I understand that when you have an album on Blu-ray audio, you lose the capability of jumping directly to any track using the remote control (as you can do in a CD-player). For that reason, I prefer to have all the bonus material on CD, rather than on Blu-ray. On a Blu-ray player you are restricted to skip only to the previous or the next track, but not to any other track of your choice.

I too am very happy with all the music, the new mixes are fascinating to listen to and the clarity of it means there’s things in there that I’ve not heard before which is great. I absolutely love the sessions. The sessions are always one of the main things for me about buying the boxes, and so I always wish that they would include more sessions. It annoys me that they Only use half the capacity of the session CDs when they could’ve fitted a lot more material on.

I agree on She Said, She said and some others. Martin sr. and the Beatles worked hard to create the sound they wanted, weaving every instrument and voice together. Martin jr. has worked hard to separate every noise. It's like taking a beautiful patterned pullover and producing four pristine balls of wool. For me this has largely been a problem of Beatles remixes since about 1995.

  • @zetmoon
    @zetmoon Год назад +2

The thing about all of these boxsets so far is the fact that the new stereomix and outtakes are all mixed and mastered digitally and then pressed on cd’s and vinyl records. The cd’s and especially the Blu-rays or DVD’s in previous sets are all almost perfect copies of the new and digital mastertapes. The vinyl records can’t better that. So for me, the way to go is to buy the digital sets and not the vinyl ones.
The only advantage of the vinyl sets is the full analog mono LP’s but they should be released seperately.
So I understand your point about buying the book twice but you don’t have to get both sets!
Especially with this one where the digital set is without a Blu-ray.

Great overview, Andrew. Agree with most of you criticism. However, even as a mad Beatles fan, I can't see myself buying BOTH the cd and vinyl box sets. What I did was buy the SINGLE vinyl album and the box set in cd. (I already have the 2014 mono version in vinyl). I always find that with the sessions/outtakes albums, the cds are more convenient in terms of jumping around the tracks. Keep up the good work.

I've not bought this box set yet, I grew up with the Beatles and loved everything they did, I'm so fortunate to be able to listen to all the old recordings with 2022 ears now, I will never pick faults with the remixes as we are so lucky to have the technology to be able to restore and bring back to life many missed takes, I now listen to the music, I'm not listening to whether that guitar was loud or drums too quiet, it's the music I was brought up with, and whatever it sounds like now is a real bonus to what I used to listen to it through, we must understand the tech they had then to record with and how to them it was good enough, then it's good enough for me.

Loved this reaction Andrew. I agree with you about offering the Vinyl and Cd's in the same package. I would have gone for that. As it is, I bought the CD box set in hopes that the vinyl set will come down in price eventually. First thing I listened to were the Sessions CD's. I also agree with you that Rubber Soul is not part one of the pair including Revolver. I've always thought that Rubber Soul had some of their best harmonies ever, but there are a few songs that sound like they could have been on Help! Run For Your Life, Think For Yourself and the obvious leftover Wait. Whereas the rest of that album was a step forward. In the end, Revolver stands alone as not only being very experimental but one of their most varied albums in their catalog. And it doesn't sound dated as does Sgt. Pepper.

I have been really impressed with the remixes. When all is said and done having all the albums in both Giles Martin remixes, and early uk mono pressings with a few extras (German true stereo of mmt etc) will be my go to for listening to Beatles albums.

Revolver is a seminal album and regarded in such high esteem by critics and fans, however I only own one Beatles' album, Please, Please Me. It was the group's first album, as I am sure you know, David, and it sounds like basically what it is, a rock band playing directly onto tape rather than overdubs on later Beatles' albums. The songs I Saw Her Standing There, Please, Please Me and Do You Want To Know A Secret are I think as well constructed songs as anything in the entire pop and rock music repertoire!

