    The real issue back then with buying heroes wasn't the price of champions. It was the rune pages. In order to be competitive you had to have a fully leveled account and a fully filled out rune page. A rune page itself ran the price of a champion. The runes for a rune page cost the price of 2-3 champions. Which means in order to effectively play one champion with one set of runes, you had to sacrifice the potential of playing 4-5 other champions. There was a bit of overlap in similar roles, but if you wanted to play two roles, you needed about 8-9 champions worth of runes and pages. And if you wanted multiple pages for one champion to help counter enemy picks, that's another rune page, another half-set of runes, another 1-2 champions. If you wanted to play some specific champions with very specific rune requirements (Akali comes to mind) that's *another* rune page, another half-set of runes.
    You can see where this becomes an issue. You either pay for champs and pages, or you main 1-2 champions on the slow slow grind to getting a third (and then needing *another* rune page for it). This is all gone with the current system, and all the boxes dropping free stuff and the occasional missions giving extra resources, and the expanded set of free champions, and many old champions being extremely cheap, etc. Now Riot survives on whales who really need that 9th Ahri or Lux skin which is great for the F2P players but.... yeah.... You can really tell where priorities lie when it comes to balance changes sometimes. If Riven or Irelia ever gets a bug or falls out of favor it gets fixed fast but some people have to live with crippling bugs for months until it affects one of the favorites or, worse yet, an actual televised competitive match.

    • @EpicEthra
      @EpicEthra 3 года назад +2

      That was the absolute worst, and also the fact that the prices were so different. All the champions I want interested in were are the cheap ones, and the ones I wanted were super expensive. And of course I had no runes because I wanted to play different characters. At least in smite you get to try out any character in the private training mode, but not in league.

    The one line that hurts me is "It's like the Runescape equivalent of Warcraft." As someone who played both the aforementioned games when they were as new as LoL and HoN were at the time of this video(this is a 2011 video about 2009 and 2010 MOBAs, so "first 2 years"), I found 0-2 year old Runescape was heaps better than 0-2 year old WoW, which kind of breaks the analogy for me.
    No kidding WoW nowadays is a huge improvement, but at the time Runescape felt like a fun world to be in, and compete with friends for progress and read all the things that were being said. I logged back in frequently and kept grinding because I felt like it. Comparatively, WoW when it was new felt visually muddy, lifeless(granted I main played undead, so that may've effected things xD) and the thing that kept drawing me back was my family's wallet, because we were paying a monthly fee to play. Now, as I understand, WoW is well worth playing, but it took time to get there, so, at the beginning, the reason to play Runescape wasn't that it was "budget WoW or WoW for people without credit cards" it was "Why pay for something that isn't an improvement?"

      @Blackn3t 3 года назад +1

      @@Taenarius I have like 3 active accounts in LoL (1 main, 1 secondary server, 1 smurf for playing with low mmr friends) and the last time I felt like I had to grind for champs was in the year 2015. Since they introduced role selection in 2016, you basically only ever need a few champs for your main role and you're good. And it's definitely not hard to get a few selected champs. It's just hard to get all of them when you're a completionist. Imho the bigger problem is that if you want to try out a champ before you buy him, you have to go to the public beta server or wait for it to get into free rotation. So the average player will often buy something and find out that they don't really like playing the champ.

    If you play it enough you can 'buy' the champions with essence (IP back then). You get that from just playing the game. Also... wow this old League UI and the old jungle is insane to see if you're still playing.

    RuneScape across the charts has been rated a better game. 🤣 WoW died ages ago and has piss poor developers who look for cash grabs and can’t fix the power vacuums they create with every new release of gear.

    having played lol when I was like 12 to 15, it was great, it had low PC specs, and was widely available really early.
    Aka great for kids, doesn't cost anything, and even low spec pc's could play it

    What? 2:10 that's just wrong right? league of legends never cost money... it has ALWAYS been an F2P game. I mean I could be wrong but unless my memory of playing beta and season 1-7 are just figments of my imagination, im pretty sure i've played for YEARS and never payed a dime...

    4:20 "the fact that you can't have the hero without buying it"
    Oh no, the game expects players to play the game in order to unlock new characters... What a disaster /s
    I haven't paid for a League champ since I started playing (10+ years ago) and I have all of them...
    Even with new champs, just casually play a game or 5 every week, do your daily and level for free capsules with more blue essence...

  • @jms418p2

      I mean, the champions are still locked behind either a paywall or a time sink compared to other MOBAs that offer all heroes for free and only charge time/money for cosmetics that have no effect on the gameplay. It does give people willing to spend money or people who have been playing for a long time an advantage over newer players (outside of skill), which is a valid criticism of the game

    • @Jakejolly133
      @Jakejolly133 3 года назад +1

      @@DeescoTown I feel like that's also why LOL is such a success, it's not instant satisfaction. You have to play in order to unlock more champions. If you instantly got a new champ on release it wouldn't be fun cause everyone would insta-lock that champion and it might be days/many games later before you get to play them.

    "Dota makes money just selling skins and cosmetics" Sure, but 70% of those skins and cosmetics are simply color swaps. Which should be free.

    You DO NOT have to pay for heroes in HotS, but just spend time to unlock them. I played an hour a day for like a year or whatever, and unlocked MOST of the heroes and NEVER paid a dime.
