People forget that Queen Victoria married a German.
The Mountbattens changed their name to seem more British from the original German Battenberg.
The Royal family name was changed to Windsor only after the 1st World War began (1917) from the original Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
There can be no ignoring that the British Royal Family have strong German bloodlines and that King Edward VIII was a weak spoilt brat playboy king who thought he could use his people as cannon fodder in a war in order to have a woman (who clearly didn't respect him) AND retain control of Britain - even if his own privilege continued as a result of Britain becoming subjugated by Germany.

This is old news for the Brits. Edward is despised, his brother was ten times the man he was, and we were lucky to have had such a figurehead to help hold us together during the dark days. As for Wallace Simpson, while she was probably fanticising about living in a swastika draped Buckingham Palace and calling herself "Queen", the Queen mum had grabbed an army rifle and was practicing shooting rats. I heard her logic was if you can hit the small rats the big German ones would be easy. Interesting that George VI saw himself as "a simple sailor" and didn't want the job, and his daughter Queen Elizabeth II just wanted a normal country life and didn't want the job. Both father and daughter did their duty.

The episode in which Edward asks Queen Elizabeth if he can come home and take a job in England, Prince Philip was adamant that she not allow that to happen. He had her consult with Tommy LaSelles (spelling?). At the end of the episode, before the closing credits, many photos were shown of Edward in Germany with Hitler.

Ha ha, I wouldn't take The Crown as TV Wiki ! The detail of the The Crown is about as historically accurate as Mel Gibson's movie Braveheart. As best, it's a dramatized fiction aimed for a generally less than informed (or well educated) US audience with it's script prepared specifically for the Agenda the programes Producers want to push, a sort of serialized Oprah Winfrey Show interviewing Mehan Markle on steroids. The programme's aim is to make as much money as possible for it's Producers so accuracy is always going to take 2nd Stage to "Drama" written/contrived by a Screenwriter, on orders from the Producer. Just think of the Movie, "Jesus of Nazareth". The outline of the story and characters is true but everything else about it is man-made/ invented.
      Enjoy the fiction!!

And ordered is not to strong a word, he was ordered there, if he had refused it would have been interesting to see what Churchill would have done, perhaps trial for treason. Though lets be honest as a leader in war, and a difficult war, he could not afford to be trialling the brother of the king, a former king for treason. Edward thought he would be a "moderniser" in the Royal family - usually a bad sign.. his relationship with Wallis Simpson was the biggest problem. apart from being a divorced socialite she had a lot of friends who were basically fascists and like many in the "smart set" of the 1930's were quite admiring of fascist Italy and national socialist Germany... he must have been sore about being ousted from the throne. and he spent his life then as his wife's simp. a bit like 2 other ppl we know today. your author is though quite wrong... the German plan to invade France in 1940 followed largely the 1914 one. Hitler was not keen on it but not yet confident enough to overrule the general staff. however in early 1940 a Luftwaffe aircraft crashed landed in neutral Belgium - one of the officers on board was carrying the battle plans.. although it was unclear whether the plans were revealed, Hitler used this crash to change the plans - one Manstein had drawn up - which were implemented in May 1940. everyone knew the Maginot Line would be bypassed, it was never intended to be an impenetrable defence... the French always intended it to delay the Germans until a field army arrived ..

Inbreds often like other inbreds. Hitler's parents were first cousins and European Royals suffered from many diseases of inbreeding due to an only recently lifted requirement that they could only marry those of blue blood.
Only Mixed Breeds with character see the Inbred for what he is and despise him. Geographical isolation = social isolation = lack of diverse genetic composition = various forms of inbreeding = people with gross flaws they and their fellow countrymen of similar stock cannot often even see until it's too late.
The Nazi Regime was extremely concerned with being a pure Aryan race. Their entire ideology was founded on restricting the influx of different genetics into their people (destroying the Slavic Race, expellng Jews). As usual, this often leads to an early, untimely and rapid collapse, and has occurred before in other similarly self-constrained societies such as the Egyptians, Roman Empire, Spanish, French and British Empires, the Japanese.
Superpowers (USA, China, Russia) and powerful races (Jews) all share one thing in common - great genetic diversity. Enouigh different people to be able to navigate through rapidly changing circumstances. One of the least genetically diverse people on Earth were Native Americans, and they were almost totally wiped out within a few hundred years of contact with Europeans, even though they numbered in the many millions. The Jewish Race is at the juncture of Europe, Africa and Asia, and contains a substantial amount of genes from all three races.

They both hated the constraints of their privileged life but loved the luxury. A couple of BUMS. An American woman would be far less aware of the nuances of deserting the family than a suitable match among the aristocracy. Good to hear that someone is actually still teaching real history. The Maginot forts were a sop by default to both France's cultivation of the fallacious legend of Verdun and the appalling losses France sustained in WW1. Two more diametrically tangential motivations to a strategy of defence would be impossible to find. A case of in the absence of knowing how to fight a future war in a post-war world of rapid technological development, double down on the strategy of static defence whilst ignoring its attendant toll in life. Quite insane really when it was Napoleon himself who so correctly observed that the the army which stays within its defences is doomed to defeat as well as that the army which tries to defend everything will in the end lose everything. My teachers of history are those who I remember with the greatest fondness of all as with those magnificent classroom debates that we had. What's past is prologue.

