Fender Mustang GTX100/GTX-7 Footswitch Problem (SOLVED)

- The new Fender Mustang GTX-7 Footswitch appears to have a pretty big issue, but the fix may be much simpler than you think!
UPDATE: I received a brand new FENDER cable, identical to the one in the video, and it does not work either. So far, only ONE cable has worked properly, and that's the one I already had. Chalk this up to a really bizarre problem that I just can't explain. I would love to know if anyone else has had this issue! Please respond!
A friend, a very savvy friend said this, "ALWAYS, ALWAYS plug your effects, guitar in first then out to the amp" .
I doubt this is the problem but it couldn't hurt to try. Hope this is an easy fix or solution.
Respectfully, thanks Jeffrey
DUDE, you have helped me a lot!!! It happened to my 4 button footswitch so i thought the solution was replacing it with a gtx-7 footswitch. It happened the exact same thing right out of the box. I was about to replace the whole amp. Thank you for taking the time for doing this video!
So glad it helped you. I assume it’s working now?
I did the same as you … I now have the MGT 4 & GTX 7 Pedal. 😡 ….. 🤔 Fender scam ??? 🤭
@@vking5665 I just saw your life story via those emojis
Thanks for your upload as I will be getting this amp in December and now know the fix if it doesn't work properly 👍
Ok, so the cable I bought was the Fender Lifetime warranty cable. One of those really nice tweed ones.
But even though that seemed to work, the real issue ended up being the firmware update and bluetooth. I reset the amp to factory defaults and disconnected the Bluetooth and everything started working correctly again. BTW, I still have that fender cable! That was a pretty good purchase.
I had the same problem and gave up on it trying to fix it, I decided to buy regular pedals instead. Luckily, I have an extra fender cable and it works properly now. Thanks for helping me and others with this problem!
Yes!i was starting to have the same issues. It worked fine for a year and I started noticing the malfunction. Going to try a new cable now that I’ve seen this video
Just opened my GTX 7 footswitch for a try out and happened to just click on this video at the same time. I've got the same problems as you had. It was going back to amazon but i'll get the cable instead. Surely Fender know about this issue! I bought my pedal from Amazon it was listed as used and a good £30 cheaper than new. Obviously the previous buyer encountered the same issues and returned it. Many thanks .. Brian
Brian, before you buy a new cable… try a factory reset and DO NOT enable Bluetooth! The firmware update and Bluetooth were actually the reason for my issues.
I know this comment is a bit late but had the same exact issues you had...but with the 4 button switch...I unplugged the cable and plugged back in and it worked....but I ended up replacing with a much better cable...and no more issues. Thanks for your help!
Thanks ... Just got the GTX 100 recently. I'll buy a Fender cable like yours just for when I play out. That way i won't be blindsided on stage. Thanks again.
Exactly the same problem! I used rolland cable... it works perfect now. Thanks so much, I was crazy before I found this video.
Tomas… that’s awesome! So glad it’s working for you now!
Wow! That's a little crazy. I just got my GTX last week and haven't started to deal with the footswitch yet. Happy to have this great info in advance. Thanks, Dale.
I would like to point out that my issue was related to a firmware update, and Bluetooth connectivity. Once I restored the amp and disconnected, the Bluetooth, all my issues were resolved.
@@TeamJacobWV Cool, thanks!
Just clicked on your video and im typing this before watching the whole thing lol. I just got the gtx 50 and ordered the pedal. Took 2 days before the Bluetooth decided to work and now im just trying to dumb it down and go up grom there lol
Matt, good luck! I believe if you get it working right, it’s one of the best amps on the market right now, for the money! My problem ended up being a firmware update, but Sweetwater replaced the entire amp. Either way, my problem is gone, and I am loving this amp!!!
Because the cable is carrying a small amount of power to light up the Footswitch I'm guessing the cheaper cable can't handle it.
I think I may have fixed mine! While the amp was still turned on I pulled out the cable from the footswitch and plugged it back in again. Voila! The GTX7 started working properly. In case it was a fluke I tried plugging in the GTX7 AFTER turning on the amp and it worked fine. Perhaps the voltage drop on amp startup "robs" the footswitch module (as seen when removing the case handle assembly) of the voltage it needs to properly drive the IC on the footswitch module.
