- The Royal Choral Society has performed Handel's Messiah on Good Friday at the Royal Albert Hall every year since 1876. The RCS filmed their performance on 6 April 2012 by kind permission of the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This clip features the glorious Hallelujah Chorus with the choir performing under the baton of their Music Director Richard Cooke. Students from the City of Lodon School for Girls joined the choir for this performance.. For further information on forthcoming RCS concerts please see www.royalchoralsociety.co.uk.

"A standing tradition: Audience members usually rise to their feet when the famous "Hallelujah" chorus begins. Supposedly King George II was so moved during the London premiere of the Messiah that he stood and then everyone else in the theater followed so as not to offend him."

My grandfather just passed away this evening. I was at the hospital with him, by his bedside, shortly after he passed. We had some music playing next to him, and when everyone stepped out of the room to give me a few minutes with him to say my final goodbyes, an instrumental version of masterpiece started playing (I've always loved Handel's _Messiah_ ). I interpreted it as God's little "wink" to me that all is well, and that my grandpa, with all those who die in the Lord, is victorious, and will now eternally enjoy the presence of the One who reigns forever.
I love you, grandpa, and can't wait to see you again one day. ❤️

This is actually a very difficult song to sing. Whether you're a tenor, alto, soprano or bass and singing only your part, you have to know when to go in and out of the song. If you sing it alone, it doesn't sound right until you put everyone into the mix. Then it's incredible how it all works out. It's one of my most favorite songs to sing.
Our choir sang it in high school, and I agree (as a Second Soprano). It just made me so proud to perform it!
It's difficult to play in the orchestra, regardless of the instrument as well, ray! I played the trumpet many years ago - the extra chills of being right in the middle, literally, of creating this gorgeous piece of music is still one of my fondest memories!
Try learning it while not being able to read sheet music. I’m amazed I managed it ngl.
Yes. I remember it was definitely something to learn when I sang tenor for a choir around Christmas. I loved learning it and glad I got to be apart of that. BEAUTIFUL song! Praise God!
It sounds like 3 or 4 groups singing in the round, I bet this rehearsal took a while, but definitely worth it, I use to be in choir but I never want this one, the soprano part takes your breath away, but I'm going to practice perfecting it, just for my own. Satisfaction, It makes me feel like he's near me when I listen to this, such a beautiful feeling.i can't wait to see him his love will end all of the pain.!!!!
The Hallelujah Chorus is from Handel Messiah. It was first performed in Dublin in 1742 and on to London. The oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best known and frequently performed choral works in Western music. The Royal Choral Society has performed the Hallelujah Chorus on Good Friday each year at the Royal Albert Hall since 1878.

When I was a boy my dear mother (now gone for over a year) would sing alto for the whole oratorio. I never got to sing it, and now I regret it. But I will always remember sitting up in the gods and singing the 'H' chorus with them, loving it immensely. I do so wish that all mankind could sing it and realize just how much faith and joy and love it contains! God loves us - and we sing our love back to Him!!!
It’s already a beautiful piece of music when it’s arranged with only a few people.
It’s completely incredibly majestic with this many people for all of the parts.
Hello Martha
How are you doing?
Somehow Händel managed to torture Sopranos and Tenors into the high notes in the most magical way.
no gain without pain
Do you mean Basses and Tenors? Sopranos are the highest.
Basses have it ok. I sang the soprano part, it's really high, in the way that you need to hold the high notes for some time^^
I myself am a soprano, and I know high notes are easy to hit, but hard to hold. Most people expect me to be able to hold every high note I sing, but I can't for most songs.
thank you for your honest comment
That was BEAUTIFUL!
My all time favorite song❣
I sang first soprano since 7th grade(1980) and was used to the high vocal ranges.
In 10th grade, (1983) was moved up to Concert choir. The first day of class, (end of August) the teacher hands us the sheet music for this song.
As the teacher took role call, I remember looking at the music and the first soprano notes heading into the RAFTERS! Thought we were going to need ladders to reach them!
By time of the concert in December, I totally enjoyed the song because it was a challenge.
The Christmas concert was at a local church and we got a standing ovation! We were so proud of our selves. 😃
My senior year of high school, (1986) I joined the church adult choir, and our choir director had us do this song for Resurrection Sunday. I was already familiar with it and this time got to really listen to the words.
Between the music and the lyrics, I came to realize what a strong, powerful and beautiful song it truly is❣
In the last ten years, I have completely lost my singing voice. 😔 I was never going to make it into a career, but I enjoyed singing so much.
But there will come a day, when the Lord calls me home and I'll NEVER LOOSE MY VOICE AGAIN❣🙂✝️🙏🎶
Amen!
Glory to the Lord Jesus Christ!

I've sung in chorales for over 50 years. Many choisters are agnostic or atheist. They sing because that enjoy performing what a human has composed. The section leaders in large church choirs are often professional singers who sing for pay and do not necessarily have any opinion about the existence of God. Inspiration comes from many sources, be it belief in Gods, a God, or appreciation for the works of humankind.

It would make more sense to play this on Easter rather than Good Friday
I thought this was a Christmas song it can be anytime since the words rin together anyway
I suppose the idea is that salvation came on Good Friday, but yes, as a choir member you would sing this Christmas or Easter.
Messiah as a whole is typically either performed at Christmas or Easter, but in reality it is an expansive work encompassing the whole of Christ's life including his final victory over sin and death that will come after Judgment Day.
There are a couple of scenes in Part 1 of Messiah that are devoted to the incarnation, but this particular chorus is not in those scenes, so it's not really a Christmas song. This chorus is actually at the end of Part 2 which transitions from his victory over sin and death to the promise of eternal life that Christians have after the Day of Judgment where sin is finally completely defeated.
Wish I could have been there to sing with them

This jojo episode is wild
I'm an atheist, however, I love this piece.
That's God calling for you
it's a good piece. it's a technically difficult piece to sing, and when done right, as done here, it comes together quite well. songs of praise and exaltation such as this can make you feel as more than just yourself on your own, make you feel as part of a bigger whole.
You won't be if you live to SEE Him coming in clouds descending out of the sky bathed in blinding light. You will believe COMPLETELY then.

Surely the most tingling, wonderful, moving and extra-ordinary pieces of choral music ever written. It would be impossible to get any closer to Heaven than hearing this.
If I might suggest, I definitely recommend listening to an Orthodox Divine Liturgy! Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky were very heavily influenced by the Orthodox Church. "Hymn of the Cherubim" for examples gets even closer to Heaven than this.
Seriously? Do you really believe that? It's an OK recording but I've heard way better versions. Frankly I found the visuals distracting first the lady picking her dress out of her butt then the lady in the purple looking like she just rolled out of bed and ran to the performance. Most of the choir looked like corpses, I didn't see one face that looked happy or excited or even slightly thrilled, just another performance. Technically alright but emotionally lacking.