I think the lack of flaps on the mono is fine. I get why it seems to irritate a lot of collectors, but on the other hand it's a good way to tell the 2014 and 2022 apart, plus there were actually original '60s mono releases without the flaps outside of the UK. Maybe it's because I'm raised with such a release myself - Italian for some reason, with an all glossy cover on both sides (which I think looks the best) - but I also feel like it doesn't matter when all the discs and their sleeves are stored in the box anyways :)

On the subject of being eco friendly (and apologies fr leaving so many comments, I should probably have waited until the end and done 1 big comment rather than commenting after each section of the video lol), the biggest impact that music is having on the environment actually has nothing to do with physical media (vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Blurays, etc). The most damage is actually done by streaming services. Every major streaming service has to have multiple super computers and servers around the world that are on 24/7 and because there are so many people using them (not to mention because there are now so many different services), that actually has a larger carbon footprint than anything else. The most environmentally friendly music format is actually CDs as their small size means they can be shipped around the world in greater quantities and don't require as much raw materials to produce. Even vinyl with being an oil byproduct isn't as harmful to the planet as streaming.

I'm gonna be honest, I've been surprised at the amount of people complaining about the book being the same in both sets. But that's mainly because my mentality is "why would you get both?" I figured you having both was more for reviewing purposes, but over the past month or so I've become aware of just how many people do want all the formats. I guess enough people raised hell about the Sgt Pepper's and White Album vinyl sets being short-changed compared to the CD sets that they've started to make them match as much as possible. To the detriment of the CD editions imo. Having an identical book in both versions seems like a no-brainer until, again, it comes to the folks buying both!

As for what’s next, I wonder if we’ll start to see 60th anniversary box sets for the early albums, starting with Please Please Me in 2023. In that case, would they issue two box sets each year or would they combine both 1963 albums together into one box? Same goes for 1964 and 1965, of course. I bought the Amazon exclusive of the new remix on single lp because I wanted the turntable mat with the cover art. I've not had time to play it yet, although I've listened to a few things on RUclips which actually encouraged me to buy the set. From what I've heard of the remix, it does sound a bit clearer and fresher, but my main interest has been the sessions and those are incredible. The one negative that I have noticed though is that the print quality of the cover art on the remix looks a little dark compared to previous releases, I think it was Vinyl Rewind that said it kinda looks like a photocopy, and I can see that, but I think what's probably happened is that they've turned the contrast up in Photoshop. Apparently Klaus' original artwork is missing and so they would have had to use a backup which is unfortunate.

I think a general tactic with remixes lately is that the opportunity is taken to make slight cover art changes, even if just in the boldness of the colours.
Personally I don't mind that too much, could be argued that reflects the change in the "colour" of the remixed music.

Hi Andrew, i'm a producer and a recording artist. Now to the point, and that is that i still don't understand the people that buy LP's. The Beatles and other artists didn't record the extra annoying sound of vinyl in the studio, so why buy an LP? I hear you say because it sounds better, more dynamic and so on. The only pro i can make up is the record sleeve. Now my advise, ...listen to the BluRay versions of other Beatle recordings than you hear what The Beatles heard in the studio. It will rock your socks off ! (lol) Cheers!

Agree with the review - thanks for posting - but I disagree with the rather over the top disgust about the same book inclusion in both formats cd/vinyl - they shouldn’t have to anticipate that people will buy it twice in both formats? That - frankly- is your lookout. But having the option of both formats in one box set is a good idea and if their new box sets match in size this would work well. Personally I have a bigger beef with the way the box is back to front (like the let it be set) and it’s made me wonder if the idea is to have the spines of the book and the music sleeve facing outwards on a shelf? Love your posts - keep em coming!

I got the box containing the book, the 2022 remix, and the Czech Republic re-cut mono pressing that is hailed as "better"than the German pressing from 2014. To be frank, I didn't hear much of an improvement between the 2 monos. Unfortunately I don't have a 2 turntable DJ setup so that I could do an A/B test, just my hearing. The book and the Remix LPs were superb, I love them! But the problem was that the Mono LP was pressed off center and was warped. And for $200 this is unacceptable . I returned it.

I’m with you on the Rubber Soul and Revolver not being the part 1 & 2 of each other. I really feel Rubber Soul is the perfect end to a folksy/country trilogy of The Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul. Those three albums really blend into each other perfectly. Capitol in the US actually made several records crisscrossing songs from those albums and it works. But on Yesterday & Today with Help, Rubber Soul and Revolver era tracks, the Revolver ones sound out of place. But those songs would blend in great with Sgt. Pepper era ones.

