    Rick, you should try and get Phil Buckle on to round this out? I know Matt from the Guitar Speak podcast did an interview a few years ago with him and it was great (I listened to it three times), really great to hear his history and funny how it all fits into the related stories of Brett Garsed, Jack Jones.

      Cool, I'll try reaching out to him. Thanks for the suggestion :)

      Oh and while on the subject of Southern sons, I would love to listen to a conversation with Peter “Reggie” Bowman if you get the chance, that would be awesome...
      I heard Phil Buckle on the guitar speaks podcast and it was fantastic so a chat with him would also be amazing - big thumbs up 👍 to you for these great interviews cheers 😎

    Amazing interview! I love hearing the stories that never come up in generic interviews and I love hearing my favourite artists speak with such passion for their craft. Thank you Rick and Irwin!
    Geek out and rock on!! 🤘🏻🎶🎸

    What an awesome interview! Southern Sons were a huge influence on my formative drumming years and it was so good to hear great stories and amazing banter. Thanks for the post!

      Thanks Mick. I think a lot of musos who learnt their craft around the time we did in Australia can thank those guys. Irwin caught up with Louie Shelton for the first time in 30 years before we went to air. Louie happened to be at my place so I texted Irwin to Skype in a little earlier. It was nice to be a part of that. Louie produced their Nothing But The Truth album and said he thought Southern Sons were the Aussie Toto :)

    Really enjoyable chat Rick & Irwin. Took me all day yesterday on and off, but I still feel like 3 hours wasn't enough for Irwin's story. What genuine, nice, guitar stoked guy!

    • @RickHollis
      @RickHollis  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Sharpy! I agree, 3 hours wasn't enough but I had to round it up there for the sake of the viewers. I feel another episode is in order and Irwin is keen to come back for another round in the future. I could talk guitar and let these guys tell their story for a lot longer if time wasn't an issue.

    Guys, that was absolutely epic! Brilliant interview, Rick. And THANK YOU Irwin for your music and sharing so many cool stories. You met Jeff Porcaro?!? WOW!!! From that first time I saw you live with Hans Valen at the Spyhole to the most recent at the Chelsea Heights with the Sons, I think you're fucking brilliant and can't wait until this shit is all over so we can enjoy your playing once again!

    This is so awesome. What incredible stories. My childhood hero. I have 2 Valley Arts Custom Pro's, one is a Lukather signature. Such nice guitars to play, like Jack says, just buttery.

    Loved this interview.
    I’ve seen Irwin many times from his solo album days to Mary. Always found his guitar work to be criminally under rated. I hope we get a heads up when this signature guitar is released

    Thank you so much Rick and Irwin for this interview, absolute information Gold! Both Jack and Brett Garsed have been major influences on me and to hear all of the stories brings such joy to me as a fellow Aussie guitar player. Hearing about how Jack used to trot up to Melbourne on the weekends to visit music stores very much reminds me of when my friends and I also used to catch the train from Bendigo to Melbourne to do the same when we were 14/15 to visit stores like Brashes and Greville st guitars in Parahan as well as Gallins, really great times. One of my fondest memories was going into Gallins and trying an SLO100 with a Lukather Valley Arts signature, that sound and vision has never left me to this day. I also remember about 8 years or so ago when Jack's Green faced Egnator pre was for sale in Melbourne, I just got in too late though :(

    Brilliant interview Rick. I’m a huge southern sons fan. Saw them live back in 93’ on the Sunshine Coast! Got there first 2 albums on cd 💿. There whole catalog has just recently been added 2 Spotify so been playing it in the car 🚗!

    I'm sure Jack would know that what Mike Landau did to him (made him feel ordinary), HE did to a lot of local guitarists when we saw him totally shredding at such a young age. After the first time I saw him play with Hans Valen, I drove home in a daze, and didn't touch my guitar for a week. 😄
    Plenty of people would know that there are a few good clips on RUclips of Jack shredding with Southern Sons
