Marie Richardson killed it in this scene. One of the best female performances I've ever seen. Just listen to the beginning to 4:33, she kind of "quacks" and it sounds extremely natural. Kubrick's genius is shines here
If you play the movie on two screens at the same time, synching it at the moment when Bill kisses Alice's neck in the bathroom against Sandor kissing Alice's hand, it looks like Alice stretched on the bed smoking the joint is meant to look like Mandy slumped in the chair on heroin and coke. And Marion confessing her love for Bill is meant to look like Alice confessing her "love" for the naval officer (same wispy hair). People always said all the women in the movie looked the same, but I never agreed until I saw them side by side on two screens.
Truly a masterpiece still after all these years I don’t think anyone’s theories or interpretations of this film scratch the surface of what it’s about or what the story means. A true mystery enigma in cinema
I think that, the same way Alice had fantasies with the Navy officer, this woman had them with Bill and her husband never noticed them. Bill was in front of the mirror and he knew it. This movie is fantastic because the more you watch it, the more you enjoy it.
Brilliantly written and acted. This scene shows us primal human desire that cannot be controlled by social norms or prior bonds established for survival purposes. Dr. Bill refuses to see this humanity displayed before him. He instinctively tells her to close her eyes to her true desire and be a good person and play the game that she has been assigned. It implies that we too must play our assigned roles within the rigid boundaries set up by society to insure the functioning of society as a whole. It is also key in widening the conscious fissure that is developing in his own frame of reference. What if Alice, his wife, chooses not to play the more calculating game of survival under his authority but allows her primal instincts to take over.
I disagree: she doesn't love him, she is only infatuated for him (in facts she barely knows him). So the scene depicts another form of perversion (like the other types of perversion depicted in the film) that is very spread across society nowadays: the spasmodic tension towards infatuation emotions versius the reasearch of the real value of love. Love begins with infatuation but then matures in a variety of feelings like respect, affection, sex desire, complicity... Infatuation is a like a flame that burns bright but then turns off very early when it collides with the real life constraints. Continuely researching strong infatuation feelings is like reasearching strong sexual emotions, that means that you will rip apart stable love relations for searching a vain dream like she barely do in this scene (excepting stopping herself at the very end only because of her fiance is coming into the house). Love is constructive and long lasting. Believing love is only infatuation is (like I've said) a perversion.
Kubrick did take after take after take, just to get that one take that was so good that it couldn't be repeated. He sow that the selling point in a film is the magic of acting, or reacting!!. Not special affects or shoot ups , it's the performances and storytelling!.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was originally cast as Marion and filmed her scenes but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced with Marie Richardson.
I think Marie truly loved Bill, and the tragedy of Bill begins immediately after this scene. This scene immediately follows the weed induced conversation between Alice and Bill. One thing to note: colors serve as visual guides to the character's intentions throughout the film. Usually Kubrik's queues the audience to show familial love, or genuine caring when we see blue. Some examples: the woman who sacrifices herself for Bill at the party, stands near blue windows, Alice wears blue when she waits for bill while teaching their daughter, and this one. We also see with red every time the cult, lust, or uncontrolled passion is referenced in some way. Examples: the figure at the party or when he's talking with Ziegler. When Alice tells Bill about how she wanted the affair the camera shifts from Red trim blue windows to focus on mostly the red drapes. When she sits down the screen is mostly red when she talks about giving up her family and their child. To me, unlike Alice, Marrie genuinely cares for Bill. I feel bad for Bill because he didn't realize who really cared for him in this film. Marie is desperately reaching out for help as well in a way that seems to indicate the cult has been watching her too. When Carl is introduced he walks in and the screen is mostly green and he crosses the The Christmas tree again. I believe this is a theme that refers to money and the Christmas tree referencing times when the cult is watching. What sticks with me is that before Bill goes away, Carl is standing next to a mask on the shelf, and as Bill walks away we see Marie look devastated. This was a great scene in my opinion by Kubric and very well acted.
The blue window appears also in one of the final scenes; in contrast to the red carpet of the pool table in the foreground; when his rich friend Victor Ziegler convinces Dr. Hartford to quit his investigation. Protective? May be in a way; but menacing too. Also one of the few no dream like sequences of the film

This had to be deliberate on Kubrick's part.
The wallpaper pattern is the same I think as the curtains in the Hartford's kitchen. The more I watch this scene (and bearing in mind this comment about the furniture), the more I think it might be a dream sequence.
It's so funny. Her father is lying dead right there. She just mentioned she's about to get married to a very successfull scholar and start a bright future together. Bill mentioned to her that we don't even know each other. Yet all she wants is for Bill to take her right there!

