- Over nearly seven decades, James Hong has racked up more film and TV credits than almost anyone. Even more impressive, the character actor did so while confronting demeaning stereotypes in Hollywood. Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz talks with the constantly-working Hong about a career that began with entertaining U.S. troops during the Korean War, and extended to such treasured films as "Chinatown" and "Big Trouble in Little China."

92 years, what a blessing! James is a gem!
I agree. When my granny was still alive at 100, it was a blessing to me, I miss hear dearly. I love legends who make it ot the next century, this century, some people didn't make it, they died last century.
Im glad he's getting a star he really deserves it
God Bless him! It's unworldly and a marvel of nature how he's hardly aged and his mind is still at sharp as a tack at 92!!
Yes. About time!
Should have gotten it years ago! What a legend!
Great news.
He deserves multiple ones at this point!
He should get a recognition just for he's long contribution to the film industry . The fact that he hasn't got a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame is a crime.
Agreed! It’s a shame that Hollywood took so long to recognize him…
That is tragic
Its racist...plain and simple. Tragic, ridiculous, crazy
Getting a star is not the flex you think it is. Iirc people who got a star have to donate like 30k dollars to get it
He's actually due to get his star on Hollywood walk of fame on May 10th! Due to fundraiser that was launched by Daniel Kim! :)
I love his energy. That takes so much STRENGTH to keep going in spite of so much adversity and humiliation. Bravo to you sir.
He's amazing! By the way, he mentioned that Jack Nicholson is one of the coolest guys he's ever met.
"It would have to be at least double scale." What a gem he is. I remember that Seinfeld episode and thinking, "man, I've seen this guy everywhere."
What does double scale means?
@@heythave Scale is the base pay rate for a principle actor in a film done under a SAG-AFTRA contract. Double scale is twice that rate. Say, for example, that scale for an actor to work one day on a film is $1,000. Double scale would be $2,000. Mank would get that joke, considering his lineage.
What surprised me a little is that, at his level, that James didn't mention his "quote". A "quote" is more than scale. Say that you wanted James Hong in your film. His agent (I'm sure that he has one) would say, "OK, here's his quote". In other words, "You want him? Here's what his services are worth." If James is willing to work for Mank at double scale, that's a discount!
@@mikerusso4169 Thanks, Mike!
92 going on 42. He's always a treat to watch. He needs an honorary Oscar, too.
Grew up watching him. Had No Idea he’s a vet in the army from the Korean War😳
Great Actor in Everything he’s been in! So Happy that he got a ⭐️ on the Hollywood Walk of Fame👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
James Hong has done a LOT of great work in his career, and he has always been fun and engaging to watch. I was particularly thrilled when he recalled his role of David Lo-Pan in _Big Trouble in Little China._ That was a hoot, and so is he, and I hope he keeps it up for a very long time to come!
Loved that movie!
Such vitality at 92 and still keeping up with the best of them. Very admirable.
Love him. Met him when I was a kid at a community event in SF's Chinatown. A hero then, a hero now. Big Trouble in Little China is a guilty pleasure -- I'll sit and watch it anytime it's on no matter what I'm doing. So happy he's still working.
What a pleasure it must have been to meet this legend. I'm going to see his latest movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, this weekend.
You won’t be disappointed. It’s a crazy funny moving film.
What a beautiful human. His example of apologising to the actor who wronged him is the kind of humility I seek emulate.
In our house, we are his lifelong fans.
🙇♀️🙇♂️
Whew!....at first glance of the video title i thought we just lost another great.
Man 92... outside of watching him in movies for the past 40 years, i would never guess he was that age.
Along with Gillian Anderson and Paul Rudd, there must be a portrait of him in some closet because he looks great!
i wish i have half of energy that he has when i’m 92. He’s got such a great vibe :)
This was a wonderful segment. That Mr Hong could show the glee and pride in some of his roles, but also share the hurt of racism. He persevered!!
He's in amazing shape and sharp as a tack!!!!
I really have to wonder if he does Thai Chi or maybe Qi Gong ... ?
He's so incredibly healthy looking and youthful compared to so many people his age .
No one thought to give him a star on the walk of fame until now? That's pretty outrageous
If I remember correctly, there was a time when stars thought this was cheesy and nobody wanted these, but clearly that's changed. There's still a financial cost associated with this, but the fact that folks like Wendy Williams and Guy Fieri got stars before James Hong has is pretty sad
I feel like I grew up watching James Hong on TV. He was everywhere. So glad he's still enjoying himself!
I tend to watch more film than television but I remember... "Cartwright, Cartwright!!!" Wonderful segment on an actor who I definitely recognize from film. Over 400 credits! Outstanding Mr Hong! Keep dancing, sir, keep dancing!
Even when playing characters with very little screen time, like when he was Hannibal Chew in Blade Runner, James Hong's performances are memorable.