I’ve been thinking about buying this amp. Thanks for the advice, I will keep it in mind if I run into issues
I love it! This thing sounds amazing to me! I sold my Boss Katana to buy this one and haven’t regretted it one bit!
Thanks so much, I was having this problem but switching out the cord saved me from wasting more money on a replacement
Don't rule out doing. factory reset on the amp. If the problem persists, that could be the fix.
@@TeamJacobWV I ended up figuring it out I stole my friends chord and it works great now, thanks for the help!
@@MutantBurglar hahaha… awesome! What are friends for? Right?
Switch happy. I'd break, too! 😂
Kidding, brother. Thanks for the video. I just bought one! 🔊👍
The issue ended up being related to the latest firmware update and bluetooth connectivity. Once I restored it to factory specs, it was fine. I was very frustrated with it when I made this video, so i was probably too aggressive, but this had been going on for over a month! Fender and Sweetwater were both stumped.
Yeah I just got this same one for Christmas...I’m gonna try it and see if this helps out but I think the chord they provide just isn’t as “strong” as what you used afterward. Thanks for showing this problem though, I feel like I might run into it as well
The increased capacitance of the longer cable perhaps -- almost looked like a keybounce issue with the shorter/thinner cables. Waiting on my GTX-7 to arrive so I'll see if I get the same thing.
I have issues with a Fender Acoustic Junior and the 4 button foot switch. Works in my house, doesn't at our rehearsal facility. I'm going to try a different cable. Thanks!
Random person here - now very glad, thanks a lot!
thank you for watching!
Thanks Dale for doing all the footwork and posting this video
Nice to know the fix for that footswitch..thanks for posting it!
Holy Cheese!! I've had this footswitch now a couple years since I bought my 100 amp.... hadn't used it yet. Today, a few years later , I pull it out of the box....hook it up, and wouldn't you know it... same dag gum problem . I am so glad you did this video and it was the first that came up...thank you for doing it . Otherwise I'd loses my ever loving mind! Can you please share exactly the cable you bought from Sweetwater ? Thank you
It may be the length of the connector inside the Jack. Your fender cable might be slightly longer or thicker making a better connection. Possibility
I had the exact same issue with my GT40 and 4 button foot switch and found your video. Tried my high quality cable, that didn’t solve the issue. It’s indeed only the foot switch option where you can turn effects on and off with the stomp buttons that doesn’t work. So my guess it must be software/firmware then. I did a RESET ALL (restore to factory settings with current firmware, you will loose your custom presets) from within the amp menu and that fixed the issue! I bought the amp a year ago and updated the firmware about 3 or 4 times but never did the reset. Hope this will help other people as well.
Finally, Sweetwater replaced the entire amp... problem solved! It had to be firmware, it never occurred to me to do a reset! But it was a brand new amp, I should not have had to deal with that, so I do not feel bad letting them replace it!
Don’t know why I didn’t think of this. Guess I was still thinking in terms of a tradition amp and not a computerized modeling amp. Will try the reset and see if it works for me. I know it can’t hurt. Thanks for the info.
@@chrisw.7039 Did the reset fix it?
@@TeamJacobWV It did and the included cable works fine with it. Thanks for the info👍
I wonder if it is electrical interference. I had issues with the looper going wonky. Huge hum noise and had to turn off amp and trun back on to get rid of it. I will try a better cable - GTX 50 and GTX-7 switch
I have the same setup, using the supplied Fender cheap cable. No problems at all. And I too love the amp.
Michael, I am not sure how to follow up on my video, so i am just leaving it up for opportunities like this! The issue was THE AMP. Sweetwater replaced it and the problem is gone! Something was wrong internally. I guess it happens. I do LOVE this amp! Man it sounds good!
Thank you so much! Ive had this same exact problem and for a moment I thought I was gonna have to live with it!
Thank you for watching...The original cable was the one Fender provided. I replaced it under warranty twice, even used a premium Fender cable the third time. The problem ended up being a bad firmware update, which I had to figure out on my own. When I factory reset the amp, the issue was resolved.
