  • Step by Step!
    In today's video, I'll be showing you how to bench test an ATV starter.
    Disconnect your battery before doing any electrical work!
    Then disconnect the starter cable at the solenoid (It should be the black wire) then you can unbolt your starter from the ATV housing.
    Once the starter is on the work bench, you can either use a battery, or a battery booster to test it. Either way, you'll need a 12volt source of power!
    I use an Eliminator 12v battery booster, because I can hook everything up 1st, and then flip the switch to provide the voltage necessary to engage the starter.
    If you follow the steps in this video, it can potentially help you diagnose electrical issues, by what's known as a "Process of Elimination".

    You should've checked the brushes inside the starter. My starter did the same, when taken out to test it spin freely but under load it won't spin. So I opened it and the brushes we're gone so ordered a new one.

    Eliminators beware when buying used ATV's either the seller is having difficulty getting parts or there is something seriously wrong with the ATV, it is a rare day when you can say i got a great deal on this quad! Nice simply video too bad for your customer there was the internal gear issue.

    Our shop mainly work on Honda (we used to be a Honda dealer before the genius's at Honda went to power house) .. We turn Chinese ATV's away because tech info and parts are nearly impossible to get .. LOL .. The sprag clutch is probably bad in that engine ...

    Hey. I have a 150cc gy6. I was having issues with it starting. Replaced solenoid Then the starter. I was good to go. However now two days later it acts like it wants to go but just not engaging. Then at times it will turn over and run great. Any thoughts.

      electrical issue. Check ground and all wires. Might need to switch the startermotor wire to a new one. Since it worked recently.

    For me, mine doesnt turn over, or click. The battery is fine because its charged completely and everything turns on. Should i just get a new starter or what?

    sounds like to me that a few of the teeth on the flywheel are broken or stripped. that maybe the reason that you hear
    clanking in the engine case.
    best thing to do is to open it up and replace the broken part. then sell it to a super rich guy.

    How much voltage Should be going to the starter, with a multimeter I'm getting 4 on mine

    • @EliminatorPerformance

      12v-13v is normal, you have a bad connection. Look for corrosion.

      @@EliminatorPerformance I just replaced the starter along with the wire connecting it from the solenoid, and when I try to see voltage or resistance from the solenoid while holding the starter I'm getting -600 for resistance and nonsensical numbers for voltage, could that be a solenoid problem, me not understanding a multimeter or something else that you may know

    • @ChillBrass
      @ChillBrass 4 года назад

      I just checked resistance from battery to solenoid, spark plug to solenoid, starter to solenoid and the 2 clip ends and all read around 004, so I'm not sure what my issue is

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  4 года назад

      @@ChillBrass sounds like the solenoid has resistance built up in it and it's weakening the voltage to starter. Watch the video I link below, and test resistance between the 2 posts when the solenoid is powered. ruclips.net/video/h_vy7DERing/видео.html

      @@EliminatorPerformance just checked resistance between the 2 while powered and got from 70-100. Should I order a new solenoid? Also thank you so much for your help.

    It's a cheap quad and the parts are also dirt cheap. Don't say there's nothing you can do about it... you CAN order replacement parts from China or a american distributor of the brand.

    its spinning has nothing to do with wiring or the starter
