My great grandfather was killed at paschendale during the 3rd battle of ypres in 1917. I needed to visit the place and went last November on the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, it was such a moving experience, his body was never identified, so he could be buried in an un-marked grave in any number of cemeteries in the area or still lying on the battlefield, but at the largest cemetery at Tynecot I found his name on a wall commemorating all the missing. Despite all the horror it is a beautiful and peaceful place now and I paid my respects to him, his comrades and to everyone from all sides. I think the world would be a better place if we could all visit these places. Thank you for your reaction, I would love to hear your views on Revalations or When the Wild Wind Blows, both by maiden. Cheers.
A little context. Paschendale is the name commonly given to the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Ypres, in Belgium Flanders saw furious fighting throughout the 1914-18 war including three full battles). The Battle of Paschendale lasted for about 4 months from July-November 1917 and was named for the fighting towards its end for the village of Paschendale (by that time so devastated it effectively did not exist except on a map). The fighting is infamous for the horrifying conditions of mud and rain as the region experienced a unusually wet season in an area already water logged and destroyed by multiple years of static fighting. Ypres and Flanders have become sacred ground for the sacrifices made there by Commonwealth soldiers (UK, Canada, Australia, Sth Africa, India, NZ - mainly) alongside troops from France and Belgium. Ypres has two great Commonwealth memorials to unknown soldiers, men who died in the Flanders area over the 4 year conflict but whose bodies were never found. The Menin Gate in Ypres itself commemorates nearly 55,000 men with no known grave and the Tyne Cote cemetery wall to the missing includes another 35,000 dead without identified graves, so the Flanders area saw roughly 90,000 Commonwealth soldiers simply vanish, lost into the cauldron of the fighting. This was a different kind of conflict to anything we'd recognize today, its horrifying nature should be remembered as a lesson to us all of the horror, futility and waste of war. Its also worth mentioning that the Belgians spell it Passchendaele.
@@michaellejeune7715 I stand corrected, obviously the limit of my knowledge is historical and I'm not up to date with modern Belgian changes. Thank you.
I agree with everything you have written except for one thing. They weren't Commonwealth Soldiers. At that time, they were Soldiers of the British Empire. The Commonwealth wasn't founded until 1931.
A masterpiece..... no doubt about it. Iron Maiden have Great War/Anti-war songs. Please check The Longest Day (about the D Day - highly recommended), For the Greater good of God, Aces High, Fortunes of War, Two Minutes to Midnight, The Legacy, Tailgunner, Afraid to Shoot Strangers, etc. Iron Maiden is perfect to bring emotions when they perform a song. Those feelings could be great, sour, bitter, sweet, get the point.... that what's the song about.... to bring the audience a good experience when listening any song... That's why Iron Maiden is so cool and different to other bands....
I saw them do this live in Newcastle, at the start of the song there was no sign of Bruce Dickinson, then when it really kicked in he stood up from leaning over a barbed wire fence. He'd been leaning over it singing, it was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Listen to the guitar solos in this song. They just screams out PANIC! How the band can translate those feelings into the guitarplay is just amazing... Iron Maiden are one of a kind.
Some info on the song: the drums were produced to sound like cannons and artillery, and the cymbals at the start and part way through were supposed to resemble morse code. They put a lot of effort into this song and it pays off. The live version is brilliant on death on the road.
An amazing documentary was release last year to commemorate the centenary of the end of the war called 'They Shall Not Grow Old'. It was narrated with the voices of veterans of the first world war and uses remastered and colorized footage from the war itself. I strongly suggest anyone who's interested in learning about the experiences of the soldiers to watch it.

