Long time AU fan here. AU has always been able to put defensive guys in the NFL and we've always been one of the running back powers of the SEC. But we've never been elite at WR no matter who was coaching. I believe AU has only put one WR into the 1st round since 1984 (yes, you heard that right). It's simply impossible to win in today's pass happy game without elite WR's, just like it wasn't possible to win in the 80's without elite RB's. Hugh has brought in FOUR top notch WR's in his first class. If that isn't progress, then I don't know what is.
Hugh is a juggernaut like Kiffin, only a much better coach than Kiffin. I predict Hugh to the mountain top. Auburn will get him a much better D line than ole miss had to offer. Once Hugh has a gunslinger QB and some big wide receivers, he’s going to smoke teams

That 2014-2016 run we had we should’ve gone 10/11 wins a season and should’ve gone to Atlanta at least once. If Lane had that stacked roster Hugh had he would’ve done that and that’s why Ole Miss fans are so pumped for this season because we finally have that level of talent. But during that time we lost a lot of games with mediocre play calling that we should’ve won. I mean a lot of head scratchers. And considering Hugh literally hired a ton of his former staffers that were with him during the Ole Miss days have fun. As a 23 year life long auburn fan (not that long for sure) however I have never seen auburn trend up faster nor from a further deficit then we were in from the potato famine in my entire life I am proud to say HUGH FREEZE is my coach. This is the most unity, consistency in recruiting, and direction Auburn has had in my 23 years of living. WDE baby the future is bright!!

And if beating Saban determined who Auburn should hire, then why did they fire the guy who beat him the most, Gus Malzahn? He beat Saban three times, and if they had never fired him, it would have been five because Malzahn wouldn't have lost to Saban at Jordan-Hare while leading with a win probability of 99.9% with a minute to go in the 4th quarter, like in 2021 and 2023.

Getting a top tier QB first off elevates that position room to be more competitive and not be as lazy and complacent as ours has been. BUT having that guy there, it makes the other position captains or leaders also elevate their level of play and competition. The sample size is too small at this point IMO, but I get where people are coming from on the hot seat talk. AU was a miserable watch last year, and it was vintage Freeze, way way up for the big ones and just looked like it didn't care the rest of the time. In today's SEC you can't do that, too many teams are too good. Hell, you couldn't do that in 2014 and 2015. The over under win total is 7.5, even if it hits over, 8 wins, you've got a coach entering year 3 of a 6 year contract a hair over .500 (overall) and a losing record in the league. So do you rally the NIL money around Freeze going into 2025, and try and make that your year (Bama/UGA in AU & manageable road slate - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt)? Do you extend his contract going into 2025? 2023 6-7 (3-5) 2024 8-4 (4-4) 2025
It's all about how well the quarterback will play. If Thorne picks up his game by 25% this year over last. Auburn could be very good. If not? Forget it. See it's pro football with 18 year old kids. Spend at least 1 million on a quarterback. Why not NFL wages? $25 million for a QB? That's where it's going. Look at Colorado. That model of a college football team is grotesque. College football is not watchable now because of the professional status. Allow highschool players to be drafted by the NFL instead of going to college.

previous history of losing to Vanderbilt twice. 2023 blown out by New Mexico State 31-10 IN Auburn. there have been a number of coaches over the years who could beat teams they shouldn't, failed to beat teams they should, and lost their jobs because of it. is Freeze another one of those? maybe, maybe not. time will tell.
2023 was just about surviving. 2024 is about development. 2025 and on is when I’d expect AU to challenge for the SEC and playoff. People don’t realize 2020-22 were the darkest years (roster and projection wise) at AU since the 70’s

As an Auburn fan Freeze isn't on the hot seat. That being said if we get another 6 win season then he will most definitely be on the hot seat come 2025. Especially if the 2025 recruiting class falls apart. Then if he doesn't win at least 8 games in 2025 after 2 completely non productive seasons then he would be fired.... that's just Auburn football love it or hate it... I think we finish with 8 wins after the bowl game which will be enough to satisfy boosters and maintain a solid recruiting class

I disagree about the QB strategy. You play in the SEC and it takes $$$ to be competitive. If you aren't willing to spend the money now when you need to rebuild and when the program is unattractive to many recruits; when will you be willing to spend the money? Auburn is simply not elite and is a bottom half program in the SEC.

