I remember how we read Hoffmann's Sandman at school and I fell in love with it. His heroes were always such delusional romantics, his writing style always so sentimental and fluffy. Such great literature. I am not familiar with any of the film adaptions though.
I saw this film in the DuPont movie theatre in Washington DC, NW. When I was 5. I understood everything. I was used to French as well as 4 other foreign languages. Les Contes d'Hoffmann. I knew evil (my mother was Dappertutto) & mechanical engineering by nature. What scared me was Doctor Mirakle.
I think this was the 1st Archers movie I watched. I was a teenager and it was decades before I saw The Red Shoes; and I, briefly, had The Red Shoes mixed up with Tales of Hoffman. I can't help but think if I had noticed Black Narcissus first I would not have thought all Archer movies were odd, ballet musicals. Anyways, I still have not seen Tales of Hoffman from beginning to end like BN and A Matter of Life and Death and Colonel Blimp (which I'm watching, now, on Prime Vid for the first time in 10 years). Powell and Pressburger were brilliant. Wish I'd noticed sooner.
This film was almost like a live action Fantasia
That’s how I would characterize it as well.
Moira Shearer's skill is astounding. She combines strength, agility, grace, speed and remarkable musicality.
I dig the guy with the purple hair, Spalanzani. Especially the movements he does at “He revives, what relief!”

Never seen this before, quite wonderful.
Opera is this good or better all over the world. And, it’s live!
