  • HAWAIʻI ISLAND - The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports the leading edge of the flow closest to Daniel K. Inouye Highway, aka Saddle Road, has had minimal movement and remains near the 7,000 foot elevation and more than 3 miles from the highway. A new plan for motorists driving up to see the eruption was also announced on Thursday.

    I commend the county for trying to find solutions for the heavy traffic of curious people. I know they can be a problem for traffic flow, but this is a very unique event for a lot of people to witness and the county seems accommodating to that. A great example of the government working for the people while still keeping things safe.

      Trying to get in lava's way doesn't really work. It doesn't care about trenches or tunnels; it just fills them and rolls over the top. It's a lot like a slow-motion runaway train; the bit at the front has no control over the force of the flow at the back, driving the whole thing forward. When you put barriers in-front of it, it just climbs over and buries them. You can build on top of lava, once it's cooled enough to be safe, but it's very difficult to redirect its path effectively. It goes where it wants to, and few forces in the world can bring it to a stop meaningfully.

    Anybody think sea level issue is causing these volcanoes to go eruption?

    • @hydroknight01
      @hydroknight01 Год назад

      Not how it works. Eruptions are caused by pressure in the mantle, magma forcing its way up through weakpoints in the crust to form hotspots, like the one that the Hawaiian island chain is formed over. Seal levels have nothing to do with causing eruptions at all - though seawater interacting with superheated rock does cause phreatic eruptions, a kind of explosion caused by the water instantly flashing to steam. Good video describing the current Mauna Loa eruption can be found here, posted 3 days ago, shortly after the initial eruption; he's posted a couple more on Mauna Loa since then:

      Liquids don't care about trenches. Dig a trench in-front of a tsunami, and the sea will inevitably fill it, then keep rolling right over the top. Dig a trench in front of lava, and the lava will fill it then keep on rolling, just like the sea. You'd spend time and money paying people to take a few days digging a trench, only for the lava to be stalled by a few hours at most. Hawai'i is not Iceland; the island's topography and situation on the ground is not the same as it was in Geldingadalir.

      @hydroknight01 Год назад +4

      @@charliec2622 I'm very calm, thanks. Just stating the facts. Hawai'i is a collection of shield volcanos, formed from a hotspot in the Earth's mantle, and they usually only produce lava flows like this one Mauna Loa is producing now, and the ones produced during Kilauea's last eruption; another example would be the eruption of Geldingadalir in Iceland earlier this year. But shield volcanos cannot produce pyroclastic flows; these are formed from clouds of the hot gas and ash usually produced during an explosive eruption, and driven by gravity, rushing down the steep sides of a stratovolcano like Mt. St. Helens, or Mt. Vesuvius (hence, the destruction and burial of Pompeii). Volcanology is a really fascinating subject, and anyone can learn even the basics very easily, today; I would encourage you, and anyone else, to have a look. :)
