0:37 in this part of the video, he completely forgets to draw some parts on each of the frames in the rough sketch, and forget to draw small elements on the smooth sketch, and even completely leaves out an entire frame on the rough sketch and that is such a mood because I’ve done the *exact, same, thing* before
WHOA, YOU IMPROVE REALLY FAST! I really wish I had all the time in the world to draw and animate but oh well I'm still young. But seriously though, When I last saw your mini sword animation I thought it would take you longer to reach this level. You're seriously inspiring bro.
That was amazing. I’ve watched a lot of courses from what seems like every animation guru, and this by far is the best tutorial of a walk cycle I’ve ever seen. It explains the steps in a way where I can actually do this.
Great job, James. I can personally say there's not much out there on RUclips detailing the specifics like this, outside of Toniko's channel. Your teaching style will really help fill that void
I just discovered this channel, and I am shocked that I have never found it before! It has so much content on animation and digital art that I haven't been able to find on RUclips, and it has already helped me to improve! Thank you, and I can not wait until you release your next video!
as always, really good video, i learn so much from just watching this and copying the steps shown to understand how it really works. excited for more :D .
castlevania introducing pass poses in walkcycles since ancient time and basically overdoing it so that sprites look slightly as if skating on ice or rollerblading
One day I hope to look back on this video to help me create my vision of animation. But for know I have a lot more learning to do. Thank you for your efforts of teaching animation in a way that is easy to digest!
I find it interesting that in your photo example for the downpose it's actually higher than the contact. I don't imagine that was intentional but I wish you touched on that since the "down" in down pose really does just mean lowest point so it could even be after the passing position if you so choose
you didn't showed the in between , how you added the hand with the other parts , i mean we got the idea of the hand swing but how it will be with other parts :)
@@moderndayjames Yeah my reasons for watching this is twofold. I am thinking about trying Animation, and there's a game (more like creative software) on the Playstation called "Dreams" where you could create games, art, music, videos and more. There is a game idea I've had circulating in my mind. And since I would be making my own 3D models and animation (unless I team up with someone who are better experienced with it).
@moderndayjames whats the process for the face ? Do yu make a separete layer ? I tried to re draw the face for every frame and they are totally different.
Traditionally animators would use a technique called "tap wari" which was tracing the face from the previous drawing. With digital you can just copy paste the face and change only moving elements like hair!
@@moderndayjames ok but ... (i use photoshop) when i copy the lasso selection of the head to paste in the following frame it doesnt do it. Photoshop creates a layer without asking me with the lasso head selected . I dont understand why.. Basically i cant paste what i want in the frames i have it always creates a new layer when i pastes something... Anyway, Really than you (sorry for my english)
This is really good. You gave me motivation. Until I got art block and forgot how to draw the eyes. EDIT: and the legs. >:(. I'm still working at it though..but I saved this for later because this will really help. Thank's again.
Essh kind of weird how the fur on his shoulders is floating up when he is driving with his left leg. Should be two points in the walk cycle that you get that effect: right when each swinging leg reaches the top of the step and about to make contact with the ground. Not to mention the stiffness of the stroll. Really appreciate the perspective tutorials but I think your animation stuff needs more work before you go teaching stuff in Animators Survival Kit
Young Brother, your knowledge of the truman lodge is GI and sound like you've put miles in (by the way did you get that from one of my favorite moves? EuGene Barton & Willy Brown?) and your art, at least the figures I have seen in some of your vid'z are inspinering to an old dog like myself! My question to you my Censa is I have a pic and do not know where the vanishing points are or how many there should be? Could I send you the pic? The picture Is of two lions.
@@moderndayjames thats not true I think its very helpful tutorial and it is inspiring me to do my own.. but for now i just dream about making something like this
That was really good and almost got me excited to animate something and then I remembered that I can't draw.
can always start 😌
Use stick nodes or pivot animator
@@VURSESTHEWRLD nah
Just draw stick figures in FlipaClip
I’m sure you can! Just start small and work your way up
This is so far the most informative video on animation I’ve seen on youtube, thank you!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad it could help
Finally after walking so long during the lovestreams these characters can finally rest

tell me how i paid for 4 years of art school and this is the best breakdown & explanation of walk cycles i've ever seen
aw thanks! sorry your art school experience wasn't great

This was exactly the video I was waiting for after watching all your animation streams. This is super helpful. Thank you!

