The user programable buttons on the mic and the customizable menu are 2 awesome features.. and being able to plug the mic into the head is a huge deal !

I bought this radio last week, but it is on backorder. Grrr. So, I'm soaking up all the RUclips videos I can find to help me get started when it arrives. I've been absent from ham radio for about 20 years.

It does have some nice things going for it for sure. Im hoping when I get on the road ill be able to have a justifiable use-case for it.

1:50 So, I now have an FTM-500, and I had actually just turned on the equalizer, almost on a lark, before revisiting this video. I'm not seeing the effect where the volumes are now locked -- they still seem to behave independently for me! Maybe it's because I'm actually listening on Bluetooth (which, btw, responds to the settings for the front speaker if you turn the equalizer on and start fiddling)

GREAT video. I was looking for one particular function, but the others I never knew about and now I use them all. Thank you!

Will this radio cross band repeat properly. My wouxun won't xcross band repeat because it doesn't support pl tones or offsets during repeat. All I wanted to do was access my net using an ht around the farm..

Thanks Jason.....if you ever find out how to make your home button a local repeater in the area instead of just the plain frequency please let us know.....I have the same problem with my FTM-300 as well..... Thanks again...

Cool and all, I still think they should have stuck with the FTM400 screen size. As you said in your previous video, the display is essentially the same as is on the FT5. There is no excuse for this. Hell, they could have updated the firmware for the FTM 400 and incorporated all but the front firing speaker and mic connector. I am happy I was able to get my second FTM 400 the day after they announced it's discontinuation last year.

It is a great radio. It's only the APRS interface that annoys me to no end. I do wish the screen was larger though. I suppose it all depends on how the operator will use it. Many who purchase it do very little with APRS other than set it up to beacon.

Why is it that Yaesu can't put all of the great features in a radio? The new features shown in this video are great, and the implementations in most cases demonstrate good user interface design so someone at Yaesu is definitely capable, but they always manage to give us one or two steps forward with one or two steps backward, usually with a "What the $@#& were they thinking?" on the side.

Two forward, one backwards is exactly my thoughts.

I doubt we will ever see the "Big 3" support M17. They seem stuck in this VHS/Betamax debate

@@KM4ACK I agree, however it's going to be really fun to watch them scramble when Baofeng embraces an open standard for digital voice and data. As soon as that happens, their world is going to change. If they were smart they would be collaborating on an open standard that is backward compatible with each of their proprietary digital modes.
