My favorite magician. I love his performances but I think I love how he comes alive through the pages when I read his books even more. I laugh out loud like a madman with a book in my hands at the funny parts and read with my mouth hanging open as his cleverness blows me away. Then I go watch The Office on a loop lol. Excellent interview Jeff and David!
David is the real deal. What you see is who you get. A real portal of ideas who is willing to share his creations so that others may possibly learn and succeed with them.
Thoroughly enjoyed the conversation, Mr Regal is Magic Royalty, great creator, great performer, great thinker. Consistently makes me feel less miserable. Thanks for sharing. Respect.
Absolutely loved this interview! I am a huge David Regal fan and to spend this time hearing him in this intimate setting was a treasure. I could relate to so much about his about finding magic as a kid. I spent hours with magic catalogs and, believe it or not, I also had the cigarette catcher! (And probably still have it). Great interview. Well done Jeff!
One thing I loved was, when David worked with L & L. He would perform his whole set in one take. This really elevated what I was able to learn beyond the traditional format of "Do a trick, then teach the trick." Inherent in the performance you learned how he would switch things in and out and how he transitioned between effects. Because David performed uncut sets, you could learn things much more valuable than just learning a series of unrelated effects. Learning a bunch of unrelated tricks often left me with many unanswered questions.
What a wonderful interview. You and David were on the same page and lots of fun information. It’s fun to hear how the great started. Thank you for putting this interview together Jeff.
That was absolutely awesome.Mr Regal was hilarious and had some insightful and illuminating thoughts and experiences to share. For me the material I most enjoyed in his books are his card stuff.I found that you had to concentrate on what he was saying and follow the instructions very carefully to get the final effect and the method was usually quite daring/gutsy.Quality card tricks are the final result.Nice guy and fabulous interview.Great work Jeff.👏👏👏👏 (Constant fooling 1&2 and Approaching Magic are the books I have by Mr Regal, great books!)
What an awesome video. I procured Approaching Magic and Constant Fooling 1 because of your review. I am loving them. I decided to work through CF first, because of it's relatively smaller size. Unfortunately it will take a month or 2 before I can get through Approaching Magic. So I won't be able to comment on my favorite tricks now. I also took a look at David's RUclips videos, especially the Magic Castle performances. They are really good. He instantly became one of my favorite performers.
Regal had a limerick contest on the magic cafe years ago (2009). I entered with two different limericks. Sadly, he eliminated all limericks that were about him, so I had no chance of winning. :( But to answer your question about (one of) my favorite Regal trick. Here is my limerick: There's a trick: to all magicians it calls one to master to enter magic fame's halls Of the many I could see Not one worked for me Until the "Cups and Balls and Cups and Balls" A second entry I made: There once was a magi named Regal Who felt animal abuse was still legal With his chop-mouse named Herman, The Cheese-Chasing Vermin And his Ambitious Card disguised as a beagle.
Fantastic interview. Thanks, Jeff. David Regal is a huge inspiration. I love his books and other writing. I truly enjoyed his insight, wit, and thought process in this entertaining interview.
My new intro to every David Regal trick I perform: The gentleman who created this trick, God rest his soul, made it his life’s work to, in his words, “make people’s lives just a little less miserable.” With that in mind, let’s see if we can make your day, today, just a little less miserable.