Thanks for making this video. I use this foot switch with the Rumble Studio 40. Same issues.
I encountered a similar situation today, which drew me to your video, and I have your answer. It’s not the cable, it’s not the foot switch, and it’s not the amp. It’s the presets. I downloaded presets from 2017 today, pre-GTX, made back in the days of the four button foot switch, and I had the exact problem you did. If I unplugged the foot switch cable, I was able to regain control. If you have downloaded presets, this could be your issue. Also, I think my problem was connected to my Tone app thinking my GTX was a GT (I had a GT for three years).
I did not download any presets and actually the problem returned. Sweetwater replaced the entire amp last week and my issue is gone. All I use is the 65 Princeton with effects. So weird, but like I said, the issue is gone now. I was thinking about taking the video down, but I couldn’t find anything online about my problem, so for this reason, I have left it up.
Well done that man, confirmed tried all of the above with cables, it is turning on/off effects from downloaded presets that causes problem, in amp created patches work flawlessly! Such a relief as the amp is astonishingly good for the price.
I got this amp a few months ago and never used the pedal. Just been using the app with it. I will try it with the included cable and see if I have the same problem. It looks like it might be something with the shielding on the lower quality cables. I have a Mogami cable to try if I have the same issue with the included cable. Thanks for the issue report.
The plug itself might have metal that is touching the input Jack metal and disrupting the connection.
Thanks a lot! I had the same issue with the 4 button foot switch, really frustrating. I really appreciate your advice. I am also having problems setting up set lists on the amp with the foot switch plugged in, it just keeps skipping the effect I want to select.
I'm having a problem with it too at the moment and it is also on the effects settings. The presets I programmed myself with effects operate kinda funny, for example I have my tape Plex delay set at FX2, but when I try to operate FX2 it doesn't, I don't see the red light, but when I operate FX3, the effect operates along with the other at the same time.
Robert… I discovered 100% of my issues were related to the firmware update and the Bluetooth connection. Do a Factory Reset and do not update it and do not connect it to Bluetooth… if you have to do this to setup your presets, be sure to disconnect it afterwards. Let me know if this works for you please.
I replaced my MGT4 with a GTX7 on my older first generation GT100. Fender Cust Srv confirmed they are compatible but GTX7 works erratically. Sometimes ok but other times not. Very frustrating.
I really do love this amp.
The problem is the amp..Alohaa
So the factory provided cable that came with the foot switch is an unshielded cable. The other 2 that you tried are both shielded. Wondering it that makes a difference. I lost my factory provided cable and now need another one but am having trouble just ordering one of those
hey Jon, I'm sorry for the late reply. Just so you know, the quality fender cable did work for me, but I also discovered the issue was directly related to the firmware update and Bluetooth connectivity. When I did a factory reset on the amp, and turned off the Bluetooth, everything started working properly again!
thank you mister highlanderwv
Very welcome!
I am using the 4 pedal with GTX and have problems like that. I particularly don’t really like the amp. Dialing presets is delayed and overall don’t feel like the sound is what I want. But on the fix - thx
I agree! I sold the amp and bought a Princeton Reverb!
@@TeamJacobWVI’m thinking Hot Rod
Got gt mustang 200 playing around with it all night wanted to have fun with looper. U might need thr alcohol spritz on ur knobs ( pedal)
Thanks for the advice
The cheaper cords don't have a ground they only have 2 wires not a third to the ground.
I literally just bought mine a few minutes ago and hoping to pick it up this afternoon. Hope I don't run into this issue, but at least I know what to try...
No worries! My issue ended up being the amp itself, and Sweetwater exchanged it. In retrospect, I now believe the problem was a firmware update, which could’ve probably been fixed, if I had simply reset the amp to factory specs. In any event, the new amp is perfect and I freaking love this thing! You will love yours too!!!
Thanks definitely worth noting I only just got my gtx100 but things like this can be a life saver, well effects saver to be accurate 🎸⚡️
Turns out my issue was a problem with the update on the amp. Sweetwater replaced the entire amp and this resolved my issue.
