I use old sofa cushions, rip foam out of them,
    I’ve bought foam last time, 120mm thick , 3ft x 3ft cost about £65 each.
You can use them on slate, handmade tiles, all profile tiles & don’t slide off .
    Great for tile repairs👍👍

As an old school slater i can't remember ever having the luxury of picking a dry day to work, especially in Scotland 😂. Some of the shit we had to do like brushing off snow in order to work woulda had health & safety having seizures. Any kids thinking about being slaters...dont! Trust me 😬

I use to weigh 99kg and break tiles alot.
I purposely lost weight down to 76kg in six months , now rarely break tiles now.
( My new line of work involved walking on roofs, that's why I had to loose weight)
I know this comment is boring 😂

An excellent confidence builder! The only comment I would make is the less weight you have on your feet by crabbing, the more chance there is of sliding off the roof, if you stay more upright then you will not slide.

When you're up on a roof and are an amateur, you tend to crab-walk like that anyway out of necessity and safety fears. Good advice about getting the rafters under you though for maximum support. The timbers of the roof I've been on are 180 years old, remarkably. The battens are probably a lot younger.

Thanks for doing this. I have a roof very similar to this that I will be cleaning soon, and I'm trying to figure out how I can minimize contact or not walk on the roof at all. Apparently, the terracotta tiles the home owner has are very expensive and I am not trained to replace them. I'm going to be using sodium hypochlorite to clean the tiles and do a heavy rinse. I noticed the roof you are on has a lot of the same Gloeocapsa magma or lichen. Any thoughts on cleaning them? Some people shy away from it but I believe, if done quickly and the cleaners are washed off properly, there is no need to worry.

    Are you a roofer?
You shouldn’t walk on plain tile roofs,or slate roofs. You CAN walk on big concrete tiles.
As a roofer I always use ladders, if you can’t use a roof ladder then use a normal ladder sat on foam to protect the tiles/slates.
Strap\tie the upright ladder so it’s safe, then tie the ladder that’s up the roof to the upright!
Or if able to use a roof ladder this will support itself safely with the hook over the ridge line
