you guys should do VR with a sim rig like this, makes SUCH a huge difference to how realistic it feels. Being able to have proper depth perception is massive.
@@Richard-HiFiMan Having gone VR, I really hate flatscreen racing. Don’t get me wrong, triples are great for streaming and spending hours in the rig. But you just can not beat the way VR tricks the brain 🧠
Just a friendly sim racing tip; You never want TONS of force feedback. More FFB does NOT equal more realistic. You'll want to dial it down to feel more or less like hydraulic power steering in a street car. Ideal for Assetto Corsa and various games with them. From there you can increase it SLIGHTLY, without losing the hydraulic PS feel, but with seemingly less "assistance", for more bespoke or classic racecars.
@@tonyyimbo It's not longevity, it's accuracy. Having all the headroom for power means it can accurately apply all the forces the game puts out without clipping or losing detail.
@@tonyyimbo the real benefit of all the extra power is that you get a quicker response on the lower range, whereas on a budget wheel you get a "deadzone" feel around the very center. but yes, lots of simracers like to brag that they have a wheel that could actually cause serious injuries if used improperly
@@tonyyimbo Yes... Normal race cars are somewhere in the range of 15-35nm. Logitech for example only puts out 3.5nm. So imagine a line graph starting from 0 up to 3.5, you only have that range for "feel", now imagine a line graph up to 35nm, you get a larger range for the "feel" to come into play. While you may turn the FFB down to say 25nm at peak torque, that is only for a small portion of the corner. Most sim racers are not fit like real life racers so they will use lower FFB. BoostedMedia does a great job explaining this.
Still has a Fanatec wheel and wheelbase, but hey, I guess a Simucube SC2's just aren't as plug and play. To be fair, I'm impressed they got Heusinkveld on board!
Years ago I fought with triple monitor setups however I could manage them; then I got a rift DK2, never going back for sim racing, especially drifting. VR adds so many things you didn't know you wanted out of the experience.
Everyone testing the setup: Struggling 15:04 Andy testing the setup: Casual and calm Gonna be an interesting story when this setup goes missing and later to be found in Andy's home.
Always great to see more sim racing coverage on LTT. Though the monitors were nowhere close to properly set up and the FFB levels were not dialed in at all (which could actually cause injury with those large DD wheel bases). Could be a great opportunity to do some follow up videos on how to get that all properly set up.
That stuff would have taken more time. You only get "good enough" videos when you have such hard deadlines like they put at LTT. Can't expect the finer details in any videos.
You need to adjust the angle of the side monitors in the triple monitor settings in the game so you get the perspective right and it doesn't looked stretched on the side monitors
I wanted to scratch my eyeballs looking at that.. Then Linus comments that the “surround” didn’t seem to add much. Also, it looked like the wheel stand was flexing an overly amount earlier in the video. I love when sim racing gets some appreciation from the mainstream but the lack of knowledge in this video can be quite misleading to casual viewers as to how to setup and what to expect with a serious rig and deep diving into the hardcore depths of sim racing.
Here's an interesting challenge you could try: Find one or two people in the office who doesn't have a driver's license yet, and see how well they can learn to drive a real car using only the sim.
I don't think they could find anyone who doesn't have a driver's license. It's pretty uncommon to be a working adult without a driver's license in north America
I actually learned to drive through sims haha. Its a very transfarable and translatable skill, if you can drive in a good sim and practice, you can drive a real car
13:10 There are two types of people in this world: those that can drive the Nordschleife blindfolded and those that smack the wall into Hatzenbach. A properly setup triple display absolutely helps (35-45 degree angles level and centered with the main monitor and properly configured in game). It's a massive boost in awareness being able to have your side mirrors and windows in view. Also helps some when it comes to hitting your marks around the track helping you hit your braking spots and hit apexes every time which helps a lot with consistency. Overall, you can absolutely achieve top of the leaderboard speed with a basic $150 Logitech clamped to your desk, but direct drive wheels, loadcell pedals, and triple monitor/VR setups can help a ton with consistency and awareness. Fanatec's FFB setups are overall solid to use out of the box. Max force of course isn't the best evidenced by you unable to turn the wheel. Only thing here that'll probably slow you down is the motion rig. It can be jarring and disorienting if the monitors are stationary, and you can get the necessary feedback from bass shakers like the Buttkicker at a 1000th of the cost although immersion from a motion rig is another story.
You should try a rig with VR as the immersion is just a different level. And it’s the only type of VR game that doesn’t feel weird as you’re meant to be stationary inside a cockpit anyway.
Nah. Flight sims are better. In a car you're typically only facing forward, in a flight sim you can track targets throughout the entire size of the canopy, it's definitely the best. Driving is probably second. And it's definitely not quite there yet. Headsets currently are too noticeable or heavy to really be better than monitors. Especially if you're doing endurance racing or long periods a VR headset is probably going to be uncomfortable or at least sweaty.
@@spoon1555 Some headsets are more comfortable than others, and some people can stay longer with a headset on their head than others. For example I usually use an Oculus Quest 1, and it's known for being very comfortable, yet, I still use it fine for hours. One headset that's particularly great for sims and still considered affordable is the Varjo Aero, which is apparently really comfortable.
spends all that money and doesn't calculate the correct FOV for the triple screen setup... you need that to judge depth that's the whole point of a triple screen setup, so you can have proper depth perception and field of view
Since you guys are beginners, I think it would be a lot more fun for you to try an easier car and easier track. A beat up old Countach on the Nürburgring is always going to be hard going. An MX-5, Caterham etc. at somewhere easy to learn like Lime Rock would be a lot better for you I think.
This is for entertainment. Actual gameplay is what, a quarter of the video? It's not a guide to video gaming car racing, or one about how good the presenters can get at it.
