Maximilian - Das Spiel von Macht und Liebe (engl. Maximilian - The Game of Power and Love) is a three part mini-series co-produced by the Austrian ORF and the German ZDF. Starz bought the rights to air it in the US in 2018 but has not done so so far.
After the death of Mary of Burgundy's father, she is the only heir to rule Burgundy. But as she is backed into a corner by her enemies, she must find a powerful husband and supporter. At the same time Maximilian of Austria clashes with his father, the Holy Roman Emperor. The young Maximilian is a fighter and out to make his own fortune.

But Burgund was not french and not a part of France back then. It was still German. Thats a major error in this movie. Thats destroying all of the fun for me.

Wonderful! The man responsible for extending Habsburg Empire through his grandsons HRE Charles I/V ( Spain, Low countries, etc & the New World) & Ferdinand I ( Austria/ Bohemia/ Royal Hungary ). There’s a Spanish tv series that dealt mainly on Charles few years back - Carlos Rey/ Emperador My interest mainly lies on the younger brother Ferdinand - Austrian Habsburg.
I know. I just wrote about the Spanish series in my assignment. Well I mentioned it and its mother series Isabel and the movie La Corona Partida that shows the story of Juana la Loca and her Habsburg husband, Maximilian's son Philipp the Handsome.
Just watched this series on Disney plus and it was great. With a bigger budget for a few proper battles would have made it even better.

Are the actors all speaking German because the lips of the red haired woman and the other women don’t match the German words being spoken. Why is that?
I wonder if it keeps getting blocked because it's on Starz? That's where I first watched it. And I loved it! Something that I noticed is that the version I watched has both German and French as the spoken languages. I think that it's amazing that the actors who played Maximillian and Mary were able to perform as well as they did in spite of the fact that they probably didn't understand each other! That being said, I'm so glad that you uploaded this so that more people can discover this show!
Might be. But I think the block was from the production company although they did not even claim Maria Theresia although having a part in it too. Idk sometimes rights are weird. And the version you saw is basically the "raw" version which I honestly have never seen but I think is very cool. Did you by chance watch my and the starz version? I always wondered how much the translations differ but could never find the starz version.
I don't know how it works on set but my guess is that they have the lines written in the script in both languages (or you only get a script in your language and know the last words so you can react naturally) and outside of acting the lingua franca is probably English. The same was and is done for Sisi and Maria Theresia. There the actors were/are Italian, Austrian & German, and Austrian (not sure if any German was involved, but might be), Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian respectively, and they also acted their part in their own languages.
I wish I could get those "raw versions" but as the general audience here in Europe, you usually only get your hands on one language version with the rest of the cast dubbed. But then again, and not to shame anyone, our dubbing in German (at least) is pretty good and you usually only notice it because it sounds a bit too perfect and accentfree. I tried watching Rubinrot aka Ruby Red with the English dub. Jeez wtf? That sounded so bland and looked so unnatural that I felt sorry for anyone who had watched that. Not that the movies was great, it's a teen movie what do you expect?, but what had substance was washed away but that horrible dub. Same for 3% on Netflix which somehow did not receive a German dub but an English one. Yeah five minutes in and I noped back out into the Portugese original with English (or was it German?) subs

I just finished Maria Theresa. I also like how your subtitles aren’t anachronistic - they’re very literal, and I appreciate that.
I find it interesting how the actors speak their native languages, and the ones who aren’t German are dubbed over. Usually, in English shows, the actors who don’t speak English are subtitled, not dubbed.
Anyway, I’m hoping the fact that you’ve included this trailer means that you will also be uploading this show soon!
I actually have already done this but youtube won't allow me to upload it. It gets immediately blocked worldwide. Because of this I gave my files to a site that specialized in uploading transalted foreign dramas. But it's best if you access their site with an ad blocker. They sometimes have weird ads like "Windows warning" that are obviously fake.

Austrians didnt refer to themselves as Austrians back then tho but rather as Germans. At least when being outside of Germany/talking to outsiders. Austrians still referred to themselves as Germans outside of the German world up until ww1/ww2. And austrian monarchs even did so up until 1871. Look up Maria Theresia quotes for example. Or Mozart.

