Had my insight for 7 years and have two battery packs. The original with the car and one from ebay for £200. I do a re-balance on each one every 6 months when I rotate the batteries. Just no other maintenance and never failed an MOT.
Great video and very detailed keep up the good work!

Thank you for watching and commenting. I just purchased a grid charger and will be installing it soon. I've had this car for 18 years and it has been an excellent vehicle.

Excellent video! The 1st Gen Insight has been on my want list for a long time! Really cool to see the inner workings and watch the infamous battery being replaced. If I was doing long freeway commuting, I'd definitely have one. Until then, my '81 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel LX Pickup will continue to be my daily driver.

Thank you. This Honda, like all Hondas has been extremely reliable. It came with its own tool kit, owner's manual, and shop manual as Honda intended this car to be for the enthusiast. You do have to adjust the valves every 100,000.00 miles. to drive it correctly and to squeeze the MPG out of it you stay off the brakes and learn the true meaning of conservation of energy.

Well, those were simpler models it seems. The CRZ (2010-2016) NiHM and LiON battery packs require recalibrating of some components. No wonder the local dealer (Long Island, NY) wants $5,400 to replace mine.
    I have two questions:
#1 Did the Honda Insights have alternators to keep the under hood battery charged?
#2 After seeing the tech do this job, would you do it yourself?

First, thank you very much for watching. Yes, just like any car, the first-generation Honda Insight has an alternator under the hood that keeps the lead acid battery charged that is also under the hood. Good question. Probably not as what he did comes with a 2-year warranty. However, I am getting ready to install a grid charger myself and will do a video on that. After I install the grid charger, I'm going to sell my Insight as I just don't drive it any longer.

$350 for an install is not bad at all. I may pull the trigger on an Insight.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I thought the installation fee was very reasonable considering the technician drove 3+ hours to get to my place and took the old battery away. It is still functioning well.

@@kensshowtell And I always favored the first gen Honda Insight because it made no compromises for maximum MPG

Yes, it was truly a car built by engineers for those who were interested it driving it as they intended. A high-quality product, only built in Japan, 15,000 worldwide. Where are you located as I've been considering selling mine.@@lucristianx

Thank you for video!! I've replaced the IMA battery twice in mine. Fun times. I have a red 03 Insight that I bought new. Blew at head gasket at 324k miles. Put another engine in it with 68k. Have driven it approximately 12k since the engine change. Does anyone know if an IMA (motor, not battery) from a manual tranny will fit an auto tranny model?

Thank you for watching and commenting. I've bought a grid charger that I will install soon. I don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps others do.