they made afew videos asking if we wanted car content i think the answer was yes but i still consider this a very gaming video i would have like more maybe 2 setups and a competition broke vs pro style maybe
I woulda put em in a shotoko revival project track with a r34 midnight, even with a way worse setup than them that map and the vibes are super enjoyable.
I mean, there is a reason why individual Sim Racing stuff is often even more expensive than the equivalent race car stuff. A pedal box for a GT4 is ~ 1000-1500, while if you get a hydraulic pedal box for your simrig can be up to 3000. Funniest thing though is Fanatec actually developing the GT3 wheel for the BMW M4 GT3 and putting it on the sim rig as well. It was 1399 Euros, it was sold out in less than 3 hours. And it is now sold out for nearly a year. So you got the real race car wheel on your simrig. Pretty mindblowing...
Jake is cool. I really enjoyed watching him geek out over all this. I enjoyed his constant dad jokes. Him and Linus vibe real well together. Give that man all the camera time.
@@gruijm1 dont think so, of course the more expensive the headset the better, but you cannot compare sitting in front of three monitors and being able to look around in the headset and seeing nothing else than the game
@@gruijm1 Not at all VR is so much better. You have proper 3d for a start.. Also missing seatbelts. and traction loss. I think Silentchill has a more interesting hexapod setup!
AC is good, but you should also check out ACC, rF2, iRacing or AMS2. Only problem with racing sims is that most of them need a lot of configuring to get them to feel right.
Ah buddy of mine has such a setup and it’s amazing! The high end Fanatec stuff is on a whole other level! It just needs moving mounts for the seat and rumble pads under all 4 corners to simulate the feeling of the street in your butt and it would be as perfect as possible with nowadays technology.
@@AtomicFrog77 okay than can you recommend what to buy? At the moment I have a G923 but I plan on upgrading this year and I want the best feeling Sim Rig I can get! It doesn’t need to have 500 NM or torque, it should be a decent amount and feel the best. So if a „lower class“ wheel feels better in how it handles the FFB (zero deadspot, no unnecessary vibrations or notchy feeling etc. What would be your recommendation?
Good to see Linus laughing and smiling. When we think back to his emotional, heartfelt , " What should i do - where am i going " video, that video was a breath of fresh air.
I mean, they are having fun, they are rich enough to buy whatever they want... ... As long as they are not playing MULTIPLAYER, I think everything is a win-win XDDDD
When learning a new sim or track, drive at a speed like you would on the street. 35-65 mph and then tweak the effects and car set up as you go. Push it a little harder once you memorize the track and get a feel for the game. Going all out on a sim or track you've never really learned will guarantee your car will be eating the barriers and walls. Give the tires and brakes a chance to warm up. In real life, you wouldn't go all out on a new car and new track you've never experienced. The gap in between the screens is driving me nuts. This is a real nice setup but if Linus gets hooked, there are some even more amazing sim rigs.
@@DJMaxY16 this one is but you don't have to spend more than say 300 (excluding PC/console and monitor since you'll already have those if you're a gamer anyway :P) to get 90% of the experience, spending more just gives you more immersion and or better consistency once you're up in the top 5% of racers
Why would LTT ever build a LAN Center? They’re a tech channel, not a LAN business 🤣 What, do you think they’d set up their review hardware as play units? LMAO. That’s so stupid it’s funny as hell, thanks 🤣
Having bought the Fanatec DD2 was one of the best things I did for my sim racing immersion but also car control. I hardly ever mess up anymore as the car communication is finally on realistic levels that it just clicks mentally, especially when you have your drivers license you just look for real reference points in that communication.
It'd be awesome to see you do this for a flight sim setup, the even more niche of the niche genre's needs some Linus love. I recommend sourcing Winwing or virpil/vkb parts if you do go down that route
Of course Jake is the one involved in this, not that I’m complaining. Though part of me wonders if this is payment for all of the help Jake provided for Linus’ new house.
The best part of this video is that Fanatec gear is derided in the high-end sim racing community for its lack of quality, especially in terms of fit and fiinsh, whihle Linus is raving about how nice all of that is.
I mean to be fair going from a T300 to a DD1/2 is a pretty big leap in overall quality but for pretty much the exact same dollar they coulda picked up a Simucube. It's probably a lot harder to get a sponsor from them than Fanatec though
Fun fact, real cars including the Tesla Model S Plaid, have plastic pedals with a spring and a little bit of rubber scraping plastic to make it feel "substantial". Look at the engineerx tead down video.
In every build video with Linus I hear these lines at least once. First: "I'm not going to use a manual." And then: "This makes no sense." "They build this wrong." "I have no idea where X goes." "Oh, I had to attach that first?"🤣
Heck yeah! I just got into the driving sim life about a month ago! Got me a CSL DD, three rims, the v3 pedals, shifter and ebrake! Have had hardly any time for anything but driving games since! A DD wheel base is AMAZING! looking forward to keep growing my rig as time goes on, and it would be awesome if you guys could start covering and reviewing sim hardware! I'd watch every minute of it!
These wheels have an emergency stop for a reason. I seriously think Jake should've gone through the precautions with Linus before setting it to high torque mode. If it's set up wrong it can rip your thumbs off.
It's urban myth, yes it has enough power to do that but realistically you will simply loose grip on it, only way for it to harm anyone is if your hand git stuck inside of wheel. Also he was holding emergency stop all the time.
This made me want to cry. I knew I would never even touch a sun close to this, and all I get is to watch someone who doesn’t have the skills to drive on it, and then never have a desire to touch it again. I am so sad. If I could get a give away item, this would be it. I’m so sad, I hope you guys make plenty of use for it.
You guys should do a VR sim setup (flight & car racing). Get the Varjo Aero with all of the accessories. It's soooo much more immersive than using flat screens.....
It’s great to see SimLab, Heusinkveld and D Box get some exposure in the tech big time. Just wish they would have went with a SimUCube 2 rather then the DD2.

