    One of the most iconic scenes in all of cinema.....the meanings of friendships.....forgiveness.....coming of age.....and most of all the power of music.

      Listening to the song while reading that quote it occurs to me that even music - for it to have an effect on us - requires to go back and forth in time, both recollecting and anticipating. In the present moment we hear only a single note, which means nothing to us. Only by remembering what came before and anticipating what will come music can affect us.

This movie scene brings back great memories that seem like only yesterday.

    I'm a writer and an editor, and what I love most about this film is the way they're slowly and gently taking steps towards a sense of an ending. The film starts with Will's sister leaving him and then years go by and he looks so much like her now, and the casting is anything but a coincidence because by leaving him her music she left a part of her behind for him to absorb. It goes on to show us Will leaving home too and while everyone eventually leave, his journey begins with a promise to his mom that he's coming back. And all throughout the film he drifts further and further away from her as he grows up and she's left behind, waiting for him. Even losing your virginity is the end of something. And the fact is that Will cried after that night, it could be for a million reasons but I saw it as a reaction to sex as an act that forces you to Cross the line between innocence and a more mature version of yourself WHICH HE'S NOT READY FOR. The party proceeding this scene is a way for Russel to say goodbye and let go of the band (at the moment), this scene is basically the last time they're all together both in body and in spirit, everyone is a part of something in this moment. A part of someone, in this moment. And then they get to New York, and Penny is there at the restaurant and Mona Lisas and mad hatters Starts playing and this que is that sense of an ending they've been building up to for the past hour, and Will sees her running out and RUNS AFTER HER. SEPARATING himself, putting a DISTANCE between him and the rest of his friends, if that's what they ever were to begin with. And it's genius because the moment with Penny in the hotel is the first time he truly connected with someone since this tiny dancer moment on the bus. But he's the only one who will remember it, and when he goes back to the rolling Stones office he speaks on the phone and crying, and I truly felt that he was grieving for something. I don't know what it is yet, I'll have to watch it again but he was grieving, and he's a different person now, and he's lonely and sad and confused and he looks for his sister for comfort instead of turning to his mom, and his sister is back home but his mind and his heart are somewhere else completely, their roles have switched. It's so gentle and so quiet and so moving, just gorgeous. Just like Will. Gentle, quiet, brilliant, beautiful.

      I love all of this and you said it so clearly and beautifully. For me, as an addict to alcohol, it brought me back to what it’s like to be a child. He didn’t care about the substance they were all intaking, he was experiencing life through their eyes, but in a sober mindset. It brought me to a point that made me believe that I can still do that too. Our inner child - is the ruler when we we actually listen to ourselves. And when we listen to ourselves, there in lies the magic

    I remember watching this movie by chance, I knew nothing about it, and it was so long ago.
    But to this day it's still one of my favorite movies and this scene still makes my eyes water, because despite their differences, it's the love for music that brought them together and keeps them together no matter what.
    We all need friends like that.

    Wow, in 1974 I was in primary school thinking life wasn't fair!
    I Australia we had countdown on Saturday and Sunday. Molly would make himself look like a bit of an idiot.
    I remember we wouldn't be home all day no electronic devices hanging with friends and thinking how much we couldn't stand school and how our parents shouldn't make us go,
    Now I am 60 and thinking back it was awesome and so were the eighty's. I remember the first performer I ever saw in concert, Billy Joel at theby town hall it was awesome. Since then I have traveled the world and seen hundreds of bands and I must admit the oldies are still some of the best!
    It's so sad life has become so overtaken by stress and technology.

    I wonder if that is a better version of the song than the original. It leaves out that slightly awkward, tuneless stanza in the song ((But oh, how it feels so real...) which only seems to serve the purpose of needlessly delaying the onset of the chorus, which the ear is aching to hear. But I am really keen to hear other people's opinion.

    • @stephanedegremont4961
      @stephanedegremont4961 Год назад +1

      Mmm I wouldn't call it tuneless.. it jumps into a different tune that mostly makes sense when the chorus arrives, but the most important is the change of rythm after the calm of the verses. This bridge being upbeat compared to the rest of the song enables them to slow down the rythm when he says "sloowly... sooooflty..." and makes the climax of the chorus. The chorus being delayed is a bit the whole concept of this song, as well as cutting songs is the whole concept of movie/ad soundtracks. Well you guessed my opinion at this point: that is a great piece of movie clip, but in no way is it a better version of the song than the original :).
