Ukraine already does that, at least more or less, according to the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of prisoners of war. Russia, on the other hand, treats their prisoners of war poorly. From the photos I've seen of prisoner exchanges many of them look malnourished and harrowed.

I agree. Defense stocks do well in times of geopolitical instability, as long as there's no financial fraud. Defense ETFs help spread risk by investing in different companies in the sector.
While defense stocks and ETFs are smart choices, don’t forget about the historical role of gold during uncertain times. Its value tends to rise as a hedge against geopolitical risks. How about allocating a portion of the portfolio to gold?

That's the driving force behind the war. The worst thing for Russia is that the outcome hasn't really mattered since the first days of the war. The only possible way they came out on top was seizing territory without serious resistance- they would look dangerously competent and create a buffer zone. The DAY that didn't happen and the world saw the comprehensive failure of the Russian military they lost almost every benefit they could possibly gain. Then it got worse, Finland and Sweden joined NATO their hypothetical Ukrainian buffer doesn't mean anything if the Finns go marching into St. Petersburg and cut off the Baltic Fleet in the first hour of the war. The only reason this is still going on is that Putin is in a catch 22. He can look weak by giving up or become weaker by fighting. There's no winning plays here and he has chosen like he always has that preserving the image of strength is more important than actual strength.
Well, 'more' doesn't mean "useful'. It does depend on what you get - pop-top tanks usually don't look very good after capture, and vehicles aren't much better.