Almost. He was warming up and played the intro while Nico was listening. He than wanted that adrian replays it but he didnt know what nico was meaning. Nico than grabbed the guitar and everyone was suprised that he could play it an repeat the sound correctly. That was in the interviews on the death on road dvd package. Sry for my bad english btw ^^

Iron Maiden knew once again how to get and capture the feel of this theme and turn this into a masterpiece for their extended musical legacy. From the very beginning to the end of the song we can picture in our minds the scenes of the war in Paschendaale through each verse and instrumental parts of this song. Perfect! The chorus is killer and takes you right back in time and puts you in the frontline feeling all the emotions and the loneliness that a war battle can bring to a soldier. The closure gives you the idea of a death moment..as if the soul of the soldier was fading away. Long live Iron Maiden! Hey, Vini and Sori, Very good choice of song to comment. God bless you all.
Believe they already did a live performance of this one not too long ago. Check it out! Great suggestion though, one of my absolute favorites, if not THE best. Cheers dude! 🤘😎🤘
The battle of paschendale was unique because of the terrain, most of the casualties were either killed by the mud or there bodies were lost in it, it was like quick sand, if they stepped off the wooden planks laid down they were almost sure to drown, so many soldiers were never found. It was a horrific battle for both sides
It's crazy that you guys have done so many Maiden songs, and havent done more off the Piece of Mind album. Tracks like "Where Eagles Dare," "Revelations," "Flight of Icarus," and "Die With Your Boots On." All amazing Iron Maiden songs. 🤘
One of Maiden's best choruses of the modern maiden era. Always been one of my favorites from them. Great pick. Great instrumental section in this as . Whats interesting about this one is that it doesn't have that traditional maiden gallop like some of their other songs. At least not the whole way through. That bridge section in the middle of the two solos is some incredible writing this is a 9.8/10 for me. Funny you should mention Woods of Ypres Vin.....

Vin, Paschendaele is a Belgian Village in the Northwest Belgian Province named West Flanders. There was a major battle or Flanders Offensive there during WWI with England, France & Belgium on 1 side & Germany (German Empire) on the other. This battle was before USA joined the war. I researched the battle, and there are other major offensives led up to Paschendaele Offensive. Causalities were about equal on both sides.
In WWI, unknown grave was literal. Soldiers would fall in no man's land and the battle would continue to rage for weeks or months with no possibility of recovering the bodies. Corpses would be buried by the shellfire, or shredded by it. Ernst Junger, a German veteran who wrote a book called "Storm of Steel" based on his experiences, wrote of digging a trench and digging down into a layer of bodies where a previous trench had been flattened and forgotten with dozens of dead men entombed by the artillery.
I actually went to Ypres last year, close to where the battle of Passchendaele was. I visited the museums, memorials and such. It was very impressive and you can see the utter senseless of 'The Great War'. A lot of suffering on both sides. This song does a nice job of catching that vibe. They actually still have a memorial service every day at the Ypres Menin gate where The Last Post is played (since 1928). Usually quite a few people show up to pay their respects.
Paschendale was the costliest battle of WW1, and the traffic (and city) still comes to a halt every day for the commemoration and remembrance service held there every single day. Iron Maiden's lyrics always focus on the horrors of war, and never glorify it, except in one song I can think of - Aces High - which remembers the few - those young airmen who saved The UK from German invasion in WW2. In the words of Winston Churchill "Never, in the field of human conflict, hs so much been owed by so many to so few".
The next Maiden song you should react to, that also talks about war and similar themes is For the Greater Good of God, it's an awesome song. Until then, you should react to Alcest or Magna Carta Cartel (the band that came before Ghost, far superior in my opinion and it doesnt revolve around satanism, check them out! Hotellus Eviction is their to-go song)
I love MCC. I dont really compare MCC and Ghost since they play in completly different ways and genres. My favourites are Valiant Visions Dawn and Sunsettlers.
on the concert they putt, hang wires on stage, in one moment Dickinson act like he is stuck in, he is in uniform from ww1, and thay play this very well, crazy how good they are live, this song special and couple more
Brilliant song. Great discussion! This is nowhere near my favourite Maiden song but I really wanted to hear Vin talk about this topic. Thanks for doing this song!
