I was attacked and my jaw and skull were fractured in 2001. I had my jaw wired as the surgeon in Zimbabwe didn't have the plates and screws used now days. Now fast forward 23 years I still have some wires in my jaw and skull. Since the attack I kept getting severe pain in my jaw towards the chin where the main break was. I had been to see countless doctors and was given antibiotics and pain killers. Eventually my GP recommended I go and see an oral surgeon. He briefly looked at my scan and said that it was nerve damage from the attack and that I have 3 choices. 1. Permanent epilepsy medications that apparently assist in nerve pain. 2. Nerve block. 3. Surgically remove the nerve. I looked at my options and decided to go for the nerve block as I didn't want Permanent medications and didn't want to have the nerve removed and have my face sag and have no feelings in my face and lips. Now the to my horror the doctor proceeded to push the needle into my jaw with 100% alcohol with no anesthetic!!!!!!!? Well I can't even begin to explain the burning pain I experienced. It was absolutely horrific. After this barbaric event I asked the doctor if that pain was normal and he basically said that I should stop feeling sorry for myself as there are people far worse than me. So moving on my nerve was now burnt and I couldn't feel half my face and jaw resulting I food and drink always running down my face. Now a few months later the nerve regenerated and the pain got so bad that whilst on holiday in Thailand I spent a whole week in bed. I was taking pain meds and epilepsy meds to try and manage the pain. I had enough as this was consuming my life. After the holiday I decided to fly to South africa and see a specialist there. I explained the whole story to him and after some scans he showed me there was nothing wrong with my nerve and that where I had the pain, there was infection in the bone and teeth. He recommended removing 4 teeth and expose the infected area and treat it. I immediately agreed. It was the best decision I ever made. After 23 years I am now pain free. I have had teeth implants done and I can now have a normal life. So my advice is make sure you see competent doctors.