Those US albums, while not definitive for me, offer an interesting alternate listening experience. You Like me too Much and I Don't Want to Spoil the Party on the same record makes sense. I've Just Seen A Face ending and Norwegian Wood following works well too. However the US Revolver just doen't cut it for me and is the main reason I adhere to the UK tracklists

Nice informative video Andrew on your review & take on the new Giles Martin Revolver mix & original mono version on cd & vinyl box sets, I agree with you on the missing Blu ray & having to get stuck w/the book twice. My main comment is I purchased the 2 cd deluxe version for the new 2022 mix & the session outtakes highlights (Unfortunately I will stream listen to the remaining outtakes that I currently don’t have). I want to say overall the Giles mix is very good however I wanted to compare the 1987 George Martin Revolver stereo remaster cd to the new the mix. I listened to the 1987 cd on my 1986 Sansui stereo system & it sounded great the Beatles were not meant to be heavy bass sounding -in the Giles mix. And yes Paul wanted more bass during the Paperback Writer 1966 session- but not to where it buries the other instruments either. “I want to tell you” “She said She said” sounds brighter Ringo’s drums & Georges lead guitar are right up front too on the 87 cd. “Tomorrow never knows” sounded nice /clear & John Lennon’s vocals were front & center. Sorry I didn’t hear the same clarity in the 2022 mix. I know I’m in the minority on this but the Beatles sound is the proof, point being you don’t need high end stereo system either. Whoever has listened to the Beatles music for years as I have knows how their music sounded on record. I’m not taking away from Giles & team but a few of the songs are not as bright & some instruments are buried or muffled in the mix in spite of the Peter Jackson new demixing process-(who I do respect as a Beatles fan). And that’s not even considering the original vinyl UK mixes which are the best sounding. “And your Bird can sing” wasn’t much better plus the missing faint bell sound at the end of the song is gone, the 87 remaster is clarity clear & complete. My 87 cd was pressed in W.Germany & the others I have are UK & Japan presses not sure if the European pressing were better sounding. “ I’m only sleeping” on the 1987 cd you can hear John’s jangling rhythm guitar clearly & the backwards guitar bit are up front. Now “Taxman” sounds good on Giles mix -again the bass & volume has been pumped up too, the 87 cd you have to raise the volume but you also get McCartneys heavy thumping bass. “Dr.Robert” & “Eleanor Rigby” sound very good on Giles mix, but “Good Day Sunshine” not as good as 87 remaster cd especially the ending of the song on Giles mix McCartneys vocal did not blend in as well. I thought the Revolver outtake sessions cd sounded brighter, this is just my opinion & you may want to compare them also. I appreciate the effort & work Giles Martin has done on these box sets, thanks.

My only minor nitpick is that the CD versions of the album didn’t put the singles on the end of the LP. The CD EP sorta feels like a waste. At least with the vinyl EP, it’s a totally different size and therefore feels more warranted as a standalone part.
But for the CD editions, they should’ve put the singles on the end of the respective Remix and Mono LPs. Leaning more into convenience and portability. Not to mention they’d easily fit on each considering they can hold 80 minutes.

I have the 2 CD version. The alternate takes are excellent but why did they only put 39 minutes of music on disc two?? They had room for 40 more minutes of alternate recordings. Well we know why. The record companies are greedy. I paid almost $30 for this set. In fact they could have released a one disc version with the original album followed by the
extra recordings making up disc two.