The French didn't want to build a line of fortifications along their border with their old ally Belgian for fear of offending them, (not to mention the additional cost). When Belgian signaled it would be neutral in future European wars, France considered extending their forts to the Channel coast, but time and finances were not on their side. On the other hand, France knew the Maginot Line could never keep the Germans out permanently. It was only supposed to slow the Germans until France could mobilize its forces completely. But in the event, the French were defeated in a matter of weeks, not months.

It’s not like Edward was the only person who knew that you could walk around the maginot line! Anyone who looked at a map could deduce that! Do we honestly think that having a 1 day tour as a visiting dignitary left him privy to secret information that the Germans didn’t already have? The idea that the germans changed their war plan based on the superficial observations of some brainless aristocrat’s with zero military experience is laughable. I think Guderian and his contemporaries were quite able to manage without input from the royal family. Edward may well have had Fascist sympathies, like many aristocratic Englishmen at the time and he may well have been a traitor but there was no value in his observations on the maginot line. I think this guy is just trying to sell books.

    • @timrussell9869

Yes, the Germans had done exactly the same thing in WW1. Then it was called the Schlieffen plan. They carried it out then. Any student of WW1 would know that. I learnt about it in secondary school history classes. The stupidity of the Maginot line was that it stopped before it reached the coast. As far as visiting Hitler, it was before the war. The whole world visited Germany for the 1936 Olympic games.

    • @josephfreedman9422
      @josephfreedman9422 2 года назад +8

The Maginot line was not a substitute for fighting but made defense along the frontier with Germany easier. The German invasion through the Ardennes was not discounted but the French expected it would take much longer to execute. I do agree that Edward had fascist sympathies and that the Germans (after the fall of France) hoped to use him, but I don't know that we can say more than that. His views were not at all unusual in his class for those years. Much of the dissatisfaction with him rose from his self-centeredness and immaturity, in my view.

    • @faithlesshound5621

@@josephfreedman9422 Fascist sympathies were widespread in England before the war. The Daily Mail had a headline "Hooray for the Blackshirts" before Mosley overdid the street violence and they had to row back.
They were arguing for a peace treaty with Hitler well into the war. The "Cliveden Set" had similar views.
The Morning Post (which later merged with the Daily Telegraph) serialised "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and then re-published it in book form.
And look at the decoration of certain town halls (e.g. Leeds and Stoke-on-Trent) built in the 1930s. They have "fasces" (bundles of rods with an axe inside) all over the plasterwork. The poet Philip Larkin's father, who was Town Clerk (in modern terms the Chief Executive) of Leeds City Council used to fly a swastika flag from his office window before the war.

The notable difference between the women, though, is that Wallis, The Duchess of Windsor, was never granted the HRH style, while Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, was bestowed the HRH style. Meghan should be stripped off her royal status and be downgraded into a non-royal one and be referred to as Her Grace, the leser, inferior style Wallis was given despite her husband being being born a blood prince of the United Kingdom, former Prince of Wales, who later became the former King of Engald and Emperor of China, and subsequently as The Duke of Windsor after abdicating the throne to marry the love of his life after the Parliament refused to let their monarch marry a divorcee and allow her to be his Queen Consort, mainly because all monarchs of England not only get crowned but also annointed as Head of the Church of England and its Supreme Governor- Defender of the Faith. Edward was a very naïve man, but at the time when he was infatuated with Wallis Simpson, the general public in Britain were beginning to dislike Wallis Simpson due to adulteress affairs, which turned to hatred after the abdication, but in hindsight it was Wallis Simpson who saved the Monarchy, because if Edward had remained King the outcome of the second world war would have been a lot different for Britain. Thankfully at the time leading up to the abdication, the then Prime Minister Baldwin could see what was going to happen, but equally which is generally forgotten it was the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Cosmo Lang who put the knife into Edward VIII, saying under the laws of the Church of England he could not marry Simpson and remain King, hence the abdication.

The Germans always knew they could drive around the defenses if they had enough oil and war material to make the forest offenses.
The Versailles Treaty embargoed Germany from the raw materials needed to once again establish and support a front in France. The line was built with that on mind, as even embargoed they could eventually make a straight push as they had done twice in recent decades.
The USSR never signed the treaty, so they sold Hitler anything he wanted, and struck a pact to split up Poland and other border nations.
They didn't need a royal to tell them the obvious. However in May 1940 there were several landed elites, MPs, and nobles in Britain that wanted a peace with Hitler, as long as they kept their lands and titles. Italy was going to negotiate the French style surrender, until Churchill and the navy got the troops off the beaches in far larger numbers than expected while the French army held the back door.
When the war was over, Britain and her American cousins allied with West Germany and Japan to hold back communism....wasn't that the pre war thinking of Edward and his golf set?

@T.R. Imperial royal family branches have been intertwined with Russia in the form of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Duke of York and Queen Anne for many centuries, though many of them were damaged during the murder of Czar Nicholas II in 1918.
Each of the two monarchs is first descended from their mothers, both Danes who were royal siblings. Both the monarch and the prince were made to marry by their mothers. Their first cousin, Prince Alexander V of Russia, was a grandchild of Queen Victoria, as were Prince George V of England.

They changed their name in 1917. King George V made an official announced and permanently altered his family name on July 17, 1917, but what led to the decision? Until this date, at the height of World War I, the Royals were known as the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas. But then the slaughter of 18 children in London, at the hands of German bombers, prompted George to adopt Windsor instead.
