    I love how you refer to 1200-1800 horsepower as mild. That's just Awesome. You guys really are be-awesome (Bolt). Thank God you all walked away. My Dad used to run super-stock and it was something like this that got him out of racing. Had a front tire that was getting dodgy but thought he could push it through one more race, lack of funds for him lack of time for you. He had just finished building the car and the engine and after setting a lap record on his qualifying he lost that tire and totaled the car.

    You tested the sh!t out of those parts!! It's amazing how much pressure and power is really happening inside of these diesel engines and they hold it just fine. Like you said nothing would have held or survived the pass u did there and it was far beyond normal operating parameters but it's still crazy how much these things can take and still go. Most importantly you and everyone else came back in one piece!!

      PowerDrivenDiesel kinda we had our fair share of broken blocks, cranks and bearing problems. Our biggest problem is we aren't allowed to use different castings. So block, head and crank are the weakest points. Still we push about 2500hp from a 510ci International with a single 4.8" hypermax Turbo.

    For the record, at 8500 rpm a stock 6.7 cummins 4.88 in stroke means the average piston speed is about almost 7000 fpm, about half again higher then a Formula 1 engine at 18,000rpm (round 4800 fpm). Considering the piston in a cummins probably weighs several times what one does in an F1 engine the forces that engine was subject to before she died would have been incredible.

    Make sure the close off valve is hand-pressure operated and not spring operated, and that the hand pressure can overcome the manifold pressure at the errant boost pressures in question. It doesn't need to kill the engine completely - it just needs to severely cripple it until it uses all the fuel in the line after the fuel cutoff. It is possible just a manifold boost pressure dump would be adequate.

    • @SteveWrightNZ
      @SteveWrightNZ 6 лет назад

      Yes indeed. It may be safer to just dump (most of) the boost pressure - at least this can be done reliably. I'm sure a hung rack with little or no boost would be a non-event. Even a stick of gelignite taped to the turbocharger would be safer that what happened to you.. :) Thanks for the really great post mortem, that's pretty cool. Glad you were ok.

    I blew up a Chevy smallblock one time, #7 rod bearing spun, cap blew off and out thru the oil pan, rod caught in the cylinder wall, crank hit rod, rod came out thru the side of the block, boom. No fire, just a boom, and a big boof of smoke, and everything seized up. I pushed the clutch in and coasted a few feet, let it back out and left some more rubber on the road, pushed it back in and coasted onto the shoulder. It wasn't pretty, but it could've been worse. I spun a main bearing in a Buick V6 one time. I had a camshaft snap clean in half on a Ford V10. I never blew up a diesel.

    Todd, have you ever considered building a 2 cycle Detroit Diesel?..... like the 6V53 (318 ci). Also, I've never seen or heard of anyone build a Cat diesel for the drags (in a pickup or "rail"..... but, possibly because the Cats internal mass is generally heavier than a Cummins of like displacement. I would really like to see someone build a 2 cycle Detroit for the drags. The White Lightening RED (Rear Engine Dragster) that John Carey was running back in the late 1970's was running 7.20's way back then, and it was De-stroked from 318ci down to 270ci and was putting 1,000hp to the ground, Before he "put it on the bottle"!!.... also had a near perfectly "clean" exhaust as well!
    The only reason he quit campaigning it was because it was breaking too many drive-line parts, more so than his Two Top Fuelers were that he was also running.... and it was running all top fuel parts in the driveline. John told me that when the turbos would fully spool up when he "hit the bottle" about 40/50ft out of the hole, that the power (torque) would come "on" so fast and hard "that it was like getting rammed from behind with a huge hydraulic ram, and it would snap drive-line parts like pretzels"!! so, parked it and just ran his two fuelers.
    As far as I know (at least, he did just a few years ago), he still has the White Lightning (complete, just as he parked it)... it's sitting up on the 2nd stage of one of his big storage shelves in one of his shops with about an 1" of dust on it... he builds marine diesels on the east coast, has one shop in Maryland and one in Delaware.
    PS: He never blew the engine up in the nearly 4 seasons that he ran it.... just Lots of drive-line breakage, of course with "today's" metallurgy, that would probably no longer be an issue with his 2 cycle dragster.

    Go get it boys. This is inspirational to every diesel owner who has a failure and feels like they're in the gutter spitting out teeth, rods, and blood. Go show em it ain't shit and you'll be back and better than ever!
