Thanks for coming back to Lovebites. Some background on "Swan Song" (you already know some of this but for your viewers who may not...) Chopin (pronounced Show-pan) was a Polish-born Romantic-era (1800’s) classical composer and piano virtuoso who lived most of his life in France. He is considered one of the greatest classical composers of all time. Miyako, who composes a lot of Lovebites’ music, is a professional-level concert pianist, and was originally going to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and is now one of the best metal guitarists in the world. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor). All five members of the band are Jedi-level musicians, but I think Miyako is a once-in-a generation talent, a true savant.
Nice commentary, you picked up on the duality between their "lullaby"-like melodic compositions and their pure metal mastery. I think this is what gives their music such a glorious feeling.

Great reaction. What a performance. I love that part when Asami comes in following the solo section. So epic! Asami is also trained in ballet and her dancing adds yet another layer to this spectacular performance. And as good as this song is on the album, that version lacks the Chopin piece. But it still works really well on its own and having the album end with Swan Song was a fantastic choice. Everything Lovebites do is extremely well-thought-out.
This is not the only song where they incorporate the piano. I've said it before, but I see a lot of X Japan in them, besides their popular influences. Their drummer Yoshiki would also switch between drums and piano.
Classical music is really popular in Japan and many Japanese musicians are classically-trained. No wonder that the musicianship of Japanese bands tends to be very high. It is therefore not uncommon to see Japanese musicians take inspiration from classical music. I've brought them up before, but you have to react to Galneryus. Angel of Salvation is probably the ultimate neoclassical metal song. And check out Unlucky Morpheus as well, to complete the trifecta of my favourite power metal bands from Japan. Maybe start with their song Unending Sorceress.

She is an amazing piano player and I wanna hear her take on Seven Seas Of Rhye by Queen. She'd pull that OFF. The rest of the song... I AM CLOSE TO TEARS IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL. This makes me want to see you guys react to the album Rise by Skillet. Love Bites reminds me a lot of Skillet (in a great way no comparison here)

Great reaction and combined analysis! By the way, the first (descending) guitar solo isn’t exactly a neo-classical piece. I’m confident saying this, because it is literally and directly a lifted quote from the Chopin Etude she’d just played! that’s why she played it, besides being cool, proving she’s the one really playing etc, but because that same written solo phrase appears on the studio version (without other reference or credit); in fact, the chords under that section are completely different, but it’s such a prominent “lyrical” melody (and in this case primed by the intro), that the music is (implied? Assumed? Taken for granted? Something…). Just a great song, but between the two of you I think you caught all the other stuff the cool kids were performing 😉🤷♂️🤘🎸💃😎

This is not one of my favorite Lovebites songs, but ... the video as a whole is almost impossible to beat. Start and stop with SERIOUS! classic piano. I have seen other metal classic mashups. But not like this. Its unique. And ... it is good. Damn good!

Miyako was playing a Roland electronic piano that she borrowed for a concert. She couldn't get used to the feel of the electric piano for the first time on the day, and she was nervous until the concert was over.
It takes a little history study to understand the lyrics of the Swan Song.
In 1831, the anti-government movement (November Revolution), initiated by officers and the public against the Polish government under substantial control of the Russian Empire, failed due to the direct intervention of the Russian army. Chopin heard the news during his performance trip to France. He lost his country of return. Around the time of the collapse of Warsaw, his agent announced "Etude OP10, No12". His agents exaggerated and promoted the song, eventually becoming known as the "Revolutionary Etude."
Miyako, who had been taking piano lessons since the age of three, composed "Swan Song" with reference to "Revolutionary Etude" and Dvorak's "New World".
Asami, who has been studying classical ballet since the age of two, wrote the lyrics by overlaying the image of "Swan Lake" on Chopin's episode.
This song is a requiem dedicated to the dead warriors who fought to regain his hometown.
Ironically, the Russian Republic, which revolutionized Imperial Russia, is now invading Poland's neighbor Ukraine.

ohh only god knows how many lives i saw lost in progressive metal, they could never enjoy music like before. Now they live tormented by the progression that does not let them enjoy the wonders of simple metal.

I think you know the story as the background of Revolutionary Etude. Then the etude and Swan Song are one set as a suite sharing the same theme which is death of heroes, dedication and sacrifice, honor and glory. People fight against Russian Empire, this song perfectly fits to the situation in Ukraine right now.

The pianist (Miyako) is also one of the lead guitarists (they have 2..). She is a classically trained pianist from the age of 3, and only started to learn the guitar from age 18! She’s a musical savant! 🎶