Good video, agree with most of your points. If I could just share some of my thoughts,
regarding the blu ray- it’s an absolute shame they suddenly decided not to include it after being part of all the previous sets. And for such a b.s. sounding reason that it wouldn’t be ready in time. In time for what? This set didn’t come out anywhere near the anniversary so not in time for that. Since the atmos mixes are done I would guess they could have waited another month or two and included a blu ray, but then I guess what they really mean is it wouldn’t be ready in time for the holiday season. Don’t they realize the fans are going to buy these whenever it comes out? Don’t sacrifice quality just to rush release it. I know Giles said maybe in future it will be released, but I agree with you, I can’t see Apple going back and releasing a standalone blu ray of this after the fact. But what would be an awesome gesture if goodwill, on the next box set (hopefully Rubber Soul, but whatever it winds up being) include a blu ray for that set and as a bonus include the Revolver tracks as well. Similar to how they included the original mono mixes of RS and Help on the ‘09 cds. I’m sure they will find a way to justify raising the price even more, but the simple inclusion of the Revolver tracks would go a long way in pleasing a lot of fans I think.
The packaging- I agree as much as I love all the books in these sets, I like to listen on both cd and vinyl, as I’m sure plenty of fans do. So it is awkward having two copies of the same book. I really like your idea of a super deluxe set with both formats. A lot of artists offer this, why not the Beatles. Even if it will cost the same or close to the same amount as buying both sets individually, it does seem a more convenient option. Hopefully they consider that next time.
As far as the ep is concerned, at least on the cd box, I still think it is a waste of a disc that could easily have been tacked on to the sessions cd’s. That will always be a head scratcher. It works much better on vinyl though and I don’t mind the extra disc there, but they really could have done a better job packaging it instead of just shoving it inside the gatefold of the sessions ep. What the hell? Give it it’s own little 12 inch wallet card or something to hold it in the box instead of doing that!
Aside from those gripes, I am grateful for any new Beatles stuff and the audio content itself is great. It’s just small things that could make these sets even better. Hopefully they take fan feedback into account next time.
And let us never let them forget they promised us the original Let it Be!

Andrew, Wonderful assessment yet again. Personally I'm not concerned with the packaging, book etc. though I understand the importance of that to so many others. I'm all about the music content, and my only issues are (as mentioned before):
    1) For the CD version, the extra "EP" doesn't really make sense. Those 4 songs could have gone elsewhere in any of the other CDs. But that's an extremely minor issue for me.
    2) Too many of the sessions songs were recycled from Anthology 2. I know you said that might be because Anthology was too generous with session outtakes. However, while Sgt/White/Abbey reused a few Anthology cuts, it wasn't a significant percentage of the bonus material. On Revolver, it feels like about 1/4 to 1/3 of studio sessions were previously available. I felt like Giles could have dug a little deeper to give us some new versions.
Still, overall I'm happy that we got this, especially since a year ago we all assumed we might never get a Revolver remix. Thank heavens for Peter Jackson helping find the technology to make this possible.

They didn't use any demixing technology with the guitars on She Said She Said. The overdubbed guitar was already on its own track, all Giles did was separate the two tracks on either side of the stereo field. It was still a mistake to do so - the extra guitar is obviously supposed to complement the other and does not work when left on its own.

I think the key point is that John's not-really-a-song doesn't mention submarines.... Personally I've absolutely always figured that John had a significant hand in Yellow Submarine because (a) the lyric sounds more like John than Paul, (b) the tune sounds more like John than Paul, and (c) I cannot imagine John ever letting the band record the song, let alone getting so heavily involved in the recording, if he hadn't had a hand in writing it.

I would content this new fragment is clear evidence that the melody portion of YS came from John. It’s clearly from an early home tape, which John produced for many of his proto-songs - see the countless bootlegs. Until the new release everyone thought it was almost entirely a “Paul song”. Now we know it was much more of a joint/group effort than we thought. Shouldn’t be too surprising. It was a collaboration like so many of their songs in this middle period. This is a similar to how tracks like A Day in the Life, We Can Work It Out came together. That’s all anyone should be suggesting. You can’t say it was a “John song” or a “Paul song”.

      @4-dman464 Год назад

Interesting, but I think PM came awake with the chorus according to Beatles Anthology, the impetus for the song but not the opening...
Studio sessions for 'Yellow Submarine' show JL trying to find opening lyrics, the way he always did, by repeating first thing that came into his head till free association navigated the song. (You also hear JL advising George to do that in 'Get Back' when GH struggles to find lyrics to 'Something'.) We hear:-
'In the town where I was born/ No one cared, no one cared' over & over. Haunting like JL's first solo album. From this we will get:
'lived a man who sailed to sea.'
The man who sailed to sea was Fred Lennon. There's a trail of abandonment in this free association from 'no one cared'. Fred Lennon came back into JL's life out of the blue in February 1966. JL mentions this to Maureen Cleave in her famous article for Evening Standard, 4 March 1966. JL was ambivalent about having his Dad back in his life, surely on JL's mind at the time of composing 'Yellow Submarine' in spring 1966.
JL's free association launches from the merchant navy and Fred Lennon, who had just told him of his life in their catch-up in February 1966.
The submarine becomes the idyllic environment JL was denied as an infant. Every one of us has all we need. Surrealism as escapism. That's my take anyway. Julia says I'm 'a conspiracy theorist,' but I bet all the books are telling it this way within 10 years once these Revolver Sessions circulate. Fascinating.