I'm supposed to get nerve blocking (to the neck area) for acute pain stemming from osteonecrosis caused by radiation (for throat cancer). But, I'm glad I watched this 'cuz, the nerve block injections are scheduled for tomorrow and right now, I'm on antibiotics for a recurring jaw infection. Nobody mentioned to me that it's, probably not a good idea to do it while I'm fighting an infection. Thanks guys, I'm rescheduling.
I had a nerve block last week, my pain is 95 % pain free but i feel tired and i feel all the symptoms of the pain without the pain, it is difficult to explain it
I have been recommended for a block at the screw that was put into by SI joint during fusion surgery. Have had constant paint since surgery six months ago with constant narcotics.
I've had 2 nerve blocks in my lower lumbar for bulging disc and pinched nerves . The first nerve block lasted around 10 days and the pain returned slowly , it was rather expensive so I didn't do another for a few years . I just had another one done yesterday on the same thing and it helped , but not as well as the first time . I'm not looking for it to last , so I probably won't have it done again , just because of how expensive it is , and it kinda hurts . I'll just continue with the ibuprofen 800mg twice a day and deal with the rest . I've tried physical therapy , chiropractic care and neither worked for me , guess I'll just have to deal with pain till I die
I am in the same boat with my neck, I had PT, shots, blockers, and burning of the nerves. I had relief for a short time and the pain came back worse then before so now I just deal with it by putting heat, ice, creams, ibuprofen and soft range of motion exercises.
I had surgery yesterday to repair my fibula, they gave me a nerve block for lower leg. Personally I remember being told it would last 10\12 hours, so I was expecting to feel something in my leg by end of day. Surgery was at 7:30 am Thursday morning by 5:30 pm I was expecting to feel something but everything was still completely numb below the knee. Couldn't move my toes,couldn't feel my toes or skin below the knee. Even nothing at 3:30 am almost 24 hours later, was scared and couldn't sleep. Finally fell asleep at 4:30 and woke up at 7:30, now 24 hours postop. Finally starting to feel tingling in my toes, a few area on my leg I can feel tingling, feel tingling on the back of my toes, but can't move them. I think I would not elect to do this again, I prefer to feel my leg and foot and take pain meds instead of worry if I'm going to get my leg back.
I got an spinal epidural for low back pain and it was very painful and it quickly paralyzed my right leg and foot . I lost all skin sensation and I couldn't move my leg , foot and toes . Doctor put me in a wheelchair and put me in a room . The doctor kept telling me the feeling will come back in an hour , over, over and the feeling didn't come back , so he admitted me to the hospital and I was terrified my leg was permanently paralyzed. I stayed overnight and 30 hours after the injection I finally got the feeling back in my leg , but I was still in severe pain !! So, my primary doctor ordered a MRI to see if there's any changes and found numerous medium to large size Tarlov cysts all over both sides of my sacrum area that can cause pain and have numerous other negative side effects. Those cysts were not on my last MRI , one week prior . I believe all my Tarlov cysts were formed from my botched spinal epidural that accidentally injected into my spinal column that caused me extreme pain when it paralyzed my right leg for 30 hours and blew out my spinal cord at the bottom and formed all my tarlov cysts because it didn't have anywhere else to expand except at the bottom of my spinal cord because Inside Tarlov cysts contains SPINAL FLUID, NERVE endings and nerve fibers. Nerve fibers can be within the wall of the cyst . The cysts are an extension of my spinal cord !! I think the cysts were caused from the botched lower lumbar epidural. The meds accidentally went into my spinal cord and didn't have anywhere else to go , but to expand out at the end of my spinal cord and formed all my Tarlov cysts in my sacrum area. They all contain spinal fluid and nerve endings , so it has to be an extension of my spinal cord .No wonder I was in extreme pain . . Cyst size can go up and down in size when my spinal fluid pressure changes depending on my activity .They're painful because there's pressure on the nerves endings inside the cyst . There's only a few doctors in the country that will do surgery on them for obvious reasons ; it's filled with nerves and spinal fluid. So, it's something else painful I'll have to deal with for life because of an easy quick "SAFE" spinal epidural. I've recently learned that spinal injections are not FDA approved because they're too dangerous, but doctors have been doing them for decades . They also speed up bone loss , so they'll have a pain patient for life . Numberous epidurals gave me severe osteoporosis and now my bone is to weak to hold screws for a double fusion I need and it's caused a vertebrae compression fracture from doing nothing and I could get more. . All the spinal epidurals I've had never helped my pain . Doctors are focused on putting off spine surgery to correct the problem ; like moderate bilateral (both sides of the spine) stenosis/pinched nerve and are more concerned with destroying the nerve , so your brain won't feel the pain signal , but the nerve is still pinched and continues to get damaged more and more until the nerve is permanently damaged and in the lower back you start to lose important functions like bladder , bowl and leg control, but if the numerous spinal epidurals work for you, you won't feel the pain. That's like driving your car and the "Check Engine Soon" warning light comes on and flashing trying to warn you something major is happening and you pull over , open the hood and pull out the wire to make the "Check Engine Soon" light to stop flashing and go away and you get back in your car and keep driving it and ignore the warning light came on. Something is still wrong and going to break down soon !! But, that's how doctors are treating patients that obviously need surgery. Me being one of them. C'mon that's common sense. Your body pain signals for a reason , it's to alert you that something is wrong , you're injured and need attention. Those nerves that send pain signals are so important ; if the doctor destroys them , your body will keep making new ones and another irony is the newer nerves are more and more sensitive to pain !! So, you'll be a lifetime patient. Over the years from experience and a lot of reading I've lost a lot of faith in doctors . I've also noticed a lot of spinal doctors on RUclips seem to be pushing an agenda and it's a very painful one and it's very obvious to those with some common sense . Focused on fixing the problem while you still can .
yes, a nerve block has been recommended for the pain in my shoulder. I had a cortisone injection in the shoulder that only lasted about a week. I've been through physical therapy without much benefit. i've had 3 strokes and can walk with a cane but but this reallyintensifies the shoulder pain' They also found a small tear in my rotator cuff but it was so small surgery was not recommended at this time. I need more practise with the cane but the pain has really held me back. I'm hoping the nerve block can buy me some time using the cane so I can be more mobile. I know a nerve block only lasts a short while but any pain relief is qelcomed. I do not use any pain meds beside tylenol.