Total casualties at Passchendaele are estimated at 475,000; about 275,000 British and Commonwealth and about 200,000 German. 38,000 Australians, 15,654 Canadians and 5,300 New Zealanders fell there, either killed, wounded or missing.Oct 6, 200
I know Paschedale is a village in the Ypres salient there was a report that a Canadian Soldier was Crucified on a barn door or tree with 5 bayonets. Not sure if that was verified but it was used to sell war bonds and I believe a memorial was made for this soldier. Rest in Peace to all soldiers from both sides of that conflict sad to know they are still finding some of the missing from that war.
Paschendale is a town in Belgium where during WW1 all hell broke lose.....a lot of Englisch soldiers died , it has one of the biggest Englisch war graves . Belgium has a verry big war history That goes way back even to the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. Waterloo.....france Emperor Napoleon was Defeted there.....WW1 Ieper, Paschendale....WW2.....Batle of the bulge where the last big german attack was and the defeat of the German army.......yes guys...this al has taken place in the little country called Belgium
Canadians were the only ones to capture Passchendaele and when told to give it to the British it fell to the Germans. What a waste for Canadian soldiers in the war.
I had a family member in the Great War. He died at Vimy Ridge in his 21st year. He was a sapper. Died digging under German trenches and laying explosives. Husband's family member was in the engineers division behind the lines. He survived.
paschendale is a small village in Belgium, and it has the biggest british cemetery with soldiers from all over the commonwealth and even a few germans. i really recomend it. come to Belgium and visit that place. it's called tyne cot cemetery. it is really breathtaking
i was in the royal engineers, and i was in an army band I marched in my best blue and reds, with swinging snare, marched into the menin gate in ypres, and on belgian tv,laid a wreath then with my sticks,i came to attention, saluted, then drilled my way out, right hand with stick swinging!
Some Savatage' songs reaction would be great. Hall of the Mountain King, Edge of Thorns, When The Crowds are Gone, Gutter Ballet, Morphine Child, and Believe to name only a few. Stratovarius - Infinity Sabaton -The Final Solution Helloween -How Many Tears Blind Guardian -Precious Jerusalem
When the Crowds are gone is such an amazing emotional song, that solo is incredible. Gutter is such a fun song.. I wish more people would discover this band
Absolutely!!! Chance, Sirens, The Dungeons Are Calling, Power Of The Night, 24 hours Ago, Of Rage And War, Jesus Saves, Alone You Breathe, and Strange Wings . I have been a huge Savatage fan for over thirty years. I can't believe that it took a change of their name to become famous. Most probably have no clue that Trans Siberian Orchestra were once called Savatge. Both bands are different in many ways, but very much the same also.
Ieperen which was also on the battleground, for the ones who fell in this battle "the last post" is played at exactly 8 pm every day, in that town. And everyone joins, the enormous cemetary is kept pristine up to this day, children in schools learn what happened there, so they will never make that mistake, and care for the graves, for there lies one who made their freedom possible
As a Canadian, I've had to learn about this battle quite a few times across grades. If what we're taught is correct, Iron Maiden makes it sound like a picnic by comparison.
Aye. They've barely touched on OSDM and I'm not into a lot of the death metal they've done thus far. Also I second them doing Bolt Thrower. I imagine Vin would probably like their mean riffs.
1917 The battle of Passchendale was the one with he biggest losses for both parties.. close to 800.000 ( some calulations even add 200.00 more losses to the German side, maiking it 1.000.000 people died in one single battle, filling the Earth litterally with blood, the village of Passendaele was almost completely flat after the battle..
The worst part about the barbed wire fences is before any offensive there would be a huge artillery barrage to try to disperse the barbed wire but all it did was fling it up in the air and drop it back down. The soldiers couldn't see the barbed wire due to all the smoke the officers told them it was gone so they marched through incoming machine gun fire only to find the barbed wire still intact. Can't go forward, can't go back. Just stuck in no mans land with nothing to do but pray.
My grandfather was at the battles around this area when the Germans used gas.He survived but died short time after coming back through illness related to being gased. He died because of war but was not counted as war dead. So really more died than the offical figure. Love Iron Maiden Great reaction and discussion.