Something very important is missing in your rating of the vinyl box it's the pressing's quality. I bought twice (Amazon) this edition and twice the Czech pressing was very bad for one or more disks. In the last I bought the mono version is warped therefore inaudible for most of it. Quality control is 0 out of 10 Apple-Parlophone is making fun of us. Fun fact (?): I received the first box on 27th of October (1 day earlier than the official release date) but the box was badly shipped and had stains and scratches because it was simply wrapped in a box too big for it with no protection at all…I returned it to Amazon for an exchange (for this reason and the bad pressing of 2 disks of the set) but once again in the exchanged box the pressing was bad as previously mentioned. Giles Martin made a great job which I enjoy very much (10/10). I still have in good condition my original Revolver I bought in August 1966. It's good and justified to have both editions... if we can get a proper pressing for the latest version. Thank you for the excellent review.

Now, I've only just watched this (2 days late) and you are probably aware by now of the quality control topic which I am going to add. I also bought the limited edition Stereo vinyl box with the slipmat. Incredibly, on BOTH spines, they have mispelt Revolver as Revoler...!! And, the box set with the t-shirt bundle, and the box set with the Tote Bag bundle, ALSO have the same misspelling!! All three sets were made in the USA 🇺🇸
    This is beyond belief...
It's an incredible insult to a band who specialised in giving the paying public only the best when together. At first I thought I might have had some sort of rarity, but nope, it's everywhere, and now these sets are being snapped up in case they recall them and run a second printing.
Apple need to roll a few heads I think. This MUST change before Rubber Soul etc.

The lack of a blu-ray was a big dis-incentive for me, I was really looking forward to an HD audio copy, but I know not having the new mono pressing will irk me in years to come.

One thing that is never mentioned in reviews is the actual speed of rain on the seasons discs. Its interesting that they slowed the tape down for the official release. I always thought it was recorded that way

@@darthwarren4599 Cheers. Only correction I would make is that I didn't know then that Paul's bass was overdubbed later on to the slowed down version.

Hi Andrew, I have not bought the set, either on CD or vinyl, I am waiting a while. My questions are about how similar or different would the contents of the blu-ray disc and the digital audio collection (12 mins 06 seconds) have been if they existed? How might each have varied from the other in content? Do you think that the work for such releases was done? If it were will it see the light of day? If the blu-ray or digital download did exist as a stand alone releases then with both of them one item I would expect to see on them given the space on the disc or with the download is a digitised version of the big book.....

I would expect a Blu Ray would have had hi res stereo remix, probably hi res mono mix, hopefully hi res sessions, a 5.1 of the stereo remix. Not sure whether it would be possible to fit the Atmos mix on to the disc, not sure how much data that would take.

My solution to the book issue is to sell it separately. (And not in the box) If I buy this it will be the electronic set (to own not stream). But would love to own the book.
Producing a vinyl&cd box would probably not be economic. The two versions should suit the vast majority of people.

I have tentatively thought of doing this. I doubt I'll ever actually do it, but it is a tempter.

@@AndrewDixonMusic I have the Imagine and POB books, but they are not the ones from the set - overlap a lot but not the details on tracks I think.

If the new mono vinyl mix was taken from the original master tapes it can only be different due to the equipment used in the transfer if they used the original mastering notes. The tape recorder for playback would have better tape heads and the cutting equipment would be improved.

I can honestly say I agree with you 100%. As you know of me, I was looking forward so much to listening to this album in 5.1 But hugely disappointed that there wasn't one. I read that it was coming. And secondly. When I opened both boxes (same day) to find the exact Book inside the CD Box too. I now hope there maybe a Third release of the Blu-Ray. (But i won't hold my breath). Is this down to Paul, Apple or EMI? So will we get RUBEER SOUL or a Paul's Archive Collection next. John's Sometime In New York. Only time will tell. There was one time i stopped buying other artists or bands. But I've got a Second Hand Record Shop in my High Street. Spend most of my Saturdays now going through the shelves. A Sheer delight