MK Ultra was a CIA experiment with psychedelics like LSD on unsuspecting US citizens in an effort to see if they can extract sensitive information from individuals without the means of physical torture. Kind of like a truth serum. They failed but I'm sure they found something of the like along the way.
I'm watching this on Netflix at the time of this comment on My 65" TV Her left Eye is quite creepy and seems to turn Black when away from light as though the entire pupil completely dilates.
Imagine what type of thoughts are going through her mind at 5:55. She looks like she’s on the verge of expressing her innermost feelings, spilling all the beans, and ending her relationship, but just barely restrains herself. Bill could probably read between the lines enough to know he had to get outa that flat with the quickness and never look back
Ok...what exactly happened with that lady's behavior? I remembered watching this scene before, only to be confused. I tried to watch for exactly what cues prompted her to behave the way she did with Tom Cruise's character. Judging by what I've seen here, and the comments below, I can only come up with two conclusions; Either... A: She was some victim of MK Ultra (which might make sense), or B: She was just that physically attracted to him, that it literally just shrouded both her base and hindbrain. I don't KNOW.........
When Carl appears, the frame displays both a mask and the dead father, as well as a terrified Marie. When Bill leaves, there is a Christmas tree directly behind her while she has a ghostly appearance. With the themes of the film, and the subtleties, it could be possible that she may have been a victim of a similar abuse.
This woman reminds Dill of his wife Alice. Alice also wanted to throw away everything she has with Bill for the marine officer. This woman wants to throw everything she has with Carl the math teacher for Bill.
I feel so bad for Marion here, she is so unhappy and vulnerable. I don't understand, was she supposed to be unattractive? I think she is very pretty Marie Richardson is an amazing actress ans portrays her so well.
@@CG-rb4xo Jennifer Jason Leigh was originally cast as Marion and filmed her scenes but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced with Marie Richardson.
@Dingle Barry By the way, Marie Richardson looks exactly like Nicole Kidman (her wife in the movie). that is not a coincidence of life at all, but this is a fact well known for critics who analyze movies
it is not so out of turn to express her feelings towards him the specific time. it seems awkward I agree but most probably, this is the last time she sees him. I mean Tom Cruise is the doctor treating her father but her father is dead now...Also in my opinion, when she mentions her fiance (two or three times...) and the plans they have for the future I think she is doing it on purpose expecting some kind of reaction from Tom Cruise. She has strong feelings for him and she thinks this is mutual. She really expects that he will say something or at least try to dissuade her from leaving. When she realizes from the way he answers back that it is not mutual only then she gets her courage up and makes a pass at him.
She loves Bill, even though they only met a few times. She can just tell. She used the grief over her father to mask the fact that she was terrified to tell him - terrified that he'd say no. She knew it was impossible for an actual relationship. But with him right there, she had to try anyway. The end of this clip is probably the saddest moment of her life - knowing that she can never have the love of her life. Knowing that she will always be disappointed with Carl, in comparison. It's like death.
The female character was upset because two things was happening. His dad just die and she feel the sorrow because of that and because there´s no other reason why she and the docter meet again. Thats why she´s so desperate.
This film is chockful of truly embarrassing performances. I don't think I've seen anything so bad outside of a porn movie. I've watched the film several times in an attempt to find an appreciation. I've read the original novella hoping it would offer some insight. I don't understand why this one particular story obsessed Kubrick for so long. He was in communication with Albert Brooks and expressed his admiration for his film Modern Romance and wanted to do something on similar lines, something on modern relationships. It just seems like both Kubrick and his collaborator (each in their 70's) were completely out of touch with how people behave. Nothing seems real or natural in the way people react. It really does feel like a porno movie. Every scene feels like one of those clunky set ups for a prolonged sex scene, whether it's a pizza delivery guy or a repairman ready for action at a moments notice, but nothing happens and we're left with these awkward isolated scenes. The film is filled with them, from Bill being led away by the two women at the party or the cringeworthy moment of this video. Bad Timing by Nicolas Roeg was much better at showing the destructive effects of sexual obsession and was much more interesting than this cinematic sleeping pill. Even watching the uncut European version did nothing to improve my opinion. If the story is true that he told Lee Ermey in a telephone conversation that he thought the film was "a piece of shit" and "the critics were going to have him for lunch" ( although the Kubrick family refute this) then we must assume that he realized he was out of his depth on this subject. He admitted so much with A.I. and bequeathed the project to Spielberg, feeling the story and emotions of the characters were more suited to Spielberg's sensibility than his own. As much as I admire Kubrick as a filmmaker I still struggle with the lack of humanity in his films. From Lolita to the aforementioned film of this comment there is a thread of pessimism that might lead one to wonder if Kubrick saw any good in humanity. I'm at a loss to think of a genuinely good person in any film of this period, perhaps Danny Torrance. He certainly didn't give his female characters much to do, and Alice Hartford is no exception. Maybe if Kubrick kept the story in the time period of the novella it might have removed some of the artificial qualities. His films are usually set in an exaggerated environment but Eyes Wide Shut wants to have its cake and eat it too and scenes like the one in the costume store with the owner's daughter and the Japanese businessmen clash so clumsily with the one before and after. This is his worst film.
The funny thing is your main complaint is actually what Kubrick was going for. And once you understand that, you can appreciate the genius of it. The story of this film is adapted from a book known as “Dream story” You said “it doesn’t feel real” well it’s not supposed to! It’s supposed to be kind of bizarre and surreal. Which parts of the movie are real or just dreams? That’s the whole idea.
A moment of temptation for Bill. The whole film is Bill's Last Temptation that just keeps escalating until it reaches a fever pitch with the party and spirals out of control.
She played this scene very good, but somehow she's not really attractive to me. Her face is some kind of boring to me. Can't help myself , but that's what I think. I've seen her already often in other movies and , yes, I think of her this way.
Jennifer Jason Leigh was originally cast as Marion and filmed her scenes but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced by Marie Richardson.
@Feli Santi Ah, I see. I probably whould have preferred Jennifer J.L. in this role. I like her. Well, Marie Richardson is the same type of woman on the outside, so I guess that's why she got the part. And of course she played it well too.