After moving I will add dedicated seat place, right now I just use normal chair :D the best part it's all modular
Wow it actually was an ultimate setup. Most of the time we see this title with a g920 on a fixed rig haha. Great job. For the Channel super fun, pick an easy circuit (less turn the better) and make a lap time competition :)
As a sim racer, I clicked on this thinking nah, Linus isn't that into sim racing, this is probably some decent midrange setup that seems crazy excessive to normal people. But holy shit, this build pulls no punches! This is a badass, overkill setup and whoever gets to use it regularly is a lucky duck indeed!
16:26 Yaw VR is actually close to releasing their next full motion simulator, the Yaw2. They've changed the design quite a bit, with a racing style chair mounted on a 2D platform for pitch and roll, and an optional pedestal for yaw (and they're working on a version with elevation as well). I'm thinking that with a VR headset with a wide FOV like a Pimax would blow this away. I couldn't tell you if the software is any better, but it does sound like they've kept working to improve it. It would be cool to see a review from you guys once it comes out.

@@phantomcomics176 that not how that works, resolution in vr looks lower than resolution in normal monitors. for reference a combined eye resolution of 4k does not look even as good as 1080p on a normal monitor
VR racing gives some people really bad nausea, your body isn't moving at all IRL but your brain thinks it is going 200 kph, the disconnect just causes many people to get sick when doing rally racing or drifting in VR. Not sure how this is with newer VR generations though.
@@futc.photography that's not entirely true for race games. I have motion sickness in games but in road racing games you're not moving that much to feel nousia. But in rally driving can make you feel sick if you don't have motion sim. Another easy hack to fix motion sickness is to put a fan in front of you. It tricks your brain that you're moving. The next level is to rig the fan to the sim so it adjusts the speed with the car speed
VR just didn't have enough FOV for me to give up my triple monitors. Nothing can replicate that real in the car feeling that VR gives but IMO we're not quite there for full immersion.
Neat stuff! Would've been interesting to see games at different realism levels (from arcadey to sim) though. I kinda wanted to know how something like Forza Horizon would work on this.
bad news, FH5 is basically broken on Fanatc wheels right now. The only way to keep it from crashing at cutscenes is to roll back to a 3 year old driver. I have a CSL-DD, so it's back to other sim titles for me until (if?) it gets fixed. I really wanted to play Forza on it.