Hey I'm not sure if you will read this.. but I have a problem with that foot switch when I use. Tha looper .. I've been playing for years. And it's not my timing I can hook up my boss rc1.. and it's no issue.. but when using tha pedal... When I start y loop on that one. N Finish on tha one. When. It plays back there's a gap..
I have the same issue! Did you find a solution?
@kaanolcusenler1900 yes I did..and to be embarrassingly honest I was hitting the wrong button I wasn't hitting stop I was hitting the play button and it was using rest of tha loop n playing out .. so if u hit stop then play ur golden ..I think..I have had no issues with it since
Appreciate you sharing this. Thank you!
I am actually having issues with my looper pedal too. There seems to be a lag when recording loops! (which makes the looper useless!). My friend has the same amp and pedal and when we try with his amp, it works (so it is not my bad timing :) ). Did you have this issue as well?
I absolutely did have this issue too! I think it has something to do with the Bluetooth or WiFi being turned on. I updated the firmware and that’s when my issues began. Doing a factory reset and disconnecting all communication (BT and WiFI) seemed to fix the problems. I was so disappointed… I sold it and bought a Roland Blues Cube. 😔
My ex went nuts like syd Barrett and abandoned me after 18 years. So I inherited all his gear my bunny chewed it so I put it back to gether barely any volume for the looper. And got a real fright when turned my Bluetooth youtube on. Nearly blew a fkn gasket on my ears near amp. I'm going to get a new cable. I tried a diff cable and ur right it fixed nothing. So either it has to go back or get a new pedal
Try doing a factory reset on the amp, and do not connect it to Bluetooth and don’t update the firmware. LMK if that works for you.
¡Buena suerte!
When I bought my gtx100 last year it came with a 3ft quality cable for the switch7 pedal .Do you have the EXP-1 EXPRESSION PEDAL There are no videos on it and the only programming on it is in Chinese by a youtuber named Rickey just wondering UT it looks like a great addition and It connects to the switch pedal .one of my future toys to get
I do not have the Expression Pedal, in fact, I no longer have this amp either. I was super frustrated with it and sold it. Went with an actual Princeton RI.
I’m having same problem,, is the cable a hi quality fender instrument cable?
Hi Bob, I’m not exactly sure why the high quality cable fixed my issue, but I was able to determine that it was not the cause of the problem. The issue is caused with the firmware update and/or Bluetooth connectivity. If you reset the amp to the factory settings, before the firmware update, and do not connect to Bluetooth, it should work fine.
I have been thinking about buying this amp but sometimes hear about issues with the amp even beyond what this video shows. Can anyone tell me if they have the amp and if it has more issues than this and what they are? Really don't want to buy it and find out its too annoying to use because of software failures.
I had the amp and it was awesome… My video demonstrated a problem that I was able to solve with a factory reset. Turns out, there are certain things that will mess it up, such as having the Bluetooth on and the newest firmware update. If you keep the amp to its factory specs, it should do a fine job for you. The Princeton setting is amazing! I sold it and actually bought a Princeton, Otherwise, I would still have it.
@@TeamJacobWV thanks for the response. Ya I was really looking to just get various fender cleans that sound really good and hoping it would also work well with real pedals too. I don't want to spend real fender princeton money tho haha. I've even thought about buying used Fender Princeton Solid state amps or the old princeton chorus but I only have online videos to go off of so its a gamble ordering used online if I'll like it or not...
I had the same problem!! Thanks
Hi Dale, thanks for the video! Have you noticed sound quality downgrade with the looper when you record then hit play on the footswitch? I have mustang gtx50 and gtx-7 footswitch, when I play and record - all fine, sounds great, but when I hit "play" on the footswitch, sound quality drops drastically. I wonder if it could be same thing with the cable?
I am sad to say that I was never able to get this far in my testing. I became so distraught with the many issues I was having, I sold the amp and bought a Princeton. I will say, my issues appeared to be due to a recent update. When I reset the amp to factory specs, my problems went away.
