Boxer Jack Jefferson (James Earl Jones) is the world's reigning heavyweight boxing champion. There's just one problem, he is also the first black heavyweight champion, and that bothers a lot of people. Jack's celebration is cut short, as Jack is framed for crossing a state line with Eleanor, his white fiancé (Jane Alexander in her first film role), a violation of the Mann Act. Facing a prison sentence, Jack escapes to Europe, with Eleanor in tow, encountering problems in England, and then France, and eventually landing in Cuba. In Havana, Jack agrees to enter the boxing ring for what might be the bout of his life. Both Jones and Alexander were nominated for Oscars. *******************************************************************************************************

0:27 OOOHHH that was SAVAAAAAGE!!!!
What the fuck did I just watch?
+RBGUERILLA The Great White Hope. Its a great movie. A true life story about about a bad ass boxer named Jack Johnson. Whom dated white women during a time when interracial dating was unthinkable. He became the heavy weight in 1908. Reason why its called Great White Hope was because he was unbeatable. So the white press tried to pay him to throw a fight intentionally so a white man could claim victory. And he did. He is also the first owner of the cotton club, a club that would eventually be a corner stone to american jazz during the jazz era. So all that bullshit you watched is actually true and they should probably make the movie again.
a film adaptation of an extremely successful broadway play. james earl jones played jack johnson on the stage version as well.
He was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for this performance (he lost to George C. Scott for "Patton").
JamEarl Jones was great in this movie He also played a role In the movie Claudine with Diane Carroll.

@@hernehaugen6878 who'd have known Vader was trans race before he went full trans sith/machine. He literally and metaphorically went to the dark side.
darth vader could have been black to leave a great impact
R.I.P., James Earl Jones. His role in "The Great White Hope" was one of the most profoundly moving performances I've ever seen...
"I'm from the jungle like you baby and I hear the drums." Fuckin icing
Its still crazy seeing this. Until.... year ago or so, I've NEVER seen James Earl Jones in his prime. Growing up, he looked the same to me for 29 years, the same wise, old black man.
Specifically, the way he looked in The Sandlot(I was born in '94, but still), that's what I recognized him as all my life.
And this man sparred with Muhammad Ali, for this movie in fact. Dude doesnt even need The Force, he IS the Force.
I fell in love with James Earl Jones in this movie. He is one terrific actor. 🌸💖
Me too
“Give me another chance baby, I misses you awful...”...lord have mercy
R.I.P. James Earl Jones (1931 - 2024)!
Young James Earl Jones VOICE 😀😃🤩💛💛……..WOOHOO 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Marlene Warfield also had a memorable role in "Network" as revolutionary Laureen "Don't f*ck with my distribution costs!!" Hobbs; great and underrated actress.
Powerfull is a better adjective.

For the people that don’t know, that’s James Earl Jones for portraying to be the great jack Johnson. I wonder why they changed the name to jack Jefferson smh
Also Jack Johnson didn’t lose that fight either.
Jack Johnson one of the best

Hi , my name is Eric Ryder. I just saw this movie it was a great film. I grade it an 8/10. I really liked the story and the acting from all the cast members give it their all. Even the sporadic boxing scenes with the old-school rules and the archaic gloves were truly authentic. I tried to look for it at my video store but no such luck. I am glad it's on You Tube and I hope it stays. there. The main weaknesses in this film was that the story was too thin for a powerful performer like James Earl Jones. He clearly upstages everyone leaving the rest of the cast underdeveloped. Even Jack Jefferson himself was underdeveloped. Also I found it overdid its message on political racism. I really wanted to see more boxing matches. I know it was based on a play, but there was way too much dialogue and not enough action. I was a bit letdown in that area. But those are the only minor quibbles I had with this movie. Anyone interested in my review come to "Eric Ryder's channel. I have a review on "The Great White Hope". I like to know what you think. Okay? Thank you very much.
Yo Willie in jail you just smelling gravy! 🤣🤣

marlene warfield is padme
She rips threw every scene. Amazing actress.
why is this film considered a blaxploitation film?
sofia Easy,Afro American actor & actress, put their stories on the Screen to Exposure, their Stories.
It isn't. It's considered a great drama.
Good question. This was made when so called black exploitation was prevalent.Granted it was produced in that era,but is it exploitation or exposure by any means.Exploitation carries a implication of caricature and mimicry.
I don't know why it would be, the story is supposed to be based of the life of the great Jack Johnson.
Because it was made in 1970. The whole decade 1970s was a "blaxploitation" era of film where all movies with majority black cast fell under that umbrella. Jive movies (Cofee), pimp movies (Shaft, Superfly) , action, martial art etc etc.... In reality this movie was a "Biopic" on the late life of Jack Johnson - the great early 19th century heavyweight!
This whole movie is a means to supporting eugenics.
James Earl Jones was a buffoon. He lacked the inherent dignity to play Jack Johnson.
