+jimmy fabs That I could be such a dork:). A dork who can play drums and guitar as well as sing and who was in a band can't remember the name ah Nivena? :) The guy is super talented and he enjoys his fame but not in an obnoxious way.
to those haters they should know that Dave sang back up vocals on some tracks but loved the drums and Nirvana and his bandmates and he went on to be a full time singer and guitarist because his true calling and to honor Kurt cobain
So many depressed defensive people in the comments. Dave Grohl has an extremely high respect for other musicians, and this cover was not meant to bash on Elton John Or to disrespect his music. He knows he can't hit all of the notes, and I'm sure if he cared he would have chose another song. This is just Dave going out on stage and having a little fun.
There's something so beautiful about this. Dave is extremely charismatic in this performance. He gives enough life to everyone in the audience to just smile, even though it's only an acoustic talk show performance. It's not that he did a fantastic job vocally or instrumentally, or a terrible one, it's about a man, a guitar, and an audience. When I watch this, I see people just being people, and celebrating life as it is now. It makes me almost cry every time I watch. thanks Dave ;)
I was thinking almost the opposite. He "skipped the crap" to get to the chorus, he told people to join in and he didn't do a particularly good job of singing it. I thought he butchered the song and the audience participation was contrived. Someone unassumingly covering this song and doing such a good job it moves people to sing along, that would be worth celebrating.
Talk about reinventing himself. The guy came out of one he'll of a situation to become what I fear will be the last of the true Rock an Roll stars. God bless you Dave.

Gave me a whole new respect for Dave. I was a Nirvana fan, and never really gave him a chance. He's talented, funny, and can scream just like Sam Kinison. Awesome!...Plus I love Kilborn!

What Grohl seems to do here is acknowledge both the pop-corniness and the true beauty of the song simultaneously. One can tell, watching this, that Grohl honestly regards the song to be great, despite what he sees as the absurd length of the verses relative to the chorus. He successfully pays homage to the song without a shred of a hint of taking himself too seriously. His talented performance is both funny and sincere, draped with a nonchalant coolness that is hard to replicate. This is likely the greatest performance of this song to which I have ever borne witness.
Just finished his book; The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music. He takes himself to seriously, considers himself a dork and a nerd. He's always humbled by the music greats - read the book, the ups and downs, tears and laughs, a fantastic read, what a lovely guy 🙂

Nirvana was the Beatles for Generation X, Red Hot Chili Peppers are our Stones, Pearl Jam was "the Who" Radiohead was is our Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains is our Black Sabbath & Soundgarden is our Led Zeppelin...... Kurt is our John Lennon & Dave Grohl is our Paul McCartney... Long Live Generation X
i love how he said he wanted to "capture that magic" from Almost Famous..love that scene and anyone who is a fan of 70s rock n roll should watch that movie its great
MCFC ok Yeah I know I’m a huge Fruscinate fan. why are half the comments on this video about John Fruscinate? They’re not even about Elton’s version lmao. It’s all a competition to so many people
I respect that people like John Frusiantes cover more. But i like how Dave sings it. It makes it much more about the song and less about the preformance for me, And i like that.
I had the pleasure of seeing the Foo open with an acoustic set for Bob Dylan at the X in St. Paul MN in '06 and it is still to this day the best overall live performance I have ever witnessed. I'm not even that big on the FF but Grohl is a natural performer, not just with the music but his entire act. You can tell how hard he has worked to become a polished storyteller, musician and comedian all rolled into one. Bob Dylan didn't stand a chance. While the Eagles are the best band I've ever heard from a Live vs. album standpoint, Dave is my favorite complete live performer. Interesting to think about where he would be with everything had Kurt not passed. Keep on rocking Mr Grohl!
Grohl is both great and really respected in musical circles. However, it must be hard for him to be on Network TV because it stifles a good 3/4ths of his vocabulary
I adore his way of talking to the crowd. I think the gum (which everyone is annoyed with- except me!) is to keep his energy level at bay. He's usually jumping around on stage!! He's incredible. Always. :) just more talented that he can do all this AND chew gum!! Love it!
One of the funniest things I have ever seen. Classic Dave Grohl - including the gum. Hold me closer, Tony Danza I've always really loved Dave's sense of humor. He is the coolest dork that ever lived.

