Hi Jim. I watched the video of the 2006 Sentra thermostat. I was having the same issue of no heat due too air pockets. So i did some investigation on my own behalf. I found there is a purge screw on top just just the thermostat housing. I took the screw out while I added the antifreeze. Added it till no burping. I found it because i was going to take off the whole base housing because i thought something was clogged. 10mill bolt with copper washer. Great video. Plus i had the heat on also.
I changed it out yesterday, and went to the VA Hospital today, about a 12 miles drive. Coming back, it started overheating, and got close to the max line so I pulled over, called a tow and took it home. Now, it seems to be driving fine after 4 or 5 miles going around the neighborhood. Is it possible my water pump is bad. The lower and top radiator hoses are hot almost equally, and the heat is blowing hot. Any suggestions?
The coolant was topped off, and some in the reservoir tank. I just drove 15 miles or so, and seems to be running fine. The only thing is today was open the radiator cap, to check the level. No leaks anywhere. The heat is working normal. I did notice the fans did come on now, but earlier when it did get hot, they didn't come on.
Superb video!!! Thank you. I’m having a cool lower hose on my 05 Sentra and am planning on doing this work soon. One question though, I always thought you had to bleed air from system by running it with open radiator cap (with funnel) Your method is easier, without having to open cap. Thank you again!!!!
I just changed my thermostat and afterwards the heater stopped blowing hot air inside the car..? Are they any chance related? Hope to hear from you soon! Thanks to your tutorial!
Hey Jim, I have a 2006nissan sentra wit about 74000miles and had to change my thermostat on my own. I did the proper cleaning and changes of the theromostat. I did not re-use any fallen liquid, or use new coolants to top off radiator cap in front of hood. My backup overflow is currentlybelow the max level. I let my car warm up multiple times pressing on gas slowly and slowly then blasting the heat on, it was cold hen turned warm and hot. Still has check engine light. I never drained the coolant plugged as you stated n the beginning. Should I top off with coolant and have autozone clear the code?
First of all, I am a real fan of your videos......but I am curious a little about this one......why did you remove the clamp and slide the hose off the thermostat housing.......seems to me that you could left it on to save time.
Did the procedure just as you show on my Nissan Sentra 2004 1.8 L and replaced with a Murray 44170 thermostat from Oreilly's auto. Now have only cold air coming out the registers and the top hose is hot but the bottom is not. Have bumped the accel as you show and no joy. Anything else to do? Am letting the car cool down before checking coolant level. Did fill to the top. Should I try to burp it with the cap off once cooled down? Thanks for your help.
Good video but Im wondering if my problem is thermostat or something else.. On my instrument panel the temperature gauge has started behaving erratically.. Immediately after starting the engine it will sometimes jump way up to HOT , when there's just no way it could be that hot. Then after a few minutes it will sometimes fall back to a normal level on it's own or after restarting the car... could this be a bad thermostat or something else?
Hey josh h! I am having the exact same problem! I have replaced the thermostat, the temperature sending unit, the hoses, and I have completely flushed the entire cooling system including the heater core. Nothing has fixed the problem. After I completely flushed the car yesterday, July 28, 2021, it ran at a normal temp for about 30 miles on a test drive. I thought I had it fixed, but the next time I started the car, same problem! My next step is to install an aftermarket temperature gauge. This is the one I’m gonna try. www.autometer.com/1-1-2-water-temp-100-280-f-elec.html I’ll let you know if it works!
@@Rhysandshuge-wingspan thanks for your reply douglas. After reading up on this more Im thinking it could be the instrument panel.. with a bad thermostat or temp sensor there are some other symptoms that will occur but I haven't seen any of them in my car.. And actually this thing with the temperature gauge isn't even one of them! I didn't know you could replace the temp gauge by itself , I thought all the gauges were in a single unit? Yes please Let me know if this works for you?
It could be the Engine Temperature Coolant sensor. On this car both the sensor and thermostat are cheap enough and the car is old (yes, even 5 years ago lol) so if you are getting code 0128 you should just change both.
Actually that is a great question. The air purge is mostly on the OEM thermostats and some of the high end ones. The air purge makes it easier to get the air out before the thermostat opens. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.
I have a 2004 Sentra 1.8s and am wondering what the differences might be from this video. Do I need to burp the system? The manual mentions a petcock or some switch that needs a counter clockwise turn but the drawing in the manual makes it hard to figure out where it is.
This seems really helpful. I'm hoping to change out my own thermostat. I have read when filling with antifreeze mixture it is helpful to get air out of the cooling system by running the car at an incline too... with nose of car uphill; is this is a helpful step or not necessarily so? Am I overthinking this process ha ha? Where does one dispose of used antifreeze liquids?
Well I did it after following your video, easy- peasey... however though I now thankfully have heat, the lower hose still feels colder than the top one after a warm up or drive. What am I missing here? Anyone know? The car seems to show normal temps on the gauge too...
Mr. Jim I have a code PO455 in my 2006 nissan sentra. Emission System Leak Detected (Gross leak / No FLow), will you happen to make a video for this please. Thank you. great video by the way.
Jim I have a 2006 Maxima with the same code. Is the thermostat that I would need to replace on the lower left hand side as I face the engine? Every part that I have looked up shows the entire housing, not just the thermostat. Would you recommend a total new housing and thermostat?
Here is the procedure.. If you can get just the thermostat just change it. REMOVAL 1.Remove engine undercover using power tool. 2.Drain coolant from radiator. CAUTION: Perform when engine is cool. 3.Remove drive belts. 4.Remove water drain plug on water pump side of the engine. 5.Disconnect lower radiator hose.
HI,i got a problem is the thermostat and radiator i have just change a month, after change everthing is ok,,after a month the problem is once i running up to 110km, the temperature is show over heat, what is actual problem i have to look carefully..?
Hey! I can vouch about the fragility of those bolts... just broke one.... the bottom one that you can’t see, no less. Have to research how to proceed at this point.
Can you just change the thermostat without draining it unhooking any hoses? Seems like my hose is pretty snug and I tried using pliers but it was not coming unstuck?
nato21live I recommend removing the hoses and draining the system before trying to replace the thermostat You will have less of a chance of crossing any bolts
The lower radiator hose is not supposed to be as hot as the upper hose because that would mean that the coolant being fed back into the engine is the same temperature as it was when it left the engine, indicating that the radiator did not do it's job of cooling the coolant down before it goes back into the engine. The lower hose should be warm or somewhat hot, but not blazing hot like the upper hose. 😉
After I changed thermostat, putting antifreeze, and let the car run for 15 min, the temperature between in and out pipes are still significantly different (not same). What could be the issue?
This thermostat has a rubber ring around it there is no gasket needed.Check the video at the 7:00 point to see it.I'm happy to help thank you for your feedback
1998 Nissan Sentra Gxe has no codes popping up and no dash lights however the temperature gauge will drop to cool at highway speed but will go back to normal at stop and go or regular driving….
The reason you SHOULD take the host off is because with the hose on, there is a chance you can cross-thread the bolts, especially when reinserting the bolts at the end of the job. Shortcuts can cause expensive problems...just take the damn hose off! lol ;)
I get this code every year the weather gets cold. I reset it and after driving 30-45 minutes it doesn't come back. It scans green.with a good bill of health
The gasket is on the thermostat. NO gasket needed on the housing of the thermostat. If you're thermostat didn't come with the gasket, you got ripped off.