Paschendale Was brutal, the year before The Battle of the Somme occurred too, which was just appalling. World War I was utter hell. One thing I've loved about Maiden and other bands is that, even in ways that will never TRULY convey the utter atrocities that occurred, their songs keep the memory alive for us to hear and learn about.
That 600+k dead young men to win ground for less than six miles. That was lost again during next year. And especially British were often volunteers and units were composed of men from same towns and villages. So when their comrades fell, they were often someone they had known from childhood. And because whole units were forced to run against machine gun fire at once, sometimes all young men of certain geographical area died in a single day. It's hard to comprehend the scars this left even to those who survived.
Just getting back into Iron Maiden again at 46. Haven't heard any of their music after No Prayer For the Dying. I'm sure that after hearing Paschendale a few more times I'll like it better.
One of my great-grandfathers - Charlie Blackwell - was just 15 when he illegally joined up to fight in the British Army in WW1. Another was a Red Cross horse-drawn ambulance driver on the front line. He was gassed and came home with PTSD.
WW1 in my opinion, was the most brutal war, the living conditions in the trenches constant artillery, running into machine gun fire, barbwire, poison gas.
One of my favourite iron maiden tracks
Nice! This is such an amazing song!
Masterpiece
Suggestion for an upcoming react: Caught Somewhere in Time
Paschendale was the costliest battle of WW1, and the traffic (and city) still comes to a halt every day for the commemoration and remembrance service held there every single day.
Carlos Pro +1 for some Magna Carta Cartel! I like the newer stuff more than the old, but it’s all pretty good.
I love MCC. I dont really compare MCC and Ghost since they play in completly different ways and genres. My favourites are Valiant Visions Dawn and Sunsettlers.
Register on Website and vote for The Greater Good of God! Is the only way, haha
on the concert they putt, hang wires on stage, in one moment Dickinson act like he is stuck in, he is in uniform from ww1, and thay play this very well, crazy how good they are live, this song special and couple more
The clicking you hear at the beginning is Morse code for SOS......
My humble suggestion would be Starblind, from Iron Maiden's The Final Frontier

A very underrated song, I concur!
@@mtaffer It is very underrated, which is quite baffling to me
I know Paschedale is a village in the Ypres salient there was a report that a Canadian Soldier was Crucified on a barn door or tree with 5 bayonets. Not sure if that was verified but it was used to sell war bonds and I believe a memorial was made for this soldier. Rest in Peace to all soldiers from both sides of that conflict sad to know they are still finding some of the missing from that war.
Finally! Best track from Dance of Death! HELLOWEEN ☆ KEEPER OF THE SEVEN KEYS 🎃
Paschendale is a town in Belgium where during WW1 all hell broke lose.....a lot of Englisch soldiers died , it has one of the biggest Englisch war graves . Belgium has a verry big war history That goes way back even to the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar.
Waterloo.....france Emperor Napoleon was Defeted there.....WW1 Ieper, Paschendale....WW2.....Batle of the bulge where the last big german attack was and the defeat of the German army.......yes guys...this al has taken place in the little country called Belgium
so what?
Canadians were the only ones to capture Passchendaele and when told to give it to the British it fell to the Germans. What a waste for Canadian soldiers in the war.
that solo is amazing
I had a family member in the Great War. He died at Vimy Ridge in his 21st year. He was a sapper. Died digging under German trenches and laying explosives. Husband's family member was in the engineers division behind the lines. He survived.
Great song.
paschendale is a small village in Belgium, and it has the biggest british cemetery with soldiers from all over the commonwealth and even a few germans. i really recomend it. come to Belgium and visit that place. it's called tyne cot cemetery. it is really breathtaking
i was in the royal engineers, and i was in an army band I marched in my best blue and reds, with swinging snare, marched into the menin gate in ypres, and on belgian tv,laid a wreath then with my sticks,i came to attention, saluted, then drilled my way out, right hand with stick swinging!