Well, he's endured a lot. Look where he is now. So proud of this man...so proud.
Great personal stories of perseverance despite racism against Asians. James is truly a Hollywood legend.
Thank you CBS Sunday Morning. Your commitment to showcase diversity is so appreciated and respected.
Class act all the way! He was never a cardboard character, he imbued his rôles with humanity, even when playing a villain! Salud, Sr. Hong!
I've seen Mr Hong many times on film whether it's a tv show or movie. He's wonderful. What an honorable man.
Wow...he's in AMAZING shape for 92!!! GOOD for him...inspirational for sure!
What an inspiration! He definitely deserves a star!
James Hong is the best! I was just telling my mom he’s the one actor I can think of who’s in virtually everything I’ve ever watched since childhood, and always seems like such a nice person.
He looks great! 92, wow! Always liked him. Remarkable career.
He's a great voice actor and clearly HE IS Mr Ping of Kungfu Panda + Chi Fu from Mulan
James Hong is great, love seeing him.
“In every role I played, I tried to make it a human being”. He has had an amazing career and an inspiration for all.
Incredible character actor. He's been in so many of my favorite movies!
I know he's still working and I've seen him all my life, but the most recent thing I remember him from, and I still see it in reruns, is an episode of The Big Bang Theory set in a Chinese restaurant and his timing, expressions, and delivery are just perfection, keeping up with the kids.
Met him in 1997…a real class act.
Interviews with Christine Baranski and James Hong. CBS Sunday Morning is truly a gift.
James Hong isn't just an actor playing in a movie. James Hong is the movie himself.
I remember him in many movies..he always pulled off his roles making us believe in anything he did..keep on we love you😘😷
So happy to find out that the Asian-American living legend of Hollywood is still around 😊
What a great interview! Ben Mankiewicz had a great rapport with and respect for James Hong. Long overdue recognition.
That was sooooo special THANK YOU for focusing on him. As the kids say, we give them their flowers now!
Hes an amazing and inspirational actor and person. Thank you sooo much for this ! Wishing him all the best nd more in this New Year!🙏I have a great respect for him.
He looks amazing for 92. You couldn’t grow up in the 80’s and watch a movie without seeing him in something.
James is an inspiration!!
He was at a Albuquerque comic con ten years or so ago. Wish I'd talked to him. Just been in everything from noir classics to Kurt Russell action comedies.
At 92 still full of energy snd working. Amazing and friendly guy. He deserves more than a star on Hollywood boulevard. he should get an Oscar lifetime achievement award.
So awesome. It's hard to be in the business consistently for several years, let alone for decades consistently. He definitely has that recognizable face that you know when you see him. Good to see him having his face and name highlighted in this segment, and finally getting his name on the walk of fame. Well done, James! You're an inspiration to many actors.
James is good actor, we like him
Such a distinctive voice! I hope he keeps going for another decade!
A LIVING LEGEND Periodt.
WOW, I had never heard of him but definitely do recognize him. So glad we finally get to hear his story and celebrate his career.
He’s amazing! He’s everywhere. Even on King of Queens. He needs a Lifetime Achievment Award. At the very least.
James is an incredible individual . As a supporting actor, James shines.
Hong is a freaking LEGEND!!! He’s been in EVERYTHING and still looks fantastic! As grandma says in Nora from Queens “Asians don’t Raisin”!
Imagine a movie with Ken, James, and Jackie 🔥
I love Hong's performances in the Kung Fu Panda's movies and the television series Kung Fu. His career is an inspiration to me as an actor.
You are impecable Mr. Hong, Skilled, Courageous Hero, Champion, Asian Warrior Genius. I'm 69 and cannot move as smooth as you do! Congratulations on living through so much adversity. I sympathize with you about the discrimination, violence and suffering you endured. I'm inspired and appreciate your determination, humor, compassion, integrity and transparency. Your instinct told you that the toxic actor who dismissed you from 1 film was not mentally stable, that's why you made a mistake. He was threatened that you might take his part in the film. Not good to be around that energy. He actually helped you get away from his negativity which meant better karma for you somewhere else Mr. Hong. "What other people think anout us is none of our business". Love your positive attitude interview!
He deserves an academy award!
My favorite role of James will always be of Lo Pan from Kurt Russell’s Big Trouble I’m little China.
He is a national treasure. James Hong is an icon. I just saw him in Everything Everywhere All at Once, and I can't tell you how excited I was when he popped up on screen. Amazing how he lived through so much adversity but never let it keep him from doing what he loves, and we are all graced with the results.
I saw him walking around at the Farmers Market off 3rd St. in LA years ago, and remembered, he’s Lo Pan from “Big Trouble in Little China!” 🤩🙌
What a humble, sweet man this guy is. I’ve always loved watching him on the screen. So glad he’s getting his star!