@@TeamJacobWV thanks for reply
I’m having that same problem. I’ll let you know how I go. My pedal the mode button does nothing. The REC/FX1 button controls the PRESETS/EFFECTS/LOPPER lights . 🤔???
Do a factory reset! Turns out there are a few things that affect the performance of this unit, one being the firmware updates, the other being the Bluetooth. If you do a factory reset it should fix all of your issues. This is what eventually worked for mine. I finally became so frustrated, I got rid of the amp and just bought a Princeton. No more modeling amps for me.
@@TeamJacobWV I just use this for practicing as I like the Fender Clean also trying to learn the looping effect. To be honest not really feeling the loop thing. I’d never use this amp for gigging.
Most likely depends on how well the cable is shielded. Homes and other locations these days are subjected to various amounts of electromagnetic radiation from all sorts of sources including cell phones and such. The types of radiation and amount will vary from place to place so could account for uneven operation if cable is not shielded well.
The cable was the one Fender provided. I replaced it under warranty twice, even used a premium Fender cable the third time. The problem ended up being a bad firmware update, which I had to figure out on my own. When I factory reset the amp, the issue was resolved. By this time, however, I was done. I sold the amp and bought a Princeton!
@@TeamJacobWV My GTX-7 footswitch works fine with my GTX 50 amp. The amp sounds good enough in clean territory to use at home. Very versatile with a looper and the amps effects IN/OUT connections etc. The Princeton sounds good, but cost quite a bit more unless you can find a good one on the used market. Hope it works out for you.
@@TeamJacobWV LOL- thats one way to fix it! I have a surf green Celestion Princeton that can't play often n an open to the upstairs basement. I got the GT 2nd hand to kinda cover that territory (and Vox) and with its upgraded triple cone speaker its a cabinet for my multipedal, too. The GT 100 is a swiss army knife, for sure, and sometimes a real pain, but its got some uses if you get creative.
Thanks for the heads up 😁👍
Hey David, I hooked this amp up last night, and the issue has returned, even with the new cable. I contacted Sweetwater today and they are replacing the entire amp!
thanks so much! I'm using the older switch GT-4. The switch constantly shows: "u-3" and does not work at all. I should have tried another cable. I've sent Amp and switch to the reseller and hope they find the root cause. Probably its the cable. damn... should have tried before. cable looks just ok. it worked for >2years. why should there be a problem with it now? I'm using FW 3.0.43. Would expect it is a SW issue. Some SW has a problem in working with Flash memory. After a while it breaks the memory chips as it writes to the same memory location too often.
What really makes me wonder is that I cannot find any article reporting the code "u-3" on the display of the footswitch. There is even no list of error codes which is quite normal for products like this.
Anyone here who has seen such effect?
Updating the firmware can also cause these issues. Sadly, I found this out too late. My reseller replaced my entire rig... I guarantee you I will not be doing any updates on this one!
please list the fender cable you end up buying , thanks

I’ve had this amp for about 8months now, and yes I’ve had the same exact problem, it seemed to be when I was connected to Bluetooth and the fender time app, it doesn’t really happen if I’m playing just thru the amp. Did you ever consider that? Just curious because I really assumed it was a Bluetooth wifi issue. But you might be right I will try a better cable . Thank you.
My issue ended up being the amp itself, and Sweetwater exchanged it. I now believe the problem was a firmware update, which could’ve probably been fixed, if I had simply reset the amp to factory specs. In any event, the new amp is perfect and I love this thing!

Wow, good question. Unfortunately, I really don’t know. I became so frustrated with this amp, that I sold it.
Hi! This footswitch just work with Mustang? And need that specific audio cable model?
I’m sure any footswitch would work, but this is the one that came with the amp. Also, not sure why the fender cable worked, but the entire problem ended up being a firmware issue. I reset the amp to factory and the issue was resolved. Just do not do the firmware updates and stay off Bluetooth.
@@TeamJacobWV Okay, I'll stay away from firmware updates.

That is not a Fix ! Those bad cables still dont work!
After fighting with this through several cables, I finally discovered the issue was due to a bad firmware update, and Bluetooth connectivity. After a factory reset, the amp started working correctly.