Some Savatage' songs reaction would be great. Hall of the Mountain King, Edge of Thorns, When The Crowds are Gone, Gutter Ballet, Morphine Child, and Believe to name only a few.
Stratovarius - Infinity
Sabaton -The Final Solution
Helloween -How Many Tears
Blind Guardian -Precious Jerusalem
The people voting > Vin avoidance
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!
Black Sabbath - Snowblind!!
And the system of a down cover
Ieperen which was also on the battleground, for the ones who fell in this battle "the last post" is played at exactly 8 pm every day, in that town. And everyone joins, the enormous cemetary is kept pristine up to this day, children in schools learn what happened there, so they will never make that mistake, and care for the graves, for there lies one who made their freedom possible
As a Canadian, I've had to learn about this battle quite a few times across grades. If what we're taught is correct, Iron Maiden makes it sound like a picnic by comparison.
Iron Maiden - Killers or Murders In The Rue Morgue
Revelations!!!!
or maybe strange world nobody had reacted to it
Prowler?
@@random4115 yes! Di'Anno albums are seriously underrated
@@thegreasybagboy I prefer bruce dickinson albums, but Di anno albums are great
Death - Voice of The Soul
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
All in favour of an OSDM week, stuff like Autopsy, Obituary, Morbid Angel and the likes, say aye
AYE MAN, fucking AYE. Lyrics will be a bit complicated for them, they like more "meaningful" songs but that would be extremely bad ass of them.
Aye. They've barely touched on OSDM and I'm not into a lot of the death metal they've done thus far. Also I second them doing Bolt Thrower. I imagine Vin would probably like their mean riffs.
Aye!
Ayee
Aye!!!
My great grandfather got shot in the head at Paschendaele, recovered and went back to the front.
Sabaton - the price of a mile
1917 The battle of Passchendale was the one with he biggest losses for both parties.. close to 800.000 ( some calulations even add 200.00 more losses to the German side, maiking it 1.000.000 people died in one single battle, filling the Earth litterally with blood, the village of Passendaele was almost completely flat after the battle..
iron maiden for the greater good of god

The worst part about the barbed wire fences is before any offensive there would be a huge artillery barrage to try to disperse the barbed wire but all it did was fling it up in the air and drop it back down. The soldiers couldn't see the barbed wire due to all the smoke the officers told them it was gone so they marched through incoming machine gun fire only to find the barbed wire still intact. Can't go forward, can't go back. Just stuck in no mans land with nothing to do but pray.
Iron Maiden Montsegur please
Yes I've been asking for this too. Probably their heaviest song ever, and a wonderfully composed telling of an event in religious history.
Gotta watch these songs live version, really brings the story to life.
My grandfather was at the battles around this area when the Germans used gas.He survived but died short time after coming back through illness related to being gased. He died because of war but was not counted as war dead. So really more died than the offical figure. Love Iron Maiden Great reaction and discussion.
i saw this song performed live, amazing. especially at an indoor venue
Great discussion!!
Caught some where in time reactions is a song increíble
Paschendale Was brutal, the year before The Battle of the Somme occurred too, which was just appalling. World War I was utter hell. One thing I've loved about Maiden and other bands is that, even in ways that will never TRULY convey the utter atrocities that occurred, their songs keep the memory alive for us to hear and learn about.
Yes, it is truly overlooked because of ww2. Passchendaele was definitely more hellish than even Stalingrad
YES, FINALLY PACHENDALE!!! I haven't even watched the video yet and I'm already hyped hahaha
The term "Epic" is overused, but damn....that's epic.
Another great one from a great band
You need to react to a song off the first two Iron Maiden albums...either Phantom of the Opera or Remember Tomorrow...or Wrathchild.
Man the live version is epic
WW1 in my opinion, was the most brutal war, the living conditions in the trenches constant artillery, running into machine gun fire, barbwire, poison gas.
When the wild wind blows - Iron Maiden. Pleeaaaaaaaassssseeee
