Listening in Australia..what a wonderful interview. Am so glad that Giles has followed in the footsteps of his father. What a gift we have being able to hear The Beatles Revolver (Abbey Road, Let It Be, SGT Pepper and the White Album) reimagined audio wise for our times. A splendid time guaranteed for all 👍
Remember that Geoff Emerick the engineer came up with the "sound" and effects on this landmark album. He was probably as important as George Martin in the final version of the album.
You have this video titled as a remaster, but the whole point of this project is it is a REMIX. We have had remasters of The Beatles albums previously, cleaned up versions of the stereo mix. Giles has explained the difference very well before as in the differences between preparing a car for sale. Remastering is like cleaning the car's bodywork and upholstery to make it presentable, whereas remixing is like stripping the car down to it's component parts, cleaning and repairing each of those, and then rebuilding the car.
I think it’s worth while to remix the previous albums. I enjoyed the new Revolver remix. Although, some of the vocals did sound a bit weird on a few tracks. Other than that, I enjoyed it! If they can get the vocals sounding natural on “Rubber Soul” It would be a real treat!
I still have the original album on vinyl. It sounds great, the way I first heard it all those years ago. I guess for those who don't either have a copy or aren't familiar with it, they won't know the difference.
For me there are the original mono versions and the new remixes, aside from Abbey Road and Let It Be, which were mixed for stereo. Giles has done an amazing job.
Hearing this music in higher fidelity, with more separation of the instruments, with more clarity, ensures it will be enjoyed forever. It's a great mix. Not destructive at all.
@@Checobeep I don't know if this counts as "destructive" but remastering is done to change the sound from the original. Different emphasis on different instruments/sounds.
Demixing in its current technological state has been around since at least 2019 in the form of Deezer's Spleeter algorithm and Izotope's RX editing software. Peter Jackson's tech it a tinkered version of Spleeter, so he's late to the table with this despite what EMI and Jackson would like you to believe.
And the most funny part is, the big PR talk on the Hollywood Bowl remix in 2016 (!) was: "we can now finally do it justice thanks to the revolutionary demixing technology". And they've been using it as early as 2015 on the 1+ remixes, though sparsely.
@@disneyscott98 Oh it's much clearer on Revolver - granted. But that's not down to any real improvements in the capabilities of the software IMO. It's down to the fact that it was used on 4 individual multi-tracks, meaning the algorithm didn't have as much instrumentation to separate as, say, a mono or 2 track stereo recording. The actual effort levied on the software was relatively light, as it was only being asked to separate 2 or 3 instruments at a time / per each of the 4 tracks. Catch my drift?
So is there any official comment regarding the curious disappearance of the surround sound mixes? By "curious" I mean surrounded by the official wall of silence.
Hey Giles, why such heavy bass on these remixes, especially Abbey Road and Revolver? As a big fan of McCartneys playing, his bass no longer feels organic to the other instruments, instead it’s so loud it makes my speakers buzz (both in my home and in the car). For me, your fathers mono mixes, and his Abbey Road stereo mix, are still the best way to hear the Beatles as they were meant to be heard.
Originals Are The Best In All Music We’ve Lived In That Era & Still Listen To The Originals On Cd. Keep The Beatles In The 60s Era Which They Dominated ?
The title of this "Bringing the Beatles' back to life" is certainly wrong; they were never dead. What he has done is polish that which was already shining!!!!
Not worthwhile? Revolver was a far more worthwhile remix than the White Album, Let It Be and Abbey Road. It might even have been more worthwhile than Pepper. It was a fantastic remix. Now, whether it'll be worthwhile to remix Please Please Me is another question. But, Revolver was the most worthwhile remix of the bunch.
Please Please Me definitely needs a new stereo remix. The stereo mixes from 63 to 66 weren't great. They had some strange panning on the early stereo mixes.
Giles needs to get some more training in sound recording. Cranking up the bass and pushing back the percussion instruments ( cymbals, tambourines etc) kind of smothers the detail. The original still sounds superior to me.
So Paul and Ringo didn't think to mention any of this? Of course it's entirely possible that they have a drums and bass bias. Together, they represent the entire bottom end "punch" of The Beatles. Anyway, I quite like the punch, and I heard all of these records when they first came out. TomAto tomAHto.
It's not like Giles mixed these albums by himself in seclusion, and then released them to everyone's surprise. He had Sam Okell helping him. Plenty of ears (including Paul, Ringo, Yoko and Sean Lennon, and Olivia and Dhani Harrison) heard the mixes, and approved them to be released. If you like the original mixes, listen to them. No one is forcing you to switch to the new stereo mixes.
Lots of sad act anonymous middle aged men slagging off Giles remixing abilities. I suspect they're jealous because they think could have done it better.😂😂😂
At this stage, remixing/remastering Beatles album is Giles’s career and only thing that I’m sure is paying his bills. It would be difficult to say no more projects. Beatles name is still very lucrative.

