www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode Powell and Pressburger’s 1951 gem The Tales Of Hoffman has been described as the best filmed opera ever. It’s like no other film you will ever see...
Gah, I love this film! I saw it at LFF and had to go back and see it again at the BFI at the start of the month. It's gorgeous and truly spectacular on the big screen.
I couldn't make it through a home viewing because it's got a lot of the preciousness I don't like in opera in general. But 'The Red Shoes'.... holy wow. Everyone should just watch more Archers.
Not a fan. Found myself having to force my way through it. It does have beautiful visuals but the story itself moves way too slow. I found out I love musicals but not opera

I have never ever heard of this before...
I've only seen Powell's Peeping Tom which I really liked. I should probably check out some of his works with Pressburger soon...
I desperately want to see this, partly because of Martin Scorsese has nothing but praise for this film.

Did I spot Ronnie Corbett? No seriously, did I?
Inspired Ken Russel?
Well then, I'm unsold!