A lot of people might think that this is a scene about the conflict between real feels and rules of society but I disagree: she doesn't love him, she is only infatuated for him (in facts she barely knows him). So the scene depicts another form of perversion (like the other types of perversion depicted in the film) that is very spread across society nowadays: the spasmodic tension towards infatuation emotions versus the search for the real value of love. Love begins with infatuation but then matures in a variety of feelings like respect, affection, sex desire, complicity... Infatuation is a like a flame that burns bright but then turns of very early when it collides with the real life constraints. Continually searching for strong infatuation feelings is like continually searching strong sexual emotions, that means, ripping apart stable love relations for searching a vain dream like she barely do in this scene (excepting stopping herself at the very end only because her fiance is coming into the house).
I've met women like her. Sometimes it's borderline personality, they "feel" things in a very strong way, they overshare, and blurt out stuff. They get overly attached. But they're sweet and extremely loyal people.
Truth iam borderline but also sounds soo like a Scorpio 😉😏😝🙃
Schizo, Scorpio, in the neighborhood, nah just kidding

Jennifer Jason Leigh was originally cast as Marion and filmed her scenes but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced with Marie Richardson.
very strange scene- why is doc bill call later at her house(husband answer but bill stay silent) ?
Very good of you to remember this scene he tried calling marion to have an affair with her but she didnt picked up the call
BEcause he had second thoughts and was going to take her up on her offer of sex.
Well... I guess it would be hard no to do that having Tom Cruise in front of you
Rumour has it that this role was supposed to be for Jennifer Jason Leigh, but there was a scheduling conflict. I think Marie Richardson crushed it.
This movie is wonderfully weird.
3:43 He is like... wtf is happening??
2001 white room furniture= Kubrick cinematic universe confirmed
Even with the ticking clock
Notice... The fiance had to ring the door bell to enter. She has the money and control.... Bill calls, the day after to " follow up " , but hangs up the phone, when the fiancee answered.
All these comments and nobody gets what this scene is about
Well what's your opinion