I've loved him since Big Trouble in Little China! There are so many movies with James that I absolutely love... he is a Gem!
A living legend.
I love James Hong, I feel he is definitely an unsung acting legend. I have seen many of his movies and I always know who he is because he has a very distinctive voice. My favorite films that he has been in are definitely Big Trouble in Little China, Troll Hunters, Archer, The Last Airbender, Mulan, The Golden Child, and I believe he was in a movie with Nancy Kwan, I think it was the Flower Drum Song.
CBS Sunday Morning is the classiest journalism program on television. I feel better after I watch, I feel like I’ve learned something.
Thank you for this segment. Mr. Hong is one of my fave actors!
I saw him in the king of queens tv program, very funny. This gentleman, ho man, his history very talented, persistent individual. Inspiring
Well done Mr. Hong! Cheers to many more years on the screen. 92 where?
Hollywood was prejudice then and still prejudice now. Keep going strong James
"Big Trouble In Little China" best film of my teens! Wow! Lov him!
My favorite James Hong character was when he played "Uncle Benny" in the Lethal Weapon movies with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. He was hilarious when they had him in the dentist chair under the laughing gas. He is a wonderful actor and well deserving of a star. He always needs a special award, maybe "Best Character Actor of Seven Decades". Congrats to Mr Hong.
Uncle Benny is played by Kim Chan, not James Hong.
I remember seeing James in ‘Charlie Chan’ when I lived in England; he was the No.1 son of Charlie Chan. My best friend and I adopted that phrase and we were each other’s No.1 friend. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1990, she would have loved to see that James was still acting at 92.
He's had an extraordinary career, but he guest starred on Charmed beginning of season 4 and that was my introduction to him
A very lovely interview! Thank you so much!
“from minnesota, of course i thought you might be, hong is a fine scandanavian name” lmao absolutely mind boggling that the man worked with groucho and is still currently working 🤯 he should’ve had his star ages ago!!!
Grew up watching this guy! Love him in Kung Fu panda ❤️
he's a hero!
Very Talented Actor. Definitely Deserve a Hollywood Star ⭐✨
Oh my gosh!! This was a great peice on Mr.Hong🤗 & I remember soooooo many t.v. things he was in growing up--Bonanza, for sure & so many others-- glad he get his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame🌟🌟🤗
I love this guy, he's always so good in everything he's been in.
He was great in Wayne's World 2!
He's a treasure! Words cannot describe how great of a treasure he is to the acting world. Bravo!
I just watched "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and I checked him out. I am 52 and I grew up watching this man, he was in all the mainstream tv shows..... Full Respect.
He deserves more than a star, he's done over 400 movies! Everybody can recall at least one movie he's been in. Give the guy a lifetime achievement at the next Academy Awards
He's been in a million things! Saw him on the Big Island of Hawaii when he was filming Black Widow. Congratulations on the star! ⭐🤩👍❤️
When I first got a glimpse of the title line I thought, oh no! We've lost another great actor! Then I watched the interview and was very pleased to see that Mr. Hong was indeed still with us. Very happy for that and that he's still working. Extremely pleased to hear that he is finally getting a star on the walk of fame. Overdue and well deserved. A great entertainer.
Thank the "Good Lord" that you posted the excellent information on the professional career of James Hong..
James Hong is certainly a living legend, if only by virtue of sheer volume and recognizability. I suspect there isn't a living adult human being living in this country who hasn't seem him at least once on their TV or on the movie screen!
Oh man... Its been long overdue recognition❤️❤️😭😭. Well deserve sir! 👏👏👏👏
His performance in Blade Runner alone is brilliant
I'm 72 and have been watching Mr. Hong in films and television my entire life! Seeing him still going strong makes me feel like the kid I still am.
Time for a lifetime achievement award!
Yes I know the name. What an amazing career! Thank you Mr Hong.
Incredible!
The most recognizable actor in Hollywood, I literally grew up watching him all over tv shows & movies
I cannot believe James Hong is 92 when he looks , seems , and sounds so much younger .
Incredible ... but he live more years of being so blessed and healthy .
...and Mr Hong outlasted they all.🙏😘🥰❤️😘
You are the best! Always loved watching you in anything. Thanks for sharing your talents with us all these years.
He even played a Korean Mob boss in “The Perfect Weapon” with Jeff Speakman, Long overdue on the Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame IMHU. God bless him & his loved ones. A treasured talent indeed.
🥰🙏🏽💯🎶🦅
Hong is the man. He’s a great character actor,
James is a legend. He actually directed a horror film called The Vineyard that is a lot of fun. My favorite role will always be David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China. Bless you sir, and thank you for entertaining us all these years and to so many more! ❤
One of my favorite roles was as David Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China… I loved that movie as a kid and it came on HBO constantly.! I had no idea he was in so many of my favorite movies and tv shows Bless him 💐💐What an amazing and memorable career ✨