Mozart was from Salzburg, which at the time was not part of Austria. Austria was an Archduchy of the HRE. Maximilian himself divided the Empire into "Circles", one of which was the Austrian Circle, led by the Archduchy. Of course, Austria was as such part of the HRE, but especially given that it was the home domain of the Habsburg dynasty, it certainly was an important entity of its own.
@@whynotstayhonest4706 Actually, I think the quote refers to the house of Austria, i.e. the Habsburg family. The Spanish Austrias (los Austrias españoles) ruled Spain for 200 years, but since they only married their German cousins they died from inbreeding.

Well, mercenary pikemen and men at arms are better than knights as their only job is to fight while knights manage their estates most of the time.
Well... french knights were the bests of the bests... even after 1415 and Agincourt they were considered as the best military unit back in these days. Otherwise, thinking their “only job is to manage their estates” is also wrong. 15th century is not 18th century and France have past almost 3 centuries fighting continuously... so be sure that it was absurd to fight knights with only mercenaries. You’re knight for a lifetime, while you’re mercenary for a while, and only for money and the appeal of greed.

With the centralization of state power in the late 15th century, king themselves can afford to field increasingly large and well-trained mercenaries.
The usefulness of Knight is fast declining in the second half of the 15th century (this time is 1477) and by the early 16th century, mercenaries armed with pike and arquebus replaced the knight as the most sought after troop.
Thomas Zhang agree on the point that chivalry’s influence was decreasing. However 1477 is a bit early, at this very time it was not yet acquired. The golden age of mercenaries start a bit after that... it is more during the reign of Charles VIII and Louis XII of France and the wars of Italy.
The real historical thing about mercenaries between Maximilian Von Habsburg and Louis XI de Valois was the rivalry in leagues and confederation in Switzerland (with the “Reisläufer”), which conclude of the creation of the Lansquenets companies. So 1477 was only a beginning in all that evolution, those notions were not yet acquired.
And by the way the war of the Burgundian succession was a French victory. Even the battle of Guinegatte in 1479 (the supposed Austrian victory) was more of a disaster for the Habsburg. They lost most men than the french and did not occupy any land. By the way, if France lost this battle it is because of the french bowman because french knights slaughter Burgundian cavalry and men at arms but archers did not manage to stop the pikemen.

3. The French "knights" (rather men-at-arms with noble origin) were more professional (called gendarmes d'ordonnance) from the middle of the 15th century and served in the standing army of France that called Compagnie d'ordonnance
which set up by Charles VII in 1439. By the way the French also used a large number of Swiss mercenary pikemen (Reisläufer) during the Italian War of 1494-98, and Germans (Landsknecht
) during the War of the League of Cambrai (1508-1516).
Would like to watch this with english subtitles. However it would have been better if the series focused on Maximilian's alter days, when he was crowned Holy Roman emperor, became a great patron of the arts, set up his court in Innsbruck and his construction of a powerful dynasty through marriages, art and legacy. Maximilian too was not that good looking according to the paintings we have of him..

I had hoped that they would continue the series (I mean the title sounds like something way bigger) but apparently they don't. That is why I think the title is not really fitting the series anymore since it excludes Mary completely and this is mostly her story.
But I would have loved to see more of his history too. And yeah, they usually tend to cast people that are more attractive but then again I also wouldn't know a German actor who looks a lot like the portraits of a young Maximilian. And most portraits show him as a middle-aged to old guy anyway what makes it even harder.

3 ans+ tard ! 2021 le film est passé 3 x fois a la TV FR mais il manque des éléments des scénes ont été supprimées dommage ... enfin je possède le DVD en VO mais cela ne ressemble en rien a la vie de Maximilien ni même le physique ,l,acteur est sympa mais a des années lumière de l,empereur a la grenade MAX encore une fois :ÉTAIT BLOND plutôt beau gosse ..et je l,aime toujours en 2021 .

Because there are no more. German series are most of the time limited mini-series with 2-6 episdoes which run between 60-90 minutes.