Thank you so much this was done very good not talking too fast and very simple to understand thank you
Mr. Jimthecarguy, very nice detailed video. You just saved me a lot of time and frustration. Keep up the good work! :)

Great tutorial. I was stressed out about having to pay for mechanic expenses I didn't have. , but this is very helpful.
Thank you for watching and your input.

Was the antifreeze leaking or was it possible just low? Also does the cooling fan come on when it was hot?

Eric Wallace you have to reset your check engine light once the issue has been fixed. Google "reset check engine light Nissan Sentra"

Very Nice Video.. I have a question .. @jimthecarguy why do we need to take out some amount of Anti freeze in the beginning ?

How low of a Thermostat can you use before the light will come on. im seeing 170's for sale but reading the stock one is 185. will 170 trip the light?
Another question, could you not have kepe the hose and the housing together and unscrewed the housing?
Interested in why you say never use universal antifreeze? Have you had bad experiences or are you just trying to maintain the warranty?
excellent video. can you talk about the Air purge valve ? some thermostats dont have them. its seems like its an OEM thing. how important are they ?
Actually that is a great question. The air purge is mostly on the OEM thermostats and some of the high end ones. The air purge makes it easier to get the air out before the thermostat opens. Thank you for watching . Don't forget to subscribe.

No need to run the car on the incline just at normal idle will do.Most of the big auto parts stores will take the antifreeze for disposal.
The difference between the upper and lower hose are normal.

Hi Jim,
Do you not need to bleed the air from the hoses? Similar to when you do a break job? Thanks
If you just run the car until the car warms up and then just top off the antifreeze you will be OK.
Hey Jim, thanks for the info and the tips.
Thank you Wyatt

Sir what about the air pocket no need to bleed??
No just by running the car the air will purge .Thanks for watching.
what's a fair price for this if I were to take it to get done at a shop?
The labor charge should be 1 hour-1.5 hours plus parts.
No need to take the hose of the housing. Just undo the bolts

How many miles on this one Jim
I think this car had around 50,000
our 2005 Sentra 1.8 liter has 307,000. Drive it anywhere. I change the oil every 5,000 miles. great car and 33 mpg :)
no gasket there?
The gasket is on the thermostat. NO gasket needed on the housing of the thermostat. If you're thermostat didn't come with the gasket, you got ripped off.
Where is the thermostat in a 92 Sentra 1.6?
This can also cause your car to not want to start...