Thank you so much! It's really hard to find to find walk cycle tutorials for animators with more realistic animation styles that aren't anime.
great video! what a great idea to have the finished walk cycle playing while you talk about the process!
Bro your so good at teaching that i only watcjed 15 secs and now my characters can walk!!😭🤩
im trying to find a really detailed tutorial for walk cycles, and thanks to this! my prof didnt even teach us anything we just jumped to animating TT
thank you for being the only person to show more than one angle! every single video is the same side view cycle 💀💀
The goal with my channel is going to be talking about animation in perspective! So there will be lot's more to come
as always, really good video, i learn so much from just watching this and copying the steps shown to understand how it really works.
excited for more :D .
Thank you for doing a walking forward walk cycle. There isn't a single unity tutorial on walking forward. This will help me a lot.
after reading the book animator's survival kit walk cycles are fun to animate but they sure take a lot work.
Thank you for doing these videos, james!
Thanks so much for the video! Getting animation videos from you is great!
great video man! very informative and clear!
castlevania introducing pass poses in walkcycles since ancient time and basically overdoing it so that sprites look slightly as if skating on ice or rollerblading
I've experimented a lot with removing frames (especially in run cycles) and that tends to fix a lot of the sliding effect
@@moderndayjames why would I? I love that sliding
One day I hope to look back on this video to help me create my vision of animation. But for know I have a lot more learning to do. Thank you for your efforts of teaching animation in a way that is easy to digest!
2s gives a cool style that i like more than smooth framerate animations
What program of animation you use??
This is INVALUABLE!!! Thank you so much!!!!
mr james this was very helpful im very thankful for you sharing this ur guides are so good!

that was a mistake in the editing !
Dawg had me gone on "16"
Thank you James
Bro where have u been all my life??
More short informative videos about animation like these please! ♥ thank you for it!
ive got some filmed already, just gotta get to narrating them
Круто вышло. Пожалуйста, больше таких видео. 🙏🙏🙏
James is such a pog person
What program do u use?
you are good at animatng, damn i learnt alot
Thanks homie.
in the course that contains this walking cycle will have a step by step on how to do it in real time?
you didn't showed the in between , how you added the hand with the other parts , i mean we got the idea of the hand swing but how it will be with other parts :)
I love animation! Thank you for this tutorial
Hey! Very cool video! I also wanted to ask if there is a way to become a member of your channel to be able to see the members only videos? Thank you
That’s really good and amazing 🎉
Thank you for sharing this! Do you have a full course on 2D animation??
maaaan. more of that pleaaaaase.
I missed the live on Monday because I thought you were going to upload it 🙆
Are you using a character from the Avatar series here?
I think this may be applicable to 3D model animation as well.
yes it should definitely apply to both!

Which software was used for animation making, Please ?
I can't do this right now, I don't have the skills but I'll rematch it a lot.
also, is this guy from the legend of korra?
this is really helpful thank you !!
Can you also make video about hair overlapping?

Hair swing ❤
This is so cool
Great stuff🖊📐👍
I wouldn't make my characters duck walk though, but nonetheless great tutorial!
Can you make one for skeletal animation?
very good tips!!!!
I'll apply it to my animations
I NEED THIS
I can’t wait
Do you have a drawing of this with a back view?
I am going to try this and tag u❤️
That is great. thank you.
Yeah but James, where did you find such good references??
The walk movement was done without reference, the character design was a turnaround from Legend of Korra
@@moderndayjames Oh I meant the walk cycle references posted in the video. Those are handy.
@@tripplejaz it is from the book called the animators survival guide by ric