It's actually not a remaster, it is a remix. Two very different things.
The Japanese auto industry is the best Beatle metaphor I've ever heard!
Clearly Giles inherited his Father's genius and wit 💕
That was a great interview - it stands out from all the rest. Well done, interviewer.
Remember that Geoff Emerick the engineer came up with the "sound" and effects on this landmark album. He was probably as important as George Martin in the final version of the album.
Thank you Giles and Peter Jackson's team, we are eternally grateful 💖🎶💖
I've bought Revolver 2022 remix recently. It's a great version. Thank you sir.

I just want to hear the rest of the albums now, especially Rubber Soul and Please Please Me.

why wasnt Geoff emerick involved with this...his name is not even MENTIONED
Geoff sadly passed away in 2018

Excellent interview
I'm put in mind re: not repeating themselves of Miles Davis's credo: "I love playing ballads, that's why I don't play ballads."
Remixing…not remastering.
Yeah, always drive me nuts that!
Since the Beatles’ music has never died, there is no need to bring it “back to life.”
Then your ears must have aged

To the people hating: why are you here?
great interview!
Love the Douglas Adams comparison
Is Times Radio not able to distinct between remaster and remix?
The anthology will be massive improvement in sound in 2024/5
I will listen to this under caution as Revolver has been remixed not remastered, there's an important difference.
Having said that it is well worth listening to 👍

7:02 Giles, if you do, start with the oldest albums because your father had already remixed "Help!" and "Rubber Soul".
So is there any official comment regarding the curious disappearance of the surround sound mixes? By "curious" I mean surrounded by the official wall of silence.
When will people know the difference between remix and remaster.
Giles remixes the Beatles albums.
The 2009 releases were remasters.
Many audiophiles don't know the difference.
The title of this post is highly insulting
One day someone will finally get the remastering right and we'll have exact digital copies of the original vinyl.
The Beatles have never shown a hint of not being alive. Also, Giles remixed the album. It's not a "remaster". Still, thanks for the interview 👍
Two of them have. They've done quite well at it.
1:49 I seem to recall Jackson's team actually built up on a previous research into sound separation done by the FBI.

Because Paul's still alive. lol

Insist on the original recordings from the 60's, and then say listen on CD. Lol

Yes. Keep them in the 1960's so no-one else can discover them. What a dumb thing to state!

Giles Martin REMIXED, NOT remastered The Beatles' albums.
Oh please , when you remix Rubber Soul make the vocals as clear as possible . Please don't muffle their voices .
Surely we've suffered enough?
Its remixed rather than remastered. Also, its needless and it actually doesn't sound all that good imo.
Who hired this guy?

It's too Late now but why did he have to poke he's insipid faced nose in this from the start, they didn't need remixing especially by him.

This YT video title is both whacked and inaccurate.
Revolver is the worst remix project. Tracks are nicely balanced but it's sonic garbage.
It sounds processed and sterile if Gilles can’t hear it he’s in the wrong business

He only has a job in the recording business because of his dad.