serious question, why do people like Frusciante? RHCP are great and all, but they're guitar isn't that central to the band if u ask me. Just seems like people freak out over John cuz he's the guitarist of a band they really like but don't have an objective reason to why. What about him is soooooo good that Rolling Stone rated him higher in greatest guitarist of all time over so many more influential players?
Nicholas van Tol his a brilliant guitarist, he improvisations during songs are sweet. Don't get me wrong his not the most technical guitarist but he has so much funk it's untrue .
Idk bout funk dude, you want REAL funk ur talkin bands like the meters, the JB's and Sly Stone, RHCP and this frusciante borrow a lot of funk elements but they're hardly part of that genre, i really enjoy technical playing to an extent so maybe his improv is justBased on taste
Nicholas van Tol I personally think there's huge funk elements in a lot of John's playing style , I also wouldn't say they are "funk" . I Can understand why people think his not that good , but I personally think he deserves to be where he his today.
I'm not saying he's not good, he's a talented artist overall (making music in general) but his musician-ship I'd say is lacking for the podium he's put on
I adore your version of this song Dave Grohl. As a long time fan, I have always admired the feeling in your voice. I bought The Colour and the Shape album when I was about 15 and used to spend hours analysing the lyrics of your songs. I have been to see you live in Auckland, New Zealand. I also loved the green liney lights and liquid nitrogen you used during the unplugged version of Everlong. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. We love your work. I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but may I please quote this cover in an artwork I'm creating? At this stage it may be a static image or perhaps a story told by animation with this song as the background - or only a portion of the song, or name dropping, whichever you give permission for. I have tonnes of ideas and need to discipline myself to be concise ... PLEASE LIKE so Dave Grohl can inspire me to do my best ever art!
Years ago, during drunk karaoke I improvised "Hold me closer, Tina Yothers!" Probably the booze, but it made several people spew beer on the heads of the person in front of 'em. So funny I almost didn't make it through the song. To this day, when I hear that song I think of Family Ties.
never seen Almost Famous but "tiny dancer" is one of the many great classic Elton songs from the 70's. Dave can't be serious that he never heard it lol.
Deve Grohl is a damn fine example of hell yes. Humor, decency, talent together with humility and respect for those who came before... he can chew gum with his sphincter for all I care. Good man, wonderful creator and musician. Shut up.
And yet still people like Alyson Bateman above don't realise and have to comment "But it is the drummer from Nirvana" and whilst people get bites, unfortunately people will continue to bring out this joke. It's morphed into "Looks like that bloke from Foo Fighters" too.
ToWatchMusic I hope THAT was a joke too... I really hope you know he's a lead singer of the "Foo Fighters"... Not shitty ass Nickleback. LOL!!!! I love Dave Grohl!!!! He actually has an entire album that he did entirely on his own. He played two separate guitars, a bass guitar, drums of course, and sang... All on his own!!!! If you don't understand how this is possible... I wish you the best in life, and hope you educate yourself a little more on how recording studios work. I don't mean this part directly to you, ToWatchMusic... Only to those that say shit like, "That's impossible to play all instruments AT ONCE!!!!" Which he OBVIOUSLY didn't do. It was done in a recording studio. Which I find VERY obvious how it's done.
I love it when idiots can't appreciate musical sarcasm. And you know what most people who do musical sarcasm, purposely destroy the song by not singing it right and just making a spoof of a song, this was the mildest spoof I have ever seen plus Dave does whatever the hell he wants and he's always cool as a cucumber.
What does being a guy have to go with him having "An absolutely beautiful voice"??? Which he does... But, it doesn't change anything about you. Because you gave credit, where credit is deserved.
Hallo SOS Mother and Father of all creation are here in the physical in person on earth to show the way phone home today! It's been an arduous journey for Mama Papa to reach all on earth to wake up!
+Jesper “Dib” Locher I didn't say it was a competition but by the way your communicating you think it is... All I said was Frusciante is better when was it wrong to voice a personal opinion?
+Jesper “Dib” Locher sorry Jesper but your acting like a doosh... It doesn't make it a fact by me saying Frusciante is better as the words are coming from my mind and I'm inputting them on here, it's you that perceives me to think that way when in fact it's me thinking it. I also replied to a comment from someone I assumed agreed as they said Frusicante so please don't tell me how my mind works it how something should be written.
+Jesper “Dib” Locher to be honest I didn't think we were having a discussion as questions are usually involved. We are not exchanging ideas your just telling me how I should write an opinion...

Yes, and he has to chew the gum, because his throat gets dry when we sings. I always wondered why he chewed it.
to those haters they should know that Dave sang back up vocals on some tracks but loved the drums and Nirvana and his bandmates and he went on to be a full time singer and guitarist because his true calling and to honor Kurt cobain
Love. Dave. :D
Dave Grohl’s personality is part of the whole package that makes him so likeable!
I was there screaming, I know the scream may sound female, but thats just how I get when I am around Grohl.
PseudoKirby Haha can you hear it in the video? Where is it?
Lmaooo I love that
Same (I am female).
"lets skip all the other crap and just get to the chorus"
dave you legend! he really is one of the best performers alive today, he is one of my idols

Most aggressively that song has ever been sung. It's fascinating.
It's quite high for a male vocal, especially not opera-trained :P In the original Elton has to use falsetto to reach it.
Listen to John Frusciante sing it
Have ever heard john frusciante's?
Listen to John frusciante
Nah John fruiscante man he did it was better twice
It's crazy what became of Dave once Nirvana faded away. Thank God he's one of the ones who made it out of 90's alright. We miss those who didn't
He killed Kurt, 100%

He's way better then the drummer from nirvana
he is the drummer from nirvana
Crash Corpse Yeah man this guy's great but that drummer from Nirvana is a right pratt lol.
I've always felt that the drummer from Them Crooked Vultures is better
But they both aren't a match for Beelzeboss
Edgar Cruz nah the one drummer from Queens Of The Stone Age for that one song forgot it was way better
the singer from foo fighters is a good drummer
Dave is a performer, it's what he lives for. I think he's very talented, an awesome human being, and hot as hell!!!

