i heard they were supposed to be the first NCT unit to debut back then, but SM changed their mind last minute and thought that it would be cool to add hoverboards for their choreo, so they started to practice from 0 again with it. i remember seeing the fansite pictures when they were just debuted. some of them had bruised knees as the result of their hard work practicing the hoverboard dance. i just started to get interested in NCT Dream in 2018, it was GO/NCT 2018 Empathy era, but Chewing Gum was the one that pulled me in 😂 theyre like the coolest group of kids ive ever seen in my entire fangirling life 😂😂😂
Yeah, Dream said it and they were very sad when they heard they debut was postponed. But they were happy with the result because it was such an iconic one with the hoverboard
"Chewing Gum" is NCT-Dream's debut song, so you're right, they are very young in this MV. Mark is the oldest at 17, so he is the leader of this sub-unit and Jisung is the youngest at 14. NCT-Dream includes Mark (17), RenJun, (16), Jeno (16), Haechan (16), Jaemin (16), Chenle (14) and Jisung (14). SM originally created this sub-unit with the idea that If they had a trainee that they felt was ready to debut even though they were really young, they would start out as a member of NCT-Dream. They were the cute babies of the group who were learning the ropes and honing their skills because they are young, but they are also some of the most talented because they debuted way sooner than a lot of trainees. Jisung is the main dancer of NCT-Dream and one of the best dancers in NCT, so he's the one with the dance breaks most of the time. He is actually known for his popping and locking skills and for the fact that he is sort of a mini Taemin. Jisung pretty much took the exact same path as an SM trainee as Taemin did and Taemin says he sees a lot of his younger self in Jisung. Both Jisung and Taemin became trainees around age 11 and they both debuted at age 14, they both have similar dancing styles and they both pretty much sacrificed their childhood to become an Idol, etc. Fun fact: Although Mark is young here, he is the same age as he was in NCT-U's "The 7th Sense" and in NCT-127's "Fire Truck" -- which were each sub-unit's debut songs. All three of these songs and MVs came out within a couple of months of each other in 2016. But because of the different concepts and styles of the songs, we get a chance to see how versatile Mark really is as an artist and how he can embrace all sides of himself -- he changes up his style depending on which group he is with at the time.
The guy who is playing the school's head student or leader in this MV, is not a member of NCT -- as far as I know he is just an actor. (He's not supposed to be much older than them because he is also a student.) If you have seen any Korean cartoons or anime-style comics, etc. the character he plays is very much exactly how the antagonist or bully/bad guy character in school K-dramas looks like and acts. This is very onbrand and what most Korean viewers would recognize as the character the main characters (Dreamies) would be fighting against in the story. So it's not as weird as you might think. I kind of think of the story in their "Chewing Gum" MV as a live-action version of a comic or cartoon, so the over the top, exaggerated expressions and cuteness, etc. is supposed to mimic that style of story and the whole aesthetic of the MV is supposed to have the look and feel of a comic/anime/manga/webtoon, etc. The members of NCT-Dream are actually even more impressive with those hoverboards then what you saw. They spent a while working with them and building up their skills. You should see some of the tricks they can do on them. Check out this video that shows just how skilled they are with a hoverboard, ruclips.net/video/9RF5sI0MLWk/видео.html. If you think this choreography was cool, just wait until you see their tricks. They can even ride two hoverboards at the same time, with one foot on each board and do handstands on them, etc. As you saw with "Chewing Gum," they started out with a very young and cute concept that fit the fact that they were all teenagers. But over the years their style and concept has grown and evolved like the members of the group. The whole point of the song and the concept of the group is to appeal to fans in their age group. Kpop is full of young groups who are trying to appeal to an older, more mature audience. So I think SM Entertainment was pretty clever to created this sub-unit as a way to appeal to a younger demographic. Why not market music to a younger audience? I think it's kind of refreshing that SM decided to start NCT-Dream out with more of a family-friendly concept because all the members were actually still children.
So adorable 🥹 it makes me so nostalgic~ Like I saw them even before their debut they were really babies. They were really children so yeah it fit them. The thing is they were really young so they spent their whole life in front of Camera. Now they are all adult but mentally they are still the same at some point 🤣. at that time, yes they still went to high school for some of them. A month ago they brought back Chewing gum with hoverboard during the dream show 3 Encore, we were all crying 😅 they are still the only boy group who is able to dance on stage with Hoverboard
I really love the fact that NCT Dream had such a bright and young debut song. They were making music for their peers and younger and there should be fun, well made songs you can enjoy when you are 13. But more than that, I love that they were not pitched too old too fast just to sell albums. (Dream started strong, had an iconic song with amazing choreo and built a very loyal fanbase over years. And they are still growing and evolving as all artists do.) It creeps me out when 14 year olds are making music to appeal to adults...
Kpop itself is filled with other nationalities besides Korean...if you look at Nct alone, look at 127 Johnny, an American (trained for 9years) and Wish Yuushi(trained for 7 years)a Japanese, who comes over to Seoul SM, to do their summer training...that was why these two hv long training years bcos they come over during their summer holidays before joining SM proper...that is what i call dedication and perseverance! Yuushi from Wish came over at the age of 12...the same age Taemin from SHINee join the Company! so to be a good Kpop idol is never an easy thing...so kudos to them for all the hard work! So in Dream there is their vocalist Chenle and Renjun from China...Nct is very global in the sense that they hv members of different nationalities.
ngl i vibe to chewing gum sm like its my jam even tho i dont listen to kid's stuff. also you should react to MMTG ep 198 it tells how dream's discography reflects their growth. ts a very nice and fun interview. btw they had learn how to ride hoverbaords and the whole choreo within a month after their initial choreo was cancelled
According to Renjun, since him and chenle don't understand much korean back then, an employee of sm told them (I forgot the name of the person he mentioned) that while singing Chewing Gum they should just smile and pretend happy.

NCT Dream is supposed to be cute because it's focused on young audience. And the members were 14-16 years old in this debut

11:54 jaemin was the best at hoverboard he can even do an handstand on it 😭
as someone about the same age as them. Stanning them back then till now really felt nostalgic it's like having a group that grew up together with you.
jisung (the youngest) became a trainee in 2013 at like 10/11 years old, so he actually has spent over half of his life at sm entertainment
They have a live performance with the Hoverboard
They also presented them as adults at their concert.
