Can you please include maps that include a larger picture of where the lava is likely to cross 200 (Saddle Rd)? All of the maps I can find are close ups, and do nothing to help visitors who are not familiar with the island. I'm trying to explain to family and friends what is happening, but they need a map to see that the northwest side of the island isn't about to be destroyed by lava.
You are the best for updates!

In my mind this can hardly be construed as a natural disaster because so far the impact on human habitation and infrastructure is minimal. The lava flow may not progress far beyond the saddle area thus its impact could continue to be minimal. The eruption of Kilauea in 2018 or La Palma last year were more of a natural disaster given the residential area that was destroyed.

@@laniedwards449 It's been nearly 40 years since Mauna Loa last erupted, and records of her eruptions go back hundreds of years. There is enough data there to do some financial planning about the risks and expenses involved. It wouldn't be a big deal for Hawaii to start up a fund that they put a small amount of tax revenue in each year so that the money is there when it's needed. As it is, the Hawaiian volcanoes are tourist attractions, and the state probably gets a good amount of money from people coming to see them.

Since it's obvious you have no context, I'll correct your statement. One major highway connecting the two biggest population centers of a county bigger than the state of Connecticut is potentially going to be cut off. A large portion of the population depends on the highway for commuting from the affordable side of the county, where they live, to the unaffordable side of the county, where the jobs are. Additionally, many essential goods, including food, are transported on this highway. Losing the highway will be a devastating blow to the residents of this county/island. It's not inappropriate to ask for help from the government that we pay taxes to, especially considering tourism and transplants from the mainland US are a major driver of the overinflated home values on the western side of the island. Not to mention the US illegally annexed Hawaii. So instead of "how about noooo," I say "how about put up or shut up."
