@@mutton_man the arms were added to a puppet using green screen afterwards. Obviously they didn’t quite measure it up right to the original puppet, probably a different team working on it. The shot doesn’t bother me in terms of ‘ruining the film’, I just find it funny. You could say the same about a couple of the slightly more jerky of the ED209 shots

I wanted to hate on this as I'm a fan of traditional methods (even though I used to do 3D modelling and animation entry level myself), but.......watching this, I forgot I was watching an unofficial remake. It felt like i was just watching the original. Kudos! VERY well done!
This does a tremendous job of making it feel like it fits in the room, like the original did, while giving it animation that makes it realistically smooth, without being uncanny smooth.
LOL agreed :) But it could be argued it sort of makes sense: when ED-209 glitched and failed to detect that Kinney dropped the gun, then perhaps it also later failed to detect that the threat was eliminated? If so, the programming might just make it keep attacking.

(not sure I follow) Anyway: one strange thing with the whole sequence is that despite some bullets pass through Kinney (and some probably miss altogether) no windows etc are hit behind him :) I guess they spend all the money on squibs on Kinney so they couldn't afford the periphery destruction :D (this is a bit of a recurring Verhoeven thing though: there's lots of clips in his movies where bullets should cause harm when they don't - especially with shooters circling their target, such as in Starship troopers, Total recall and possibly to some degree in Robocop aswell)
I remember as a kid in the 90's( I think I saw this movie when I was 7 in 97) it amazed me and it still does as it's a damn timeless good movie that still looks great( minus the long arms bad guy falling part).
In 1988 when this cam out on vhs this blew my 5 year old mind. Now parents can't let their kids watch ninja turtles or whatever without worrying their kid will turn into a satan worshiping cannibal nazi.
Well done! Very smooth result. Fits very well with the scene, nice colour treatment. Surprisingly the stop motion version has more detail in texture, lighting and movement.

Trust me, in some movies there may be gigantic amounts of CGI, more than you could ever find while searching for it. CGI isn't ugly if used cautiously, it's like any other tool. And it's great to still use miniatures, real stunts, stop motion, force perspective techniques, matte painting, makeup, and all types of practical effects. But sometimes, it may only be shown as a small part in VFX. CGI is not the problem with modern action films. Lack of realism the problem. You can have as much CGI, but if there's no realism, the genuine cinematic artistry doesn't feel remembered. Take Terminator 2 and The Matrix for example.
@@osmanyousif7849 Yeah, CGI is over used, it should only be used for things that can't be done any other way or to remove errors. CGI can be good (Sin City looks stunning as well as a lot of CG animated films) but when there trying to convince you something is real then the problems start.
dude this movie was over 30 years ago. actually, they did a remarkable job if you ask me. also nowadays all the movie full of CGI but the storyline suck. older movie their storyline is amazing but obviously, they lack CGI. I personally prefer the storyline.

I noticed it too. It is a common Hollywood trope that stray bullets don't seem to penetrate anything. Heck, even in Dark Knight (Edit: Rises), Batman uses the batpod's machinegun to just shoot a SHOPPING MALL window with no concerns about bullets travelling further...

yup Phil Tippett stop motion was the leading edge thing back in that era of movie making I still prefer the stop motion over CGI any day!!!! CGI in any form is way overrated!

Ironically, the animation is a bit too smooth. Ed-209 is a janky, poorly-optimized robot, which the jerkiness of the original effects sold really well. Still awesome, though!

Definitely a technical improvement, no question, but for some reason I still find the original more intimidating, perhaps it's the jerky unnatural animalistic movement or just nostalgia. Either way this is excellent work and fits the scene very well.
This is a 1:1 full scale model of the Ed 209 used in this scene. The actor that played Mr Kenny is being blasted with actual squibs to simulate gunfire. The people in the room aren't acting, they are essentially watching a robot blow a guy apart. Its admirable that someone can make a blender model do the same thing, but not necessary, nor better when put in this context. No one thought this scene was cheesy when it came out, as it wouldn't still be celebrated and talked about 30 years later.
I’m currently trying to build a Blender model of ED 209. Hard surface modeling is not my strong point. I want to use it for my VFX class to demonstrate to the students. I’m definitely going to show them this. Awesome work!
Looks pretty good. They should do stuff like this more often. A mix of traditionally, and CGI movie magic can look just about as real as it gets when done properly.
You hit the ed 209 well. I like the movement, the new framerate (stop motion was 15 fps ) makes it more real. And you find the right ammount of filmgrain for the render ! Good one !
The movies are usually shot in 24 FPS, but the Ed's animation looks like 60 FPS, so it does not match, it's too smooth. However the bastard looks better than ever :D
it is rendered at 24 fps. 1 frame = 10min render time, so i would never render it 60 times for a sec ;) it may looks like 60 because of the motion blur
@@Storyx1 I would never guess it's the same frame rate. Would it be possible to fix it, or it's just too much work? Because otherwise it looks fantastic. I'd love to see the whole movie with these new effects, not to diminish fantastic work of original stop-motion Robocop crew of course.

Saw it at a pre-screening. We thought it was going to be a joke based on the title but at the end the entire theater stood and applauded.

Headcanon: Kinney had dirt on Jones and was about to bring it up in the meeting. Jones found out and staged this "glitch" as a coverup.

Nice example of what the software can do but without the stop motion the scene loses allot of the magic.