I was supposed to do the medial branch lumbar facet joint but they wanted to do eight injections at once I would have been asleep but I worried about the amount of injections and the pain I might of had after so I proposed the procedure
I just had a cervical C4 C6 nerve block today in my doctor'soffice. I felt like a bobblehead, my husband had to help me anytime I had to move due to the fact that I feel like I may fall forward. As of now it's only been 2 hours so we'll see how it goes from here. 🤷🏽♀️
Are nerve blocks the same as epidural anti inflammatory? Ive been told as a 31 year old to get a tens unit surgically instilled in my spine. Does phantom pain persist with the nerve ending being burned off?
Thanks so much for the comment. Nerve blocks and epidurals are definitely different and there are many different types of nerve blocks. When you talk about nerve endings being "burned off" it sounds like you are referring to a rhizotomy which burns or cuts select nerves in the hopes of reducing pain signal delivery to the brain. People can respond very differently to these procedures. Some find if brings relief while others continue to have similar or increased pain symptoms. Pain is so complex that it is difficult to know if doing nerve procedures like this will have the desired outcome.
Heck L5 pain on Gabapentin not helping should I slowly reduce ,having nerve block in two weeks ,fingers crossed the pain is getting me down ,thank you for your advice

Recommended to have a nerve block had surgery to fix Laceration to the back of my hand and Extender tendon. Repair Had severe pain before the surgery and now after 5 months latter it's worse they have tried All the Neurological meds that just i can't take that stuff horrible side effects
I've had both knee and shoulder nerve blocks several times. Do you have to have sedation before being given a nerve block. I was told it was for anxiety and I don't need it; I've never been anxious before any of my 14 surgeries. I want to know if the sedation is a medical medical necessity.
Does a nerve block work for muscle injury? I don't have nerve damage, I have lower, mid back muscle damage from head-on car impact. 3.5 years later it still hurts to carry a bag of groceries. I'm a scuba diver and I've always been active. I'm tired of hurting. Any suggestions? Thanks. 😊

What damage can it do after. I have CRPS & even a needle can spread it. Not many in the medical world know about CRPS & yet it's the most painful condition known to man. As serious as cancer.
I guess there are varying short and long term symptoms that can arise from this. Unfortunately hard to say for certain though. You are also correct that there isn't enough awareness of CRPS

It always depends on exactly what is going on in your specific case and the plan to get your body to be able to naturally regulate symptoms without the need for continual nerve blocks or injections!

I had s nerve block my ladt knee replacement in Dec l was sent home with s nerve block. To me there are a god send snd should be longer the first two weeks after replacing kneea two weeks block would make recovery less painful and quicker.

Sedation is optional. I have received two of these procedures without sedation.

@@docjenfit in 3.5 years nobody has found a root cause other than I have scoliosis. My back didn't hurt at all before I had a head-on car accident. It seems to be just the lower back muscles. So will a nerve block work on muscles?
Never had one , said no to them. 2 kids natural childbirth no epidural. Resent open heart surgery, said no to nerve block.

What damage can it do after. I have CRPS & even a needle can spread it.
Not many in the medical world know about CRPS & yet it's the most painful condition known to man. As serious as cancer.
I guess there are varying short and long term symptoms that can arise from this. Unfortunately hard to say for certain though. You are also correct that there isn't enough awareness of CRPS

Often times they’re used for a temporary relief.
Yeah about 3 weeks ago for DDD with right side and left side stenosis worse on the right so injection on the right lumbar lower back it seems to be working well

Yes for my Sciatica but I am interested in finding out if it will block other problems that can harm me. I have been advised for 1 injection each week for 8 weeks.
It always depends on exactly what is going on in your specific case and the plan to get your body to be able to naturally regulate symptoms without the need for continual nerve blocks or injections!

Glute area? That's what I got told to do for sciatica, and if that doesn't work then I will try the root block....
My doctor told that he had given nerve block after surgery how many days I feel painless??
It really depends on the type of block and amount of medication.
Some people they help. Dr has to, make those airplane payments on time !

I had s nerve block my ladt knee replacement in Dec l was sent home with s nerve block. To me there are a god send snd should be longer the first two weeks after replacing kneea two weeks block would make recovery less painful and quicker.
