Wow. This is the first time I've heard Vera Hall. What an amazing voice. Thanks so much to the Lomax's for saving this beautiful music for all of us to hear.
Tell the story, Vera!! Her spoken words strike me even more than her singing, the way she lovingly details and personalizes the Christmas story. The oxen’s breath to keep warm by. “If I was there.” What a master storyteller to bring new eyes to something that’s been told so many times.
We got the Lomax Southern Journey recordings in the 1960s, I loved Vera Hall's singing. I still love this story and the songs. We do have a hard time! There ar wonderful recordings of Ms Hall at the Library of Congress too.
I'm not religious, but I could listen to this woman speak for eternity. Interesting to me also, how her interpretation of the story seems to weave in themes of the racism and segregation she must have known all too well. In particular, her description of how the "hotel manager" rejected Mary, not because the "hotel" was really full, but on grounds of prejudice.
Lol...not bad for a beginner...I wish I saw this a week ago, perfect to share for Christmas...and yeah, most of the other comments kinda summed it up...wow...
My God...what a beautiful..stunning...talented woman! Her voice is as smooth as silk, I can listen to her all day long Lord knows..

She talks just like my great-grandmother did, and her story telling is the same kind Granny did.