I never get why 30nm is a thing..bragging rights? Or just more overhead to ensure longevity
@@tonyyimbo It's not longevity, it's accuracy. Having all the headroom for power means it can accurately apply all the forces the game puts out without clipping or losing detail.
@@gitrekt-gudson well explained, and is there a large difference in clarity between a 20nm and a 30nm?
A version of that cockpit setup for MS Flight Simulator would be sick.
in my humble opinion that would be 10x worse
An actually high end sim racing set up from ltt. I never thought I would see the day lmao.

You also need to physically line them up! There are gaps and they are crooked. What a shame.
@@OkiDingo yup, and set the right FOV
I wanted to scratch my eyeballs looking at that.. Then Linus comments that the “surround” didn’t seem to add much. Also, it looked like the wheel stand was flexing an overly amount earlier in the video.
I love when sim racing gets some appreciation from the mainstream but the lack of knowledge in this video can be quite misleading to casual viewers as to how to setup and what to expect with a serious rig and deep diving into the hardcore depths of sim racing.

Here's an interesting challenge you could try:
Find one or two people in the office who doesn't have a driver's license yet, and see how well they can learn to drive a real car using only the sim.
I don't think they could find anyone who doesn't have a driver's license. It's pretty uncommon to be a working adult without a driver's license in north America
How could you be smart enough to have a computer engineering degree and not have a license?
@@vxcts6353 some people dont like driving and depending where you live you don't need to
I actually learned to drive through sims haha. Its a very transfarable and translatable skill, if you can drive in a good sim and practice, you can drive a real car
@@vxcts6353 Having a driver's license (or not) has nothing to do with being smart (or not).
What would be a good rig for sim racing. This is something I def want to get into.
@@gangstalifers-4312 Around what would be in your price range?
You should try a rig with VR as the immersion is just a different level. And it’s the only type of VR game that doesn’t feel weird as you’re meant to be stationary inside a cockpit anyway.
That's true. After playing on an RV rig playing with monitors is fine but it's not the same anymore.
Totally agree! Would love to see Linus take on a VR sim setup build!
@@spoon1555 Some headsets are more comfortable than others, and some people can stay longer with a headset on their head than others. For example I usually use an Oculus Quest 1, and it's known for being very comfortable, yet, I still use it fine for hours.
Yeah because if you wreck the video game car you are going to be out so much money and you could kill yourself... smh
As a simracer that knows the power of that wheelbase. I'm actually nervous when Linus crashes and doesn't take his hands of the wheel..
I was waiting/cringing at that. If the wheel base/sim didn't properly recognise the crash and went full pelt he'd be in hospital with broken thumbs.