Pate…normally I’m a fan of yours but man you are showing your ignorance when you say shit like “Auburn was always more than a QB away blah blah blah.” Yes it’s true that we need more than a QB this year but you should also know that by brining in a better QB talent and spending that money to get him there, it impacts so much more. Getting a top tier QB first off elevates that position room to be more competitive and not be as lazy and complacent as ours has been. BUT having that guy there, it makes the other position captains or leaders also elevate their level of play and competition. It also allows the other position groups to play within their capabilities instead of feeling the need to overcompensate and play above their heads. Which is what we’re seeing all over the field at Auburn right now. Which is why we’re seeing all the dumbass mistakes we’re seeing. So yes. The NIL money should have been spent on bringing in another QB.
And for the record, we aren’t hurting on NIL money at all and had plenty of room in the budget to do what we did and still bring in a QB talent. What we actually had happen was Freeze was protecting his asset while covering his own ass, when it comes to Thorne. If Thorne fails, it shows that Freeze isn’t the guru everyone has made him out to be. Which is actually closer to the truth than people want to say out loud. Freeze is NOT anywhere near the coach that people sell him to be. His record actually speaks to that if you are honest about it. Just beating Saban twice isn’t a big whooptydo. Gus did it. They thought they were poised to dominate Alabama in recruiting, and are finding out that nothing has changed in Tuscaloosa, a point which you alluded to yourself recently. When Auburn is up to its old tricks, losing most of their October/November games as usual (Is New Mexico State coming for another visit?) they'll start talking about firing Freeze and enticing Jim Harbaugh back from the NFL. They can't help themselves, because they think they are the most important program in America.
The sample size is too small at this point IMO, but I get where people are coming from on the hot seat talk. AU was a miserable watch last year, and it was vintage Freeze, way way up for the big ones and just looked like it didn't care the rest of the time. In today's SEC you can't do that, too many teams are too good. Hell, you couldn't do that in 2014 and 2015.
The over under win total is 7.5, even if it hits over, 8 wins, you've got a coach entering year 3 of a 6 year contract a hair over .500 (overall) and a losing record in the league. So do you rally the NIL money around Freeze going into 2025, and try and make that your year (Bama/UGA in AU & manageable road slate - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt)? Do you extend his contract going into 2025?

previous history of losing to Vanderbilt twice. 2023 blown out by New Mexico State 31-10 IN Auburn. there have been a number of coaches over the years who could beat teams they shouldn't, failed to beat teams they should, and lost their jobs because of it. is Freeze another one of those? maybe, maybe not. time will tell.
2023 was just about surviving. 2024 is about development. 2025 and on is when I’d expect AU to challenge for the SEC and playoff. People don’t realize 2020-22 were the darkest years (roster and projection wise) at AU since the 70’s

As an Auburn fan Freeze isn't on the hot seat. That being said if we get another 6 win season then he will most definitely be on the hot seat come 2025. Especially if the 2025 recruiting class falls apart. Then if he doesn't win at least 8 games in 2025 after 2 completely non productive seasons then he would be fired.... that's just Auburn football love it or hate it... I think we finish with 8 wins after the bowl game which will be enough to satisfy boosters and maintain a solid recruiting class

I’m 66 I have suffered through all of the horrible decisions that Auburn has made through the years related to football coaches. It’s been rough. I feel they sold the soul of the university to hire Freeze. I don’t care if I watch a game or not anymore. Burned me bad. They didn’t really believe in the Auburn Creed. I no lobby tickets or go to games or donate money. Done.

I disagree about the QB strategy. You play in the SEC and it takes $$$ to be competitive. If you aren't willing to spend the money now when you need to rebuild and when the program is unattractive to many recruits; when will you be willing to spend the money? Auburn is simply not elite and is a bottom half program in the SEC.
