Thanks for the Video. I rented a tool kit to remove the a/c clutch assembly off my car. Could not figure out how to remove the central nut to the pulley, even with the 30 odd pieces to the kit. Read the instructions as a last resort. It said 'first remove center nut off shaft", me and my friend died laughing. Used pry bar like u did, thanks again.
Just replaced the same clutch yesterday wish Id seen this video first it would had made this job a lot easier because my local automotive experts claimed there was a snap ring holding field coil magnet in place! but there is no snap ring on field coil magnet it is pressed into place!! excellent video!!
Working on 06 crown vic thank you for posting if you had posted the noise you would have saved me search time with the hissing noise. Just like to add a/c on didn't lock so used chaind vice grip and no space for puller and hammer used long flat hub cap remover. Thank you now no more mistry noise!!!
Thanks much! Watching your video before I did the job was good for preparing me for what to expect. In my case the clutch plate was nearly as bad as yours, the clutch pulley was broken near the rim at the four points where the air slots are, and the bearing seal was off and missing some ball bearings.
Dude just did mine after watching vid about 10 times .thanks for the help . your clutch was the same as mine in a 2002 ford ranger 4x4 4.0 got the same rust stains and rusty ball bearings as you. thanks again
The washers in this case are "spacer" washers. When the clutch is not engaged the two parts will be held apart by light spring tension. There will be an air gap between the two surfaces. The amount of space in this air gap is controlled by how many spacer washers we add. When the electromagnet is engaged it will attract the two sides of the clutch and force them together causing friction and eventual lockup. This is how to clutch starts the compressor turning.
I just did this job on my crown vic and I used a 1 inch floor flange gas fitting from the hardware store and a 50 mm M6 bolt (& nut) also I used the cup washer from the top of the front shock absorber. The flange covers the field coil just right and the hole clears the pulley shaft nicely. I also the shock cup washer to press the pulley in to place with the help of a 1 inch electrical lock nut (also from the HW store)
ggenovez, I just completed this replacement. I sanded the lip of the compressor where the coil/field assy. sits to make sure it was clean. From underneath, I used a piece of wood and a hammer to drive assy. on. Be sure to align the electrical connector on the assy. with the notch on the compressor before installation.
hey mustangtyson thanks for posting, its a big help for me. My old one disintegrated in my hands on this 2001 town car. glad for it that's why I got the deal on the car. I'm replacing my tension and stationary idler as well. been in -20* below zero on a mountain with a froze idler and broke belt before so its a habit of mine. I think I can still get $20. for the old ones on eBay they look ok. thanks again.
If anyone still reads this, same car (99 Marquis), in the video between 12:26 and 12:27, op didn't show actually getting the pulley on to the shaft. Is there a trick or tool for doing this (other than doing it on a bench, obviously)? I've been at that bit for several hours now.
How muck was your clutch. and what about the little washers where do they go. Do they go in the middle before installing the last peace of the clutch. I have a lincoln where the whole ac compressor locked up I installed another compressor and redid the whole process that comes with a new ac system..could the problem been fixed by just replacing the clutch?
@ffbuzz I just used a hammer. They say you can file the shaft on the compressor to get it to fit. But i did not have to... Can you get a micrometer on the compressor shaft and the inside of the new clutch? Try using a lubricant with the install and make sure that you press fit it straight on. Not of canter. Besides that i don't know. What brand of new clutch do you have?
Hello, I know this is an old video but I have had to replace the clutch. I am having trouble getting the coil and pulley to sit all the way back to fit the snap ring. Do you have any advice?
You could take it back off and clean everything super good. Maybe with a little steel wool? Clean the snap ring Grove really well. I did mention filing something in my video but I don't remember what. Check your directions. It's it hitting the field coil?
@@mustangtyson the directions tell me to take the whole compressor off which I was trying to avoid. It seems like the coil isn't close enough to the compressor so the snap ring groove isn't fully exposed to lock in the pulley. I tried to file down the edge where the coil goes over but it hasn't helped much.
Yea we haven't filed it yet but saw that when we wrapped up for the day will get the 1 and 1 /8 socket . I guess use the socket so I can get it in period magnetic coil was seated all the way against the compressor
Kenneth Chichester I would check that your magnetic coil is all the way seated and not blocking it. Then use a 1 1/8 socket and Hammer. instructions also said you could file the fitment.
Question for the 08 grand marquis lovers. My AC went out; I changed the blend door actuator & main control module. When I change the settings you can hear a click.. but no AC, no heat or cool. Almost like the blower motor isn’t going on. Any ideas? Any fuses to check? Again.. lol. I am getting error code 25 in the dash.
Check all fuses, put the electronic climate control module in debug or test mode. Make sure it moves all the system doors. Find where the blower motor is and see if you can feel it running. Back probe motor and do voltage drop test to check it gets power
Never set the clutch down on the electrical connector. The weight of the clutch will damage the connector by bending it in toward the pulley which breaks the sill to the magnet and snap the wiring. Always place it down on the faceplate.
It would be easier to get to and work on. Although you would let all the r134a or freon out of the system and would have to get it recharged. Thats why i did not remove it.

I took a shot every time he said "um". I am now dead.
Sorry to hear about your alcoholism

Good video dang I did not get to see you run the clutch
I started falling asleep several times! I couldn't take it any more and had to shut off the video!

I say that I used a 1 1/8 socket to hammer the pulley onto the shaft in the video.
2001 Crown Victoria owner. Thank you.

Where did you get the new clutch parts at? Thanks for the video.
EXCELLENT Write up! Thank you.
about to tackle the same job on my Mustang.
Dude your special!!! The clutch should of come off completely!!!
Ya, it did
How did you press in the field coil?
Yea we haven't filed it yet but saw that when we wrapped up for the day will get the 1 and 1 /8 socket . I guess use the socket so I can get it in period magnetic coil was seated all the way against the compressor
Where did you put the spacer washers and where did you measure for the air gap?
doing this job currently but am stomped the pulley part of this does not want to seat on the magnetic coil any pointers?
Kenneth Chichester I would check that your magnetic coil is all the way seated and not blocking it. Then use a 1 1/8 socket and Hammer. instructions also said you could file the fitment.
How did you press fit it on? I can't seem to get it seated properly.

i love how you didn`t show yourself installing the coil, trust me i know it wasn`t easy
it took me over an hour to install my coil.
gamerepair2020 how did you?
What size of puller u used
How to cycle the clutch on and off
Never set the clutch down on the electrical connector. The weight of the clutch will damage the connector by bending it in toward the pulley which breaks the sill to the magnet and snap the wiring. Always place it down on the faceplate.

how much was all together? if you don't mind
My ac works but the clutch hub is like yours and it makes loud noise cant i just replace the hub and maybe the bearing if its out
No prob! Glad it helped you
Awesome, informative.
Very helpful, I have a 99 Mer Marquis as well and am doing this today. But, yes, your "ums" and "uhs" are torture to listen to.
Great job god bless
Привет мой кондиционер включен и в целом Можете ли вы помочь Как превратить
Cycling the clutch? Lol
orileys
Um um um um um um
TOOO F SLOW
I noticed you have no videos on your channel. But you seem to be able to criticize others videos....
what did u use to press fit the field coil back onto the compressor???
