  • Today we’re out collecting Oak seedlings for use as future bonsai, these have all germinated under some big old oak trees in our woodland area.
I’ll also be collecting some slightly older oak trees that have grown over the past few years, almost like collecting from the wild like Yamadori Bonsai 😊🌳.
Then we’ll head over to the greenhouse and I’ll show you how I’m transplanting & preparing the Oak saplings and seedling so they’ll all do great in small pots or containers.
Hope you enjoy and find todays video useful.
    Thank you all for watching.

Excellent. I've grown from acorns the last couple of years. 100 % germination rate. A couple have died off for some reason but they seem to be pretty bullet-proof otherwise. Going to try holm oak this year as we had 100 MPH winds during storm Ciaran which made sure that there are plenty acorns lying everywhere! Thanks for posting.

Thank you Kit, a very interesting video, now i Know what to do. You have so many small Oaks in your garden do you not have issues with Squirrels eating all the acorns ?. Just found this video, be in touch in the next few days.

Thanks 😊 I guess there are so many oak & Hazel around that they have plenty, plus we have cats & dogs that probably deter them a bit.

whens a good time to dig up some oaks that are maybe 2/3/4 years old. they're quite a bit bigger than these so will have a deep taproot. i thought it would be best to collect in March time? what do you think?

Yes I believe that is what is recommended, March time or just before the buds break, unless you can give them protection over winter. But then again I have dug trees at all the wrong times before and most survived.

Do you give them water after potting? Or because they are dormant it’s not necessary?