Dave Grohl, trolling youtubers even before youtube existed.
Mason Brocklehurst Best comment here, haha, so true.
As much as I adore the Foo Fighters, I would love to see Dave do a live solo acoustic cover album. This and Stairway To Heaven are extravagant!
You should have seen the FF acoustic tour 15 or so years ago.

Cade Bengert I only asked about his singing, silly, not "when he plays." I know he plays drums sometimes and does not sing during it.
He chews it when he sings too. There is a running joke that he has been chew the same piece since Nirvana.

Years ago, during drunk karaoke I improvised "Hold me closer, Tina Yothers!" Probably the booze, but it made several people spew beer on the heads of the person in front of 'em. So funny I almost didn't make it through the song. To this day, when I hear that song I think of Family Ties.
I fucking love you Grohl!! My rock star hero always. ☺ It has been an honor growing up with your music. Foo Fighters & Nirvana! Forever.
HOLD ME CLOSE NOW TONY DANZA
Hold me closer Tony Danza.
cmomofilm hahahahahah laughed so hard maaan xDD
I just thought... hold me closer George Costanza. Not sure if I missed a joke though :(
Good one, got any knock knock jokes? Have you heard the one about the chicken crossing the road?
I remember when that episode came on I watched it man I feel old.
Jeez relax we get it Frusciante did a better cover...can't we like both as artists?
No one covered this song better than John Frusciante!
Oh yes :-)
Maksim Senko yes yes!
never seen Almost Famous but "tiny dancer" is one of the many great classic Elton songs from the 70's. Dave can't be serious that he never heard it lol.
Yeah the guy was a music nerd as a child. He's just being a ham, which a lot of people forget he used to be like all the time.
This was pretty good. John frusciante does an amazing cover over this song!!!
This is fucking amazing idc what anyone says. Great performance
I wish I could give this more love and thumbs up
this is total gold
Dave's Funny & Talented. He can make The Amour Hotdog sounds cool, LOL !!!!
I love to acoustic performances, so beautiful & intiment
there were at least 5 people in the audience who didnt know the song at all
Hold me closer Bernie Sanders
Ew
lmao
Trump 2k16
Tony Danza LOL
dilmzy this made me spit out my drink laughing!!! So random lmao
Deve Grohl is a damn fine example of hell yes. Humor, decency, talent together with humility and respect for those who came before... he can chew gum with his sphincter for all I care. Good man, wonderful creator and musician. Shut up.
I miss the 90's, the last generation of real musicians
John Frusciante does a way, way, WAY better cover than this one.
Respect to Dave Grohl also.
I cry when I hear Frusciante sing it
Because daves version is a half a joke. why even bring up Fruscinate?
i respectfully disagree from the one i've seen
jack because it’s relevant?
This is his masterpiece. And yes, he has a lot of slower songs, but you pocked a great first one. ❤
I love him
That dude looks like the drummer from Nirvana
If I had a pound for every time I saw that joke in a RUclips comments section, I'd be rich
And yet still people like Alyson Bateman above don't realise and have to comment "But it is the drummer from Nirvana" and whilst people get bites, unfortunately people will continue to bring out this joke.
It's morphed into "Looks like that bloke from Foo Fighters" too.
yeah but hes the singer from the band nickleback
Tom Andrews you would also be very fat
ToWatchMusic
I hope THAT was a joke too...
I don't mean this part directly to you,
ToWatchMusic...
Only to those that say shit like,
"That's impossible to play all instruments AT ONCE!!!!" Which he OBVIOUSLY didn't do. It was done in a recording studio. Which I find VERY obvious how it's done.
Yea man , dave was held back by kurt .. Iam glad dave had his chance to show us can do more than just kickass on drums. Big fan
In these comments: Butthurt trolls who can't stand the fact that Dave is just too badass.
Best concert I ever went to... Foo Fighters.
He's perfect.
I am a guy, but I have to say that he has an absolutely beautiful voice.
Wat
What does being a guy have to go with him having "An absolutely beautiful voice"???
Which he does... But, it doesn't change anything about you. Because you gave credit, where credit is deserved.
This takes me back.
Hallo SOS Mother and Father of all creation are here in the physical in person on earth to show the way phone home today! It's been an arduous journey for Mama Papa to reach all on earth to wake up!
John Frusciante......
Frusciante is much better!! :)