MK Ultra was a CIA experiment with psychedelics like LSD on unsuspecting US citizens in an effort to see if they can extract sensitive information from individuals without the means of physical torture. Kind of like a truth serum. They failed but I'm sure they found something of the like along the way.
5:17 Bill: FK! I hope I don't have some signs of her lipstick on my mouth...
LMFAO YO ! DUPERR UNDERRATED COMMENT OF LIFE 😭😭😭
I'm watching this on Netflix at the time of this comment on My 65" TV Her left Eye is quite creepy and seems to turn Black when away from light as though the entire pupil completely dilates.
I was wondering: was this the same couple that greeted Tom Cruise during the ritual at Somerton Manor?
Imagine what type of thoughts are going through her mind at 5:55. She looks like she’s on the verge of expressing her innermost feelings, spilling all the beans, and ending her relationship, but just barely restrains herself. Bill could probably read between the lines enough to know he had to get outa that flat with the quickness and never look back
Men can learn alot from this lol
I understand her.. I’d be like that too if Tom cruise was with me
She was limerent for him, he was her limerent object.
Entirely encrypting, Kubrick shows his art .....
Please elaborate. I'd love to hear your thoughts:)
Marion first mother did the same thing Marion tried to do
look bottom line she loves him. she does
Lust
Ok...what exactly happened with that lady's behavior? I remembered watching this scene before, only to be confused. I tried to watch for exactly what cues prompted her to behave the way she did with Tom Cruise's character. Judging by what I've seen here, and the comments below, I can only come up with two conclusions; Either...
A: She was some victim of MK Ultra (which might make sense), or
B: She was just that physically attracted to him, that it literally just shrouded both her base and hindbrain. I don't KNOW.........
Ndusk you’ve clearly never met an emotional woman with the hots for you

when autists watch movies
When Carl appears, the frame displays both a mask and the dead father, as well as a terrified Marie. When Bill leaves, there is a Christmas tree directly behind her while she has a ghostly appearance. With the themes of the film, and the subtleties, it could be possible that she may have been a victim of a similar abuse.
This woman reminds Dill of his wife Alice.
Alice also wanted to throw away everything she has with Bill for the marine officer. This woman wants to throw everything she has with Carl the math teacher for Bill.
I so wanted to be Tom in this movie he could of cheated on his wife multiple times lol.
This is demonic posession
I feel so bad for Marion here, she is so unhappy and vulnerable. I don't understand, was she supposed to be unattractive? I think she is very pretty Marie Richardson is an amazing actress ans portrays her so well.
He’s married

@@CG-rb4xo Jennifer Jason Leigh was originally cast as Marion and filmed her scenes but dropped out due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced with Marie Richardson.
Carl is only marrying Marion for the money.
@Dingle Barry
Thats a good analysis, and probably you are correct because with Kubrick pretty much every scene has very subtle secrets
@Dingle Barry
By the way, Marie Richardson looks exactly like Nicole Kidman (her wife in the movie). that is not a coincidence of life
at all, but this is a fact well known for critics who analyze movies
Marion is only marrying Carl because she can't have Dr. Bill.
@Dingle Barry Good analysis. Marion had an incestuous relationship with her father. His death finally frees her.
@@deb310red Same as Nichole Kidman who was a real life MK Ultra victim.

wait...did she actually kill him?
it is not so out of turn to express her feelings towards him the specific time. it seems awkward I agree but most probably, this is the last time she sees him.
I dont understand her character? Can some please explain.
I think it was another one of those tests Ziegler was talking about, but I'm not sure what they might've been testing for.
The female character was upset because two things was happening. His dad just die and she feel the sorrow because of that and because there´s no other reason why she and the docter meet again. Thats why she´s so desperate.
She is upset because he is very soothing .
hello?
she killed
him.

Just leave Carl!
Ross and Russ....
The story of this film is adapted from a book known as “Dream story”
You said “it doesn’t feel real” well it’s not supposed to! It’s supposed to be kind of bizarre and surreal. Which parts of the movie are real or just dreams? That’s the whole idea.
She was going to marry this man but now she kisses another in front of him? Good choice.

hell it's tom cruise. i'd probably do the same thing if i met him.
What was the point of this scene exactly?
A moment of temptation for Bill. The whole film is Bill's Last Temptation that just keeps escalating until it reaches a fever pitch with the party and spirals out of control.

She played this scene very good, but somehow she's not really attractive to me. Her face is some kind of boring to me. Can't help myself , but that's what I think. I've seen her already often in other movies and , yes, I think of her this way.

@Feli Santi Ah, I see. I probably whould have preferred Jennifer J.L. in this role. I like her. Well, Marie Richardson is the same type of woman on the outside, so I guess that's why she got the part. And of course she played it well too.