Niels Huesinkveld is our dutch hero! Those pedals really look awesome! Would love some but cant complain about my Fanatec Clubsport V3's :)
some say a god.
Fun fact, real cars including the Tesla Model S Plaid, have plastic pedals with a spring and a little bit of rubber scraping plastic to make it feel "substantial". Look at the engineerx tead down video.
In every build video with Linus I hear these lines at least once.
First: "I'm not going to use a manual."
And then: "This makes no sense." "They build this wrong." "I have no idea where X goes." "Oh, I had to attach that first?"🤣

It’s great to see you guys covering this content. As a sim racer myself that was great to watch.
Jake and Linus' relationship just seems golden. Good on ya, mates!

Honestly its adorable seeing you guys fumble about with it all being so new
Okay now I want all the sim racing guys make a react video to this build. Now THAT would be some great content
While I would've gone with a Simucube 2 Pro for the ultimate racing setup, this is sick!
million dollar setup to drive around in circles on some boring track. racing sim games suck
@@mikelisteral7863 could say the same about real life sports. Football is just kicking a ball into a net, tennis is just hitting a ball over a net, golf is just hitting a ball into a hole.
When you simplify sports, every sports sounds boring.
@@madbull4666 ya most sports are lame. i like more adventure
@@mikelisteral7863 to me adventure games are pretty boring, I hardly ever play them and when I do, I play something else within an hour. Racing games are my favourite, I've always played them ever since the n64 days, they were my go to games.
@@madbull4666 racing around the same circle over and over is boring
That crappy monitor mount is triggering me so hard :D THEY GOTTA BE ALIGNED PERFECTLY!
I have been waiting for this since the WAN tease

The Simlab stuff is pretty reasonably priced, it's the Dbox that doubles the cost of that rig.
did you see the new simtag x Dbpx abs system? we getting haptic feedback in pedals now
Would love to be able to afford a setup like that. Get rid of the monitors and do it all in VR.
the stupid thing is that it would be cheaper with a headset....
if you can handle motion sickness, immersive as fuck :)
@@gamerdweebentertainment1616 What I was going to say, you'd first need to not be easily hit with motion sickness!!
@@gamerdweebentertainment1616 what motion sickness? VR now so crisp and so smooth there's literally 0 motion sickness, they reached near human vision of clarity now.
@@TRX25EX lmao
3:02 - 3:13 Linus's reaction to the layout and then Jakes laugh killed me!
Fun fact: If you set the force feedback to 100% this hub can break your wrist with ease
I would have liked to see this with a VR headset
2:04 Now I can just hold the shaft
This feels like they shot the video then realized the bloopers were more informative of their experience and entertaining than the video they were going to post halfway through editing it. Love it.
Personally, I find VR to be superior to any multi-screen setup for racing. It's pretty incredible.
Plus you could get a headset with a display 5x better for half the cost
@@phantomcomics176 that not how that works, resolution in vr looks lower than resolution in normal monitors. for reference a combined eye resolution of 4k does not look even as good as 1080p on a normal monitor
@@theblackdeath10 i have an hp reverb g2 and i disagree that it doesn't look as good as 1080p
This setup looks sick. But why not use VR for complete immersion?
Right?
@@armLocalhost erm, but do you have a full motion set up?
Being a long time sim junky this was a bit hard to watch but it's great to see LTT get in to the community 👍
They really did him dirty with giving him a challenging to drive old lambo and putting him on probably the hardest track in the world.
Neat stuff! Would've been interesting to see games at different realism levels (from arcadey to sim) though. I kinda wanted to know how something like Forza Horizon would work on this.
My man is ready to dump $8000 on a Forza rig
bad news, FH5 is basically broken on Fanatc wheels right now. The only way to keep it from crashing at cutscenes is to roll back to a 3 year old driver. I have a CSL-DD, so it's back to other sim titles for me until (if?) it gets fixed. I really wanted to play Forza on it.

@@bloodgoat LOL no way. Most I'd spend would be on one of those Logitech wheels or something, if I had space. I just thought it would be neat to see them experiment with different games.
@@thatdarnskag5043 lol yup. Gotta drop like $600 and grab a belt driven model from Thrustmaster. The gear/hybrid feel and sound like shit tbh
