Hi guys. Just wanted to say sorry if I didn’t give enough affordable options in the video. I only spoke on the cameras I’ve owned or shot with cause I can’t really speak on things I have no experience with. I know people don’t watch the full video or may miss some parts so let me reiterate a few things I already said. 1. Don’t buy cameras that are popular or expensive or because your favorite photographers have them it’ll be a waste of time and money. 2. Photography is about what you put in front of your camera and the camera that gets you out shooting. I listed a few cheaper options to what I showed but I’ll list a few more. Point and shoots Konica c35 Fuji Cardia MANY Olympus and yashicas Ricoh gr1 (kinda pricy) 35mm Pentax k1000 Minolta SRT (listed in video with photos) Canon ae1 (mentioned in video) Olympus OM10 Medium format Bronica sq Pentax 645 Mamiya 645 A bunch of TLR’s but I don’t like 6x6 so it’s hard for me to recommend something I don’t like but nonetheless they’re good cheap 120 options Being mean, passive aggressive, and rude is unnecessary. If I don’t make a video and talk about the ALL the things you want me to, remember I’m trying and I’m human. This is supposed to be fun but this community is full of bully’s and people thinking they’re better than everyone else cause they know everything. Relax! It’s okay, breathe a lil. Have a good one!
I hate pretentious folk. Always ruining someone’s day, clearly, and they probably get nothing out of it. You listed all those cameras and I still came out of it like, “well he did say find what works for you.”
Thanks for being so generous with all of this information. Greatly appreciated. Your work is incredible. You encourage instead of discourage. The gatekeepers and know-it-alls can kick rocks. We’re all here to learn, create and grow.
When I first got into film I used my mom’s old camera. It was pretty decent although a tad restrictive. It was a great way to experiment and see if I actually liked the hobby. It’s refreshing to find a photographer encourage people to buy cameras that are not necessarily popular.
I remember when my grandpa gave me a canon ae-1 in college (2016). I just started using it last year and I loved it ever since. I gets the job done for me every time. Keep it up man! Also I miss the podcast lol
Thanks for the video. When I need maximum image quality, depth-of-field control, and/or perspective control, I choose a large format view camera with front and rear movements. (Calumet 4x5 inch monorail view camera with 65/90/135mm lenses) When I shoot landscapes, still life, and portraits, I prefer to use medium format cameras. (Fuji 6x7cm with fixed 90mm lens, Fuji 6x9cm with fixed 65mm lens, or Mamiya RB67 with 50/90/180mm lenses) When I need to shoot documentary, street, macro, astronomy, sports, scientific, travel, I prefer 35mm cameras. (Nikon SLR with 14mm to 1000mm lenses and Leica M6 rangefinder with 21/35/90mm lenses)
My entry to film photography was Nikon FE. Loved it, so I bought myself Olympus OM-1 (love the shutter sound) and then found Minolta Riva Zoom 90 p'n's at home and used it as well (but I want to get Olympus Mju-II, so I'm glad you recommend it). And this video came at the time, when I am waiting for my first medium format to arrive from Japan. Bronica ETRS 645. Cannot wait! Enjoyable video again, Vuh!
Hype for your book. Ive been shooting with 35 mm for a couple years now although now is the time im really really getting into the nitry and gritty of it, and partially a may even be due to your videos inspiring me so much. i really want to explore medium format next so thank you for this video.
Great examples and inspiring photography as always! Since getting into film I've actually been using a Canon WP-1 that my parents gave me when I was a kid, and I love it. It's all about finding the camera for your own purposes!
But I do wanna mention that I recommended this camera and it’s under $500 in some cases under $200 for just the body. For people saying I didn’t list any affordable options
Good video! I mean, I put my sign under all of your cameras....the only thing is that those cameras set you back quite a lot. I mean most of those cameras cost (at least over here in Europe) min. 1.000 US$ up. More budget friendlier things like a Kiev88 for medium format or the mentioned Canon AE1 or a Yashica are maybe a better way to start of your photogame if have no idea about film photography.
I always get the notification for your new vids on my phone but I make sure I watch it on my laptop with headphones so I get the full visual and audio experience.
Excellent survey. I like the way you keep stressing the importance of finding gear that makes you want to go out and shoot. That's what it's all about. Andy
i did the same i was getting every popular camera until i finally found the leica m3 for my every day carry on and only 35mm camera i won now , and for medium format i came to love sqaure format and landed on th4e hasselblad 500cm which still till this day blows my mind on the quality the hassy lenses give ive owned the RB/RZ the pentax 67, mamiya 645 every variant and none of them gave me the same feeliong as the leica m3 and the hasselblad 500cm so yeah it really matter on personal prefernce and just finding the camera for you :)
My list, decided by owing dozens of film cameras. The only major options I haven't tried are from Leica but I do enjoy soviet m39 glass. Olympus 35RC for small camera Nikon FM3a for slr Pentax 67 for medium format
I got a Pentax SV on eBay for £89, it takes M42 lenses so some of the best 35mm lenses ever made, fantastic buy, any Pentax M42 camera is more than worth the money
Pentax M42 mount cameras are so slept on, i have Nikon, Canon, Leica 35mm cameras but i will say my Pentax Spotmatic is my favorite SLR. And the lenses are dirt cheap and really well made. I picked up an absolutely mint 55/1.8 for $50 at my local camera store.
@@Hasselbaddie Pentax 35mm cameras are slept on overall, even if the K mount glass is harder to get a hold of its still brilliant, the k1000 etc just get branded beginner cameras so they're disregarded but they hold up against anything I've ever seen. SRT 101 is such underrated fine camera. For me OM-1 is my favourite 35mm. That Yashica TLR you have there is so affordable for getting started. Well put together channel btw, very different to own my YT photography channel. Just subscribed.
Tbh I think TLR's are sleeper cameras. Mamiya C330 lenses are as good as the RZ/RB And you can get one in mint condition for $200 with multiple lenses. I'm actually really happy not many RUclipsrs use TLR's because the price will skyrocket like it did with the Yashica Mat 124G for literally no other reason than a few YT channels started praising it for being so cheap
You can have probably 100+ different combination of great 35mm with 1-2 fantastic lenses that cost less than 2-300 bucks. Great time to shoot 35mm unless if you need to do it with a trendy rangefinder / Pointnshoot.

The best 35mm rangefinder is the Leica M5. Unless you have tiny hands or are a wuss and can’t carry a slight heavier camera. Best meter, best finder(next to the M3), very best ergonomics of any rangefinder.
Agree, somewhat. I have an M5 and an M2 and love them both. I've had two M3s and an M4 and sold them. I like shooting with a 35 wide angle, which the M3 can't do without goggles for the lenses. But the M5 has that fantastic semi spot meter and the smooth as silk shutter speed dial.
